Disclaimer: I do not own the Lord of the Rings (and associated) book series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Here I am again, I'll try to make sure to update this in a timely matter, but I probably won't be able to keep the same fast pace. Real life and all, you know, plus the time it takes to write each chapter.
Chapter 4--Musings and Discoveries
Glorfindel walked towards his chambers lost in thought. He couldn't understand why he suddenly had thoughts of how beautiful Erestor was. He'd never really thought of it before. He had always found the advisor to cold and to proper for his tastes. That was why he enjoyed trying to get a rise out of him with pranks and teasing. He came to his chambers and went inside, closing the door behind him. So what changed? For a moment when I grabbed his arm I had this ridiculous urge to kiss him, he thought. He laughed at the thought. It was indeed a ridiculous urge. If he had done it then he would have been picking his teeth from the floor for certain. That reminded him of something else. Erestor's arm was more muscular then it should have been, more suited to a warrior then a scholar and diplomat.
Glorfindel shook his head. Erestor was no warrior. He had no weapons skills at all; indeed Glorfindel had never even seen the advisor pick up a weapon. There had to be some kind of explanation, there had to be. Glorfindel cursed and shook his head. He threw himself into a chair and allowed his thoughts to roam freely. Now that I had allowed the thought in I have to admit that Erestor was extremely attractive. His dark hair and eyes were exotic and compelling. Half my men stare at him when he is with Elrond, but I have never seen him with a lover or heard mention of one. I wonder why? Glorfindel stood and left his chambers; perhaps Elrond would answer some of his questions.
*Meanwhile*
Erestor was also a bit flustered by the encounter with Glorfindel. The balrog slayer had never touched him before and when he had it had startled Erestor a bit. "Damn him and his pestering! I should have locked him on the balcony. It would have served him right!" he said. That of course brought up the question of why he hadn't done so. He could have also locked the library doors. Erestor knew that Elrond had a key, so it wouldn't matter to him. If the doors were locked then Glorfindel couldn't enter because he didn't have one. It would keep the seneschal from bothering him, but Erestor hadn't done so. Erestor frowned. Is it that I enjoy Glorfindel's attention despite his childish behavior? He thought. "Nonsense, Glorfindel is nothing but an arrogant, annoying nuisance and I have no time for this. I have work to be done," he said aloud. He sat down at his desk and picked up the next parchment that needed to be read, only to find he couldn't concentrate. Muttering curses, he rose and left the library.
A soft knock on his study door made Elrond look up from his paperwork. "Come in!" he called. He had expected Erestor, so he was rather surprised when Glorfindel walked in.
"Am I interrupting?" Glorfl asl asked.
"No, of course not, mellon-nin. What is it?" Elrond asked.
"It is Erestor," Glorfindel said.
Elrond raised an eyebrow. "Erestor?" he asked.
"Well, more like my thoughts about Erestor. I am finding myself attracted to him for some odd reason and I realized I know little about him," Glorfindel said.
"I can tell you only a little. He was born in Mirkwood. His parents were killed when he was very young and he was raised in a foster family. He learned his scribe abilities there and eventually came here when he reached his majority. He proved himself to be an excellent scribe and eventually I also realized he was a skilled diplomat. I made him my chief advisor and I have never regretted it," Elrond said.
"I never knew Erestor was from Mirkwood. His hair is dark and most Mirkwood Elves are fair haired," Glorfindel said thoughtfully.
"Erestor's father was a friend of mine. He married a maiden from Mirkwood and went there to live. We lost track of each other. I was quite surprised when I found out who Erestor was. There can be no doubt though. Erestor looks just like his father," Elrond said.
What about lovers? I have never seen him with anyone. Most of the maidens and a good portion of my men would court him if he would allow it," Glorfindel said.
"I cat ant answer that. Erestor has never spoken of any and it is not my place to ask," Elrond shrugged. "I fear that I have told you all I can."
