Departure
Orenin
was dressed in Arwen’s borrowed gown and pacing up and down the outer room of
their chambers when Legolas returned, a smile for her on his face. “Let us walk,” he said. “I have good news for you.”
They
walked arm in arm around the paths of Rivendell, marveling at its beauty. Orenin sighed. “I’m not surprised that I was healed
here. This is a beautiful place.” She took his hand and kissed it. “I certainly found the cure for my loneliness
here.” She had seen many places of
beauty on many worlds but Rivendell was exceptional. “I’ll hate to leave this peaceful house.”
“It
will be empty soon,” said Legolas.
“Amdirion tells me they will soon leave to take the ships from the Grey
Havens.” He had been saddened if not
surprised at the news and had not been able to change his friend’s mind about
leaving for Valinor.
“You
will not go alone to Mordor,” he announced.
“I have arranged it with Gandalf.”
He told her about the council meeting and how he had volunteered to be
part of Frodo’s escort and guard; after the Council had been adjourned, he had
remained to speak to Gandalf, who had agreed that she should accompany them to
Mordor. “So you will not be alone.”
“I
can travel faster alone, Love, but I will be glad for your company.” She thought for a moment, then smiled up at
him and said “I assume we will leave first thing in the morning?”
He
looked at her, puzzled, then smiled as he
understood. “I am sorry Love. We travel with those who would travel during
the day.”
“I
have to go speak to Arwen,” Orenin said as they walked back into Legolas’s
chambers. “Amdirion told me that Lord
Elrond had my clothes burned. Arwen’s
dress is beautiful but I cannot travel in it.
She must have something more suitable for travel.”
Legolas,
already in the inner room, shouted out to her “Orenin, come in here. I do not think you need to worry about that.”
She
went in and saw the outfit of clothes laid out on the bed. She picked up each of the articles of
clothing, admiring them. Her weapon had
been returned, fastened to a leather belt.
She was most taken with the black hooded cloak. “These are beautiful, Legolas!” She picked up each of the articles of
clothing again, examining them all, boots to cloak, amazed at their
beauty. She then looked over at the
quiet elf and smiled. “What else could I
need?”
“Perhaps
one more thing,” he said gently, looking down at the large goblet on the table,
filled with red liquid.
Legolas’s
hands grasped the sheets and he moaned softly; she moved again and his hips
rose off the bed and he gasped in his pleasure.
“Orenin…stop…please…I am too close.”
He looked down the length of his body at her. “Please.
I want to be inside you.”
She
raised her head from what she was doing.
“You are inside me,” she smiled and resumed, increasing her rhythm and
pressure until he shouted and his body convulsed in his release. She knew he felt guilty at this; he believed
it selfish and thought he was taking without giving. His generosity in love was one of the things
she loved about him. But she wanted
this; she loved doing this.
It
wasn’t his blood. But it was him.
They
were up early and dressed and walking down to the courtyard where they were to
meet with the others before departing Rivendell. As they walked, she twirled to watch her
cloak flare, so pleased in her new clothes.
Accustomed to wearing black, preferring it, these were still so different
from anything she had ever seen before.
“Prince
Legolas!” An elf ran up to them. “Prince Legolas, you forgot something,”
holding out Legolas’s velvet cloak. “I
found this in the banquet room.”
Legolas
rolled his eyes. “Aegnor, please keep it
as my gift.” He took the Countess’s arm
and kept walking.
She
smiled up at him and said “That’s a generous gift. It’s beautiful.”
“Now
I am only a member of a guard,” he smiled.
“I don’t need to wear that thing again.
We don’t want to be conspicuous.”
She
stopped and looked at him, eyes wide.
She looked over at the group gathering in the courtyard. “Four hobbits, two men, a
dwarf, a wizard, an elf and a vampire?”
She laughed. “Legolas, we
couldn’t be more conspicuous.” She
looked back at Legolas, who was smiling widely.
She returned his smile and raised her hand and stroked his face. They walked over to join the group, through
the many elves that had gathered to see them off.
It
had taken the arguments of both Gandalf and Elrond to prevent Silinde from
joining the group leaving for Mordor. He
had then tried to persuade them to wait before sending the Fellowship off. “Thranduil will send many guards for their
protection.”
“He
cannot send enough guards to protect them from what they will find in Mordor,”
Elrond told him. “Their only hope is in
secrecy and speed.” He left them to go
to the group but turned back to Silinde.
“And you will be needed in Mirkwood.”
Silinde
looked after Elrond. “He does not have
to go back to King Thranduil and tell him that his son is on a suicide mission
to Mordor,” Silinde said sharply. He
turned to Gandalf. “He does not have to
go back to King Thranduil and tell him that his son is with the creature he
sent Legolas to Rivendell to avoid.”
“Indeed,”
said Gandalf thoughtfully.
Silinde
looked over at Legolas and the Countess.
“Thranduil said he had warning from the Valar that she would return,”
Silinde said softly. “That is why he
sent Legolas from Mirkwood.” He walked
over to join the elves gathered to watch the departure of the Company.
Gandalf
looked over at them. “I wondered.” He smiled.
All was as it should be so far.
Gandalf walked over to take his place with the Fellowship. They received Elrond’s words of blessing and
farewell and were on their way.
They
traveled during the day, Gandalf taking the lead and choosing their road. Aragorn was almost always at the end of the
line of travelers; he managed the daily operations of their journey, assigning
chores and setting the night watches.
He
would give the Countess and Legolas the most time on night watch as he knew
they needed the least sleep. When the
Company stopped for the evening, he would send them to go out and hunt for the
group; he wanted the supplies they brought with them from Rivendell last as
long as they could. And because he was
looking for it, only Aragorn noticed that the plates of food given to the
Countess were taken by Legolas or would be passed on to one of the hobbits, usually
Pippen.
As
they traveled, the Countess felt comfortable with and walked only with Legolas;
indeed, the others in the Company did the same - at first each walking and
talking only to their own kind. This
gradually changed as the Company walked and as the days passed; they were
spending time together, getting to know each other.
And
so they traveled south.
