Chapter 34--Escape and Regrets
It took longer than Erestor thought to free himself from his bonds, but finally he succeeded. He didn't try to move right away. He kept a wary eye on the sentry while he worked the stiffness from his limbs. Finally he felt like he could walk without difficulty. He peered towards the sentry and smiled. It looked like the Valar were on his side. The Human’s head drooped on his chest and he could hear snoring, the sentry had fallen asleep.
Erestor stood and walked to the horses as silently as a shadow. He would ride back to Imladris and tell Elrond about the raiders. Elrond could use Vilya to alter the path the raiders used, so it was lost to them. He came to the horses and they shifted about. The leader’s mount nickered softly and nuzzled him, most likely looking for a treat. "Sorry, my friend, I have nothing for you now, but if you and your friends will take me home I promise there will be treats for all of you," Erestor said. He had to take all the horses, so the Humans couldn’t pursue him.
The stallion snorted and bobbed his head. “Thank you, my friend,” Erestor whispered. He freed all the horses from their tethers then leaped onto the stallion’s back. The horse plunged forward into a gallop and the other horses raced after them.
The thundering hooves woke the men and they scrambled up, yelling and cursing. They were too late to stop the mass escape and soon they were lost to sight behind them.
Erestor laughed triumphantly. “Onward to Imladris, my friends,” he said.
Meanwhile……
Celebrian sat in she and Elrond’s private sitting room thoughts awhirl. Two hours ago Erestor’s horse had returned rider less. A search party had been assembled and sent out with Glorfindel as their leader to find Erestor.
Now Celebrian’s soul ached with guilt. She had allowed the Humans to take Erestor and she hadn’t said anything even when the search party had left. She was seeing herself in a new light and what she saw made her feel ashamed. She had been fond of Erestor when he was Elrond’s ward, but when the bond was placed on her husband and Erestor then the feelings had turned to jealousy and spite. She had heard that sometimes a guardian and the Lord he was bound to became lovers as well. She had gotten it set in her mind that Erestor would become Elrond‘s lover, that perhaps he already was. She had believed it even though she‘d had no proof. She had even believed Erestor was using Glorfindel to cover the affair. “I was wrong, Erestor, I am sorry. Valar please bring Erestor home alive and safe,” she whispered. “Do not make him suffer for my pettiness.” She covered her face with her hands and sobbed.
Glorfindel and the six others in the search party had no trouble tracking Erestor’s mount back. Once there they dismounted and looked around. It wasn’t long before they found the raiders tracks leading away.
“Raiders, they have taken Erestor. We must go after them,” Glorfindel growled. He turned to one of the elves. “Jaelyn, ride like the wind to Lord Elrond and tell him all we have discovered. Tell him that we are pursuing Lord Erestor’s kidnappers,” he ordered.
The Elf nodded. “Aye, Lord Glorfindel,” he said. Turning his mount, he galloped of towards Imladris.
“Let us ride, they already are well ahead of us,” Glorfindel said and the group headed out.

Erestor had allowed the horse to slow to a steady walk, fearing the horse would stumble in the dark and injure itself. He was confident they were safe. The Humans could not see well at night and even if they could they had no way to catch him without horses. With luck he would be home by tomorrow evening. A grim expression came to Erestor’s face. After he warned Elrond about the Humans he would have to confront Celebrian with his suspicions. He truly hoped he was wrong about her involvement, but he was sure he was right. Her betrayal was like having a knife driven into his heart. He had respected her, considered her more as a mother then anything, just as Elrond had been like a father to him. It hurt to think she would do such an evil thing to him.
