3 matchmaking

Chapter three Matchmaking

Haldir grinned, seeing Rumil actually read a book, when he entered the bedroom assigned to him and his brothers. They did not mind and there were even three separate beds in it. He has just finished his morning bath and he wrapped a towel around his wet hair and sat down.

He frowned when he saw Orophin reading a letter. “Tana ná i-técë atta?”
Rumil looked up from his book and nodded. “Aye, I wonder what’s in it. Did we miss something?”
Haldir shook his head. He didn’t think so. He shrugged.

“PHIN!”
Orophin looked up bewildered and blinked at Haldir before he sm at at him. “Nádeman, man quentet?”
Haldir grinned and sat down beside him. “What you’re reading? You keep rereading that letter. How old is it now? Certainly some centuries. Why not tell us who wrote it. Is it a love letter?” He smiled and cocked his head.
Orophin closed his eyes and sighed before he opened them again and locked them with Haldir’s. “In a way.”
Now Rumil got interested as well and placed his book aside. He never expected Orophin to actually answer Haldir. He sat down before his brothers and placed his hand on Orophin’s leg, who smiled appreciative at thetureture. “What do you mean ‘in a way’?”
Orophin shrugged. “It’s from Lady Celebráin.” He smiled at their dumbfound expressions and shrugged again. “Perhaps it is better if you read it yourselves.” He handed Haldir the letter who looked at it in disbelief.

After a deep breath he rested his eyes on it but instantly gasped. “The date….. she wrote that a couple of days before she sailed.” Rumil narrowed his eyes and all but hit his brother to read it. Haldir sighed and wetted his lips before he did so.

Hwarin Orophin,

Ve istal ciruvan rato. Autëa adel nossenya hwalyëans. Erestor, Glorfindel, híninya ar nin verno. Manen Arwen? Iltámpër vanta sí? Aiya, Orophin, sin técë ná yúyo sarda ar ilsarda tecë. Tecan ú quetë namárië an ilmo o’l autuvar oi endanya ar fëanya, arú ni lyë meran.

Haldir wiped away a tear and he saw Rumil do the same. She had been right. They still carried her with them. Rumil wordlessly asked him not to stop and he returned to the words.

Nan moe ciran lerya tien. Iloi peluvan yamonyanna ar meruvan ilsen tien ve sin. U istan híninya oi hanuvar. Elrond cara, manenoi hwalyëaros ve hwalyëans vanta malli sinyar. Aiquen mo nai ná farya lá ni lerntë yalúmësse.

Rumil released a little happy scream. “She’s asking you to be a matchmaker for Elrond! Why didn’t you? He’s still alone.”
Orophin shook his head and merely pointed at the letter, silently telling Haldir to continue.

Orophin, ellë ar toroninya nar ú er nostarinya melloni esteli, narnya venta, ar lá. Enyalat manen ni lalanë tenen? Sí istan nás i-sanda. Melmë ar cuilë nár valdar, meldir, ar moet harmastyë. Sí lú ná penya cenen ta. Mapat eryë, mapat eryë ar vá lerya ! Antëan ron ellën ar cenuvan er nimo er ho sí.

Celebrían.

Haldir and Rumil blinked their eyes and needed some time to digest the words. But then the both of them locked their eyes with Orophin. “You’re attracted to Elrond?” Rumil voiced their question.
Orophin shook his head. “I was.”
Haldir smiled, nodding in understanding. “Which is why you didn’t act on this letter.”
Orophin smiled but shook his head again. “Nay. I did not see a reason. But now…” He trailed off and hesitated before he continued. “Her words are true, brothers. Life is too precious to waste. And why live it alone when you don’t have to?”

He sighed. “I figured I would watch for signs and if he were interested in me I would have helped him heal. I would have. But I never saw any signs.”
Haldir nodded, still smiling, but Rumil cocked his head. “Is there something we need to know, toron?”
Orophin nodded. “Aye. I am going to court Elrond.”
Haldir gasped and slid down the couch. “You’re going to what? But why? This letter?” He shook his head, not understanding his brother at all.
But Rumil looked into Orophin’s eyes and saw the simple truth. “You’re no longer attracted to him. Meliron.”

