@Raevyn: To be honest, I haven't decided yet. I have my ideas, but I'm reluctant to see them through... as much as I love tormenting my characters I find myself wondering if I should opt to have anyone die or not, there's plenty of misery to be found without killing them.
But then again... buahaha guess you'll just have to wait and see what I have planned.
All in all, I can at least assure you there will be twists and the lately continued happiness is starting to shatter, with all sort of consequences for our lovely Elves.
Dun-dun-duuuuun!
Chapter 34: No choice
Haldir knew that Legolas tried his best to appear unfazed by the remarks they heard from the crowd, the Elf was on the brink of a relapse.
It was something he had feared in coming here; people's opinions weren't easily changed when one spend over 1500 years hearing how awful a person is.
It would not disappear overnight.
Haldir felt that seeing it all was like watching a disaster unfold.
Could there be a positive outcome to his all? Could Legolas win back the love of his people?
He truly hoped he would get the chance.
Inspired by this idea, Haldir approached the King.
Once more, he defied proper protocol, but it was of no matter. Legolas' well-being came first, "My liege, perhaps, in honour of the prince's return, you could consider hosting an archery tournament? It would allow for the people to see the prince's worth and skill…"
Legolas' archery skills would impress them all, for most of the people of Mirkwood still believed him to be good for nothing. They were wrong.
A few of the guards would know, those that had accompanied the King on his trip to Lothlorien that changed everything.
Thranduil considered the suggestion, then nodded, "It shall proof a good diversion from recent troubles in the realm. Indeed, so it shall be done."
Although the King considered everything 'settled', he too knew that his people were almost reluctant to accept Legolas as a worthy prince.
Perhaps seeing his skill would alter people's opinions.
As it was, no one bothered him, no one touched him or spat at him. For whatever it was worth, they left him alone.
Legolas couldn't help but wonder, however, how much of that was because their opinion had changed and how much of it was caused simply by Haldir being there and standing up for him.
Whatever their opinion of him was, Haldir went unquestioned, unchallenged.
Without Haldir there, things would have been very different.
Mirkwood wasn't his home. He could hardly wait to leave the realm and return to Lothlorien. He wasn't wanted here and quite frankly, he wasn't at all sure he wanted to be here.
All seemed so different now that he felt lost.
Everywhere he went he had some type of negative memory attached to it and as his father lead him into the dining halls he found himself overcome by the past.
His skin grew more pale than his ordinarily fair complexion, his body grew tense.
As if on cue, there was Haldir.
The Marchwarden put one hand on the small of Legolas' back, offering comfort while he whispered gently, "It is alright to say it is too much, my prince, you needn't do all of this in one day. We have time."
The words were followed by a gentle kiss, the truest admission of love for anyone to witness.
Though it was too much, Legolas didn't dare voice that thought. He didn't wish to actively remind others of the horrors he had suffered here, but Haldir was right. He felt overwhelmed.
Legolas looked at his father, "Ada, would you excuse Haldir and myself? It has been a long journey."
It was Rúmil who stepped forward, "Allow me to show them to their room?"
A nod followed.
Though Legolas followed Rúmil, halfway there he paused, "We are going the wrong way… My room is in the North."
Away from the sun, away from comfort.
Rúmil smiled, "Not anymore, your father has built you chambers in the West wing… you will find the sun nearly ever present throughout the day."
Casual, but as they walked on, two of the King's guards stood guard before the hall leading to the prince's room, "He thought you deserved a new place, one of positivity without past memories… He extended the hallway for it and cleared it for you alone, with two guards who shall let none pass without your permission, but Haldir, the King and myself."
The gesture made Legolas smile; his father had done that for him?
It had never been a secret that Legolas enjoyed light, needed it. So long had it been denied to him… He wouldn't have to face his old room, "The entire North Wing has been changed, too, it now houses the library, so even still it should not remind you of… those horrible things."
Rúmil embraced the prince then, "I hope you shall feel at home here, too."
And with that the youngest Galadhrim was gone.
Legolas and Haldir proceeded down the hallway, which was large and light, decorated with murals of the forest and filled with plants. As they opened the door into the chambers, Legolas could barely believe this was his.
The walls were laced with mithril, sparkling in the light like stars, the bed was huge and spoke of incredible luxury.