"Thank you, Elrond," Glorfindel said. He stood and left the study. When he headed towards his chamber Glorfindel noticed the library doors were open. He looked inside and found Erestor wasn't there. The library was gloomy with the balcony door closed. A single lamp on the advisor's desk was the only light in the room. Suddenly a wicked notion came to Glorfindel. He hurried to his room to fetch what he needed then hurried back to the library. After all was ready, Glorfindel hid himself in the shadows and waited for Erestor to return.
Erestor reentered the room with a goblet of brandy, which he preferred over wine. Sighing, he set the goblet on the desk then opened the drawer in the front of it. Suddenly an ugly, huge spider sprang from the drawer straight at his face. Erestor couldn't keep from crying out and stumbled back from the ugly thing. It was then someone grabbed his shoulder. Without kingking, Erestor reacted.
Glorfindel hadn't really expected such a reaction from the advisor and he definitely didn't expect what happened next. His wrist was seized in a grip like steel and he was yanked forward. His eyes widened as he felt his feet leave the floor. An elbow hit him in the stomach, driving the wind from him and he was thrown over the desk and Erestor's shoulder. Yelling, Glorfindel landed heavily on a chair that promptly was reduced to kindling and there was a sharp snap from his arm.
Erestor stared at the tangle in front of his desk. "By Eru, Glorfindel! What did you do that for?" he demanded.
Glorfindel clutched his arm, which hurt. "It was only a joke and how in Arda did you do that?" he asked.
Erestor didn't answer. He was taking a closer look at the spider and realized it was fake. "You fool! You idiot! How dare you! I am heartily sick of your childish pranks! You are supposed to be a warrior! Start acting like one!" Erestor yelled. He grabbed the spider and yanked, breaking the cord it was suspended on then threw it at Glorfindel.
"You did not answer my question," Glorfindel said.
"I am not going too either! Get out of here!" Erestor shouted.
Just then the library doors opened and Elrond hurried into the room. "Erestor? I heard you cry out. Are you hurt?" he asked then he saw Glorfindel and sighed. "Now what has happened?"
"This oaf hid a damned spider in my desk!" Erestor said angrily.
Elrond looked at his seneschal. "Glorfindel?" he asked mildly.
"It was only a joke. It was not real. Look," Glorfindel said. He held up the spider. "I did not know that it would cause such a reaction."
"All I saw was this hairy thing leaping at me. The light was dim. How was I to know it was not real?" Erestor demanded.
"It was in a desk drawer! How could it have been real?" Glorfindel protested.
"Honestly Glorfindel, this was a stupid stunt to pull," Elrond sighed then noticed the balrog-slayer had dropped the spider and was clutching his arm. "What is wrong with your arm?" Elrond asked.
"I think it was broken when Erestor tossed me over thsk ask and I still want to know how he did it," Glorfindel said.
Elrond looked at Erestor. "You tossed him, Erestor?" he asked.
"He startled me by grabbing my shoulder from the dark. I am sorry," Erestor said.
Glorfindel was pleased. "Apology accepted," he said.
Erestor glared at him. "I was not talking to you!" he spat. "You deserved to get tossed!"
"Enough, let us get Glorfindel to his room and I will get some things and tend his arm," Elrond said. Together they helped Glorfindel to his feet. Suddenly he cried out as a sharp pain shot through his ankle.
"What is it?" Elrond asked.
"I think my ankle is broken too," Glorfindel said.
Elrond just sighed and nodded to Erestor and they got Glorfindel to his chambers and settled on his bed. "Stay with him, Erestor. I will be right back," Elrond ordered and hurried off.
Glorfindel smiled at Erestor. "No apology for wounding me, advisor? You know if you wanted to be alone with me in my bedchamber you could have just asked, lirimar," he said.
Color flooded Erestor's face. "You arrogant, insufferable," he began.
"Charming, gorgeous, witty," Glorfindel supplied helpfully.
"You are wrong on the first two and only half right on the last!" Erestor snapped.
Elrond entered the room before they could get started and began tending Glorfindel's broken bones. "I think that you and I owe Glorfindel an explanation," Elrond said.
Erestor sighed and looked at Glorfindel who was watching him expectantly. Erestor had a feeling this was going to be a long afternoon.