He smiled at the spreading blush and sat up to hug him. “Well, you’re a stubborn mule, so whether I give my blessing or not doesn’t make a difference. Might as well give it.” He pulled back and smiled warmly. “Happy courting and let me know if you need any help.”
Orophin smiled gratefully and nodded. “I will. Thanks. Haldir?”
Haldir flared up and hugged him as well. “Of course I stand beside you. You just caught me off guard just now, that’s all. But I do hope he returns it.”
Rumil nodded. “He must. I do not think she would have written that if he didn’t.”
Haldir sighed. “That’s the only reason why I’m allowing this.”
Orophin laughed. “Really, Haldir, I can take care of myself and I will guard my heart. I have for a long time.”

Legolas looked around carefully. He has heard noises: someone was coming this way. But he wanted to be alone. He groaned. He’s just escaped Arwen, who had offered to nurse him while Aragorn and Gimli relaxed. He should have known better than to try it with her. She was Galadriel’s granddaughter after all and Glorfindel himself has taught her how to track someone down.

His eyes widened when it wasn’t Arwen coming in his view but Glorfindel. He sighed. That he didn’t mind. And if the blond was sent by Arwen he would just run away. He’s well aware he runs faster and he has the advantage of being at home.
Ditching the blond would be easy.

But as the seneschal approached him Legolas decided not to wait but start running. He’s recognized the horny and hungry look in those eyes. /No way I’m gracing his bed. I should have warn my people for him. Who did he take last night?/

He sped up and flew through the trees, not looking where he was going. He ran and ran and only stopped when he heard voices.
Forcing his senses to full alertness he shook his head. He’s run all around the palace from the back to the front, but had covered more distance than the normal road.

He smiled when he identified one voice as Elladan’s and walked closer, only to double over in pain. The headache was back.

Erestor sighed but allowed the twins to pull him along. “You are too broody, Erestor. Come on, there’s so much more Mirkwood to show you.”
Erestor shook his head. “Elladan, isn’t it about time you take a mate? There are plenty nice she-elves here.”
Elladan nodded. “When I meet someone I like, I might. But I doubt I’ll meet anyone who’ll share me with my twin.” He yelped when Elrohir punched him and instantly glared at his twin, who glared back. It was the worry in the orbs that stilled Elladan’s words and he narrowed his eyes.

Elrohir didn’t speak but embraced Erestor instead. “Erestor, meldir, what is it? I saw your pain at Elladan’s words. What is it?”
Erestor shook his head and pulled back but Elrohir refused to release him just yet. Elladan walked around the advisor and hugged him from behind. “Ata asked us to look after you. Why won’t you let us?”

Erestor closed his eyes and his icy glare came back, making Elrohir jump back instantly. Erestor freed himself from Elladan’s grip and looked at them. “You two are squishing me to death and the only excuse you give is some illusion.” He shook his head and turned to walk away only to halt dead in his tracks.

Elladan followed his gaze and gasped when he saw Legolas bend over, his hands holding his head. He ran closer but Erestor pulled him back. “Careful, he might not be aware of your presence and you don’t want one of his daggers in your belly, do you?”
Elladan blushed and backed up. He allowed Erestor to handle it. Even if the Prince were to launch at the counsellor, Erestor would easily avoid it. Not even Glorfindel has ever managed to surprise him. “Prince Legolas, what is wrong? Do you want a healer?”

Hearing that made Elrohir come to life and he ran back, intending to fetch his father while Elladan stepped a little closer, he wanted to keep both elves in his vision.

Erestor knelt down before the elf and reached out. “Legolas, it is Erestor. Elrond’s counsellor. Do you need some aid?”
Legolas raised his head and shook it. He smiled at the elf before him and silently thanked Elbereth it wasn’t any of his ‘nurses’. “Nay, thank you, counsellor Erestor. I am fine.”

Erestor shook his head. “Nay, you are not. Elrond told me you shiver, sway, lose your breath and suffer headaches. That does not happen to an elf who is fine.” He smiled at the angered expression. “Hasn’t Elrond spoken with you yet?”
Legolas shook his head and hope entered his eyes. “You know what’s wrong with me?”
Erestor smiled at the words. “Yes and no. I know of options, and to be honest, they are the only ones I can think of. But maybe there are more answers in your father’s library. Or in Gondor. I will search them if you want.” golagolas shook his head. “Nay, you should enjoy yourself, counsellor. It is just a minor inconvenience, I assure you.”
Erestor frowned. “Well, those headaches are the result of a bond or connection you have. You feel someone else’s pain. And judging by the force I’d say it is emotional pain. You need to find out who you yearn. Well, not necessarily yearn, but…”

Legolas nodded. /Are you in pain? I like you, Erestor, and it was your face that kept me going at Helm’s Deep. Yours and father’s. But I know father is all right./

He frowned. “Can it also be someone loves me and it is his or her pain I feel?”
Erestor frowned but then nodded. “Aye, it could be. I know very little of this, Prince Legolas.”

