A/N: I'm currently wondering if I should start a new story for the following chapter, or just continue it here.
We're at a turning point in the story... dun dun duuuuuuun!
Raevyn: Yes, more than likely! Legolas tends to still be a bit naive.
Chapter 35: It's time
The day of the ceremony…
"Ada. Stop pacing, you'll ruin your boots."
It wasn't enough for everyone to be nervous for the King's 'big day', but no one seemed more concerned than the king.
Thranduil looked to his son, "What if something is not perfect?"
Legolas shrugged, "Then you will accept it and make it perfect, anyway."
There was something in his father's eyes that spoke of pride.
The King had since his return often spoken of this pride he felt. He was proud to call him son.
Legolas saw that respect reflected in almost all of his people at long last.
No one questioned him, or the past he had in this place anymore for all could see his noble bearing, his pride and all those that he spoke to –which were quite a lot of Elves, considering Legolas took the time to talk to everyone he came across– could only admire the natural light Legolas seemed to possess.
Just like Haldir had said.
Thranduil was amazed by his son. The past was the past, but still the King did not go a day without feeling guilty over it. The horrors he had allowed to go on under his watch.
He closed his eyes before he looked away.
Legolas was fast becoming a more than worthy heir to the throne.
Kind and gentle-hearted, but wise and righteous. Yes, his son would make a great King one day.
The people adored him, too.
The music started playing, "Ada, it's time."
Together they moved forward, both dressed in royal robes, made from an intricate brocade with a pale blue background. Throughout the robes seems to be a rich mix of greens, blues, yellows and golds.
Though dressed according to tradition, one could tell the King's favoured leather pants were underneath it all, while Legolas had opted for a pair of blue leggings.
While Legolas wore his circlet, his father wore his crown.
To think the start of the wedding did anything to ease his father's nerves was a mistake.
Standing there, waiting for Rúmil and Haldir seemed to make it that much worse.
The two brothers came out, and though he tried to fight it, Legolas couldn't keep his own smile hidden. Haldir looked amazing in his formal attire. Fur and leathers, gorgeous.
Legolas all but purred at the sight, unable to help it.
Though his father smiled, he didn't comment on the sound.
How could he? Thranduil knew that soon the two were to be parted.
Legolas entertained the thought it was but for a week, but his father knew better.
The thoughts left him as Rúmil stepped forward. The youngest of the brothers was stunning, dressed in the palest green robes, he looked amazing with the circlet especially designed for him.
Made of mithril it was beautiful in colour. Thin and twisting wires made up for a stunning headdress, finished off with silver ivy leaves. A great one at the back where the circlet came together, two smaller ones at the side and then four leaves in the front, three in a row, with a bigger one in the middle, and one dangling below the emerald stone set in its center.
The reception itself was simple and one of many blessings directed at the couple.
Thranduil smiled then, as he was asked about his vows, knowing Rúmil had not expected any. They had spoken of it and it had seemed unnecessary, but now… now all he could think of was to speak these vows to let Rúmil know just how much he meant to the King, "Rúmil, as I stand here before you, I can see all that I fell in love with. Every day spent with you is a reminder of how you make my life complete. I am so very blessed to know your love. I thought I would never learn to love again, but you … you broke through all my defenses. I cannot thank the Valar enough for allowing you into my life. I give you this ring, gûr nîn, with the promise to love and protect you, to be with you forever as the Valar allow it and to cherish every moment with you as if it were the last moment we shall have. I love you."
Rúmil could not stop the tears from trickling down his cheek at Thranduil's words. This must be the happiest moment of his life. He watched as Thranduil slid the ring on his finger. He had clearly gotten the 'feminine' version of the two; the ring complimented his circlet, made from the same metal, it too seemed to have the light ivy leave pattern imprinted on it and a small emerald stone was at its center.
Thranduil's was far more masculine, the ring was thicker and the stone larger.
It suited him. Rúmil smiled as he too thought of some impromptu vows, "When we met, I thought you were a big, scary man. Intimidating, arrogant. A true King. Since then, you have shown me you are so much more. You are kind, loving and amazing at everything you do. I could not imagine myself with anyone else. I may not have your strength, or size, or royal blood, but you have my love and devotion always."
They didn't need for anyone to tell them they could kiss.
A day later…
The festivities following the reception had been incredible, music, food, wine…everything in great abundance.
The festivities had, however, been cut short. More spiders had come down from the South, from Dol Goldur. Orcs had attacked their borders. Darkness was spreading.
The last night Haldir and Legolas would have shared together, too, was ruined.
Come morning, Haldir was reluctant to leave.
He was no fool to circumstance. He had entertained the thought that this would only be but a week to Legolas, but he knew better.
The attacks on Mirkwood were increasing, Legolas couldn't be missed and, like Haldir's duty to Lothlorien he wouldn't be able to say no.
In addition, his own Lord had been clear; he was to return as soon as possible.
Haldir doubted he would get to leave to visit Mirkwood again.
It would not last long. It would be over before they knew it.
Then, they would be together forever and nothing could change that.
It would only be a week.
That was Legolas' vision. Haldir let him keep that thought, he figured if Legolas managed to make it that one week, another and another would not be so hard.
In his heart he feared they would not be reunited for years to come.
He wasn't so wrong.
What was to be but a short event would take more time than any of them had expected.
What was to be a swift solution turned into an endless battle for Mirkwood and Rivendell. Lothlorien seemed spared by the grace of the Valar, now that the Galadhrim brothers had returned.
One week turned to a month, one month turned to a year and before they knew it, 60 years had passed without barely any time spent together because none could truly be spared long enough to visit the other.
60 years had passed and Elrond had yet to speak of that he had seen in his visions. The deaths of many, deaths that would shatter every bit of happiness.
Glorfindel kept telling him that had to be the way, it was better if they did not know.
Elrond did not agree; some had not seen each other since their separation, those that had had only spent a few days together. A few days in the life of an Elf was nothing. A passing memory of little meaning.
They deserved to know, to face their ends having said all they must and wanted to, to their loved ones.
Glorfindel told him no, told him to wait. There was still more than enough time.
So he did, but not at all gladly.
That all changed when a group of hobbits, along with Gandalf, found their way to Imladris and revealed a dreaded doom he had already seen. The Dark Lord had returned. The world of Middle Earth was at the brink of War.
People would be lost.
The world would forever change.
End...
But don't worry, look for the story called "The End of my World", the sequel to "The Curse"