A set of knives lay upon the bed, wrapped with a red ribbon. The handles were white ivory with a gold tone to it in an Elven vine design, the blades themselves too seemed white with slight decoration.
They were stunning, fit for royalty.
Haldir smiled as he watched the prince explore the chambers.
The disbelief was endearing as much as it was saddening, but all too soon his beloved blossomed as he had in Lothlorien.
Legolas smiled, "I must thank him for this… I never thought… I didn't expect it."
Haldir had, but still it was good to see it had been done, "It is a good thing that a lot of the scenes that might have stirred your worst memories have completely vanished. Would you like to visit the library later, perhaps, after you thank the King?"
A nod, yes. Yes, that would be wonderful.
When they found the King, however, their positivity would soon change.
Lord Celeborn had asked for Thranduil to wait until after the ceremony to let them know of the necessity to separate them, but the King thought it cruel not to allow them to make the most of the time they had left before they parted ways.
When the two had gathered before him, he shared the news, "I fear I have troublesome news for the both of you. But a day after the ceremony, you, Haldir, must return to Lothlorien. Your presence there is much needed."
Brows furrowed. They had known that… what was the problem? "Legolas, must however, remain here. We struggle to protect our borders from the threats of Dol Goldur. We need your skills, my son, we need you to aid in the training of our guards."
Surprise, anger, despair…"But… but the bond…"
Thranduil turned away, "The Lord Celeborn managed to change your bond, by the grace of the Valar. Being apart shall no longer cause you to fade. I understand it will be difficult no less…"
It was Haldir who spoke next, "But it must be done. There is no choice."
They were right, of course. Legolas realized that. Still he dreaded the idea of being here without Haldir.
Still he lowered his head in respect to his father, "Though I agree with its necessity, I disagree with Lord Celeborn's method. We should have been included in the decision. He had no right to alter our bond."
Once more it was Haldir who tried to reason with the prince, "Now, at least being apart can't do us harm, my prince. I agree that we should have been informed, but as it is, perhaps we ought to be grateful for it?"
Legolas nodded, "I just… I don't want to be without you."
But they both knew there was no choice, "This will pass, you shall be in my arms again before you know it."
The King knew better. Lord Celeborn had said enough by not saying anything at all.
That one week would not be all of it.
The two excused themselves to pay a visit to the library. As expected, their initial excitement had been dimmed.
It was Legolas who led the way to the North wing, but as he drew near it he realized the path had changed entirely.
It winded differently, passed different sights. Still Haldir held his hand, as though that gesture would be enough to ward off any past memory that dared creep to the surface.
Drawing the prince near, Haldir pressed a gentle kiss to the prince's lips, "I love you, my prince."
Legolas smiled, returning the kiss, "I love you too Haldir."
The fact Haldir chose to be so open about his love for the prince was, in part, to the perception people had of him.
The Marchwarden wasn't blind to his own reputation. If he loved the prince, clearly he was worthy.
In addition, the more they knew the prince was his, the greater the chance they would not bother him with negativity.
But, Haldir feared what would happen to the prince once he left, what the people might say to him... without him to keep him safe.
As they reached the library, Legolas was stunned to see it. A great ceiling of glass ensured a great amount of natural light and a beautiful sight up at the ancient oak trees. The library itself was spacious and light. Stunning.
Here and there were small little niches one could curl up with a book, but as Legolas detected them a whole different idea came to mind and a blush tinged his cheeks.
Haldir's brow rose in question as he noted the blush, then followed the prince's gaze.
Moving up close to Legolas, he whispered softly, "You mustn't think of such things , lest I am to act upon it."
The blush only deepened, but Haldir relented, "Not here. Not now."
A nod.
Then Haldir smiled, "Soon, my love. Very soon indeed."
But all thought of such things escaped them as horns interrupted conversation.
The borders were under attack. They needed help.
It stayed this way for the next to weeks, whenever they found a moment for themselves, something came around to disturb it.
Legolas slowly gained the respect of those who truly paid attention. Still those remained who had a negative opinion of him. It wouldn't be altered so easily, not even by the display of his superior skill.
A handful of guards, random people. The numbers dwindled, but they never fully disappeared.
Now that the wedding was at hand, to Legolas it was clouded by sadness. Sadness knowing that the day after he would have to say his goodbyes to his one true love.
Sure, it was just a week... but even a day without seeing Haldir seemed too much.