Elladan frowned. /Or you are sensing Erestor’s pain. He clearly was in pain just now and you had that headache attack you. Yes, I am sure now. It is Erestor’s pain he’s sensing. But what pain? Until today I never even thought he could be in pain./ Within him a determination was born and he decided to go after his twin and talk this over. They had to do something. “Erestor, I am going to see where Ro is. You and Legolas escort each other back.” He ran before either of them could reply.

Legolas shook his head. “He never changes. At all.”
Erestor grinned. “Aye, sometimes I think we should reinstall his rocky horse.”
Legolas grinned and stood up. “Forgive me for interrupting your conversation. That was not my intend.”
Erestor nodded. “It wasn’t your intend to get a headache either. Are you sure you are all right?”
Legolas nodded. “Ayeoughough the talks with father, Elrond and Celeborn are rather tiresome.”

He smiled at Erestor. “About our future. What do you think?”
Erestor frowned. For a moment he was lost on the meaning of the words but soon figured it out. He gasped and stood still. “We’re not returning to Imladris?” His voice was painful and involuntary tears crept down his cheeks.
Legolas looked hurt. He had thought the other knew and now he probably disrupted the relationship between Erestor and Elrond for ever. He bit his lip. “That’s to be seen. They’re unsure whether we should all move to one realm or build a new one together. But we can’t remain as scattered as we are now.”
Erestor nodded. “I am not living in trees!”
Legolas sighed. “Well, father thinks we should all move to Ithilien, because it has trees and a waterfall and looks beautiful and you can build houses there as well.” He laughed. “And I can hand over the governing to Celeborn, Elrond and father. But Celeborn prefers to move to Imladris.”
Erestor sighed. “Elrond will rather not return. Not if there’s an alternative.”
Legolas smiled ruefully. “Sorry. But maybe you’ll like Ithilien?”
Erestor shook his head. “I am going back to Imladris. It’s my home. I cannot leave another home.”

He was silent for a while. “But there are a lot of vacant houses now and there are lot of trees nearby, the woods. Maybe we can work out a plan to house the tree-elves as well? Why mit bit be Ithilien?”
Legolas felt guilty for paining Erestor while everything was still insecure and needed to make it up. “I will suggest it to the others. I don’t mind where I live: Ithilien or Imladris. So it will be settled. Celeborn and I will choose to go to Imladris, father will have no choice but to agree. And I am sure Elladan and Elrohir will turn their father around.”
Erestor sighed. “They don’t even know about it.”
“Yet!” With that Legolas ran off in search of the twins.

Translations:
Tana ná i-técë atta means Is that the same letter?
Nádeman, man quentet? Means I’m sorry, what did you say?
Note: nádeman is a mixture between Quenya and Sindarin. Firstly because neither language has a verb for I’m sorry and I wanted and needed one and secondly because I think Sindarin not only ‘stole’ from Quenya, but that the process went the other way around as well.
Meliron means : you love him

Dear Orophin
First part: As you know I will sail shortly. It pains me to leave my family behind. Erestor, Glorfindel, my children and my husband. How is Arwen? Has she started walking by now? aiya, Orophin, this letter is both hard and yet easy to write. I write not to say goodbye for none of you will ever leave my heart and soul, nor I yours I hope.
Second part: But I must sail in order to set them free. I shall never return to my former self and I will not bind them like this. I don’t know if my children will ever understand. Elrond does, though it pains him as much as it pains me to part ways. He is the reason I write you, Orophin. I hate leaving him alone and bereft of love. As my sailing makes no difference here I have thought long how to bring it back to him. Truth is: I can’t! But I did think of someone who can. Someone who might complete him better than I once did.
Third part : Orophin, you and your brothers are not only my parents’ trusted friends, you are mine as well, and more. Remember how I teased you? I now know it was true. Love and life are precious, my friend, and you should treasure it. Now that it is latelate I see that. Take it, grasp it and don’t let go! I give him to you and will focus on myself only from now on.
