Is it so hard to believe
That hearts are made to be broken?
(HIM - One Last Time)
"Your father whipped you?" Aragorn couldn't believe what Legolas had just told him. "I never thought your father being that cruel..."
"He isn't anymore. When he first learned my trus feelings for Haldir he finally realised that he shouldn't mess with the Valar. Granted, Galadriel worked her magic quite well on my father, though they despise each other." He smiled shyly. "But my personal fight for Haldir was yet about to begin."

Life seemed to go on as usual the following weeks. Haldir and Legolas spent almost the whole day with each other, practicing, learning and teaching. Neither Haldir nor Legolas mentioned the kiss again. It almost seemed as if nothing had ever happened between them. Legolas tended to believe it. As long as he didn't look into those loving deep-blue eyes. Because every time he looked he found another star had died.
He cursed himself silently for being a coward and a fool. He knew he should talk to Haldir. Tell him how he felt. That he felt only complete when he was around. That the sun rose for him when the March Warden smiled at him. That he wanted to drown in his sapphire-blue eyes. That he wanted to be loved by him. And that he loved him.
But the weeks passed by without Legolas admitting it to himself. He concentrated on improving his archery skills and not to think or feel anything but the things he had to.
It was a warm and sunny day, already late in the fourth season. Legolas had been practicing and was now clearing the archery field of his stray arrows. He knew he was being watched; he felt the burning stare of another in his back. Finally, he turned around, spotting Orophin on the edge of the field, leaning casually against a tree. Legolas sighed. He had known this day would come sooner or later when he would have to confront Haldir's brother. Rúmil had been ignoring him since that fateful night, but Orophin had been watching him.
"He is dying, Legolas," he simply said when Legolas tried to walk past him without talking to him.
Legolas looked up to meet the intense gaze of the elder Elf. He thought about ing ing that he exactly knew what Orophin was talking about. But he was tired of lying and running. Most of to and from himself. He sighed. "I know."
"And yet you do not care."
"How can you say such a thing?" Legolas answered in shock. "Of course I care! How can I not care?"
"Then why don't you relief him from his pain? You know you should."
"I have missed my chance. There is nothing I can do about it anymore."
"Then tell me, dear Legolas, why is my brother fading away? If it's simply a chance gone by?" Orophin took a deep breath. "Why don't you talk to him? Tell him how you feel?"
"I can't do that."
"And why not?"
Orophin had a point. Legolas knew that. "Because," he snapped.
"Well, that's a perfectly good reason," Orophin shot back. "Perfectly enough to justify my brother's death. I should remember it for times when I am asked the question why."
Legolas' eyes flashed with anger. "You want to know why? Because my father would skin both of us alive! And because I do not deserve someone as lovely and beautiful as Haldir!"
"This is not about deserving, Legolas. It is about love. He is dying, Legolas. I mean it. This time he won't just run away and stop feeling anything inside. He will die."
"Why?" Legolas barely managed to mouth the question.
"Because." Orophin looked him in the eye. "Because he has given his word."
"To die?"
"No, of course not. He promised not to shut himself away anymore woe won't do it. But he lays himself down to die. Dying of grief. Dying of a broken heart. You have broken his heart, Legolas."
"And what shall I do about this?" he asked in a harsh and sarcastic way. He didn't know how to respond to Orophin's disturbing revalations. So, he fell back into closing the doors and shutting everything out.
But the tone was completely wasted on the Lorien Elf as he responded calmly. "You have two choices. Tell him what you feel for him. Or release him from his duties and let him return to the Golden Woods where he can lay himself down to die in peace."
"I do not want him to die!" he snapped at Orophin.
Orophin gripped Legolas' shoulders in a painful manner. "Then go to his rooms!" he hissed. "Now! And tell him you love him. Unless..." he released Legolas. "Unless you do not love him and I was wrong about you."
Legolas closed his eyes. He wanted to say something more but when he looked again Orophin was gone.
"I do love him," he finally voiced his admission. "But I am afraid to love him..."
Legolas tossed his head in denial. Not afraid of loving the proud March Warden, but afraid of the consequences. To Mordor with those consequences! he thought bitterly. You will go to him. You will go to him now. You won't run a second time.

His face was a calm mask, his lips a thin determined line when he ascended the marble staircases of his father's palace. He knew all the ways and would have found Haldir's chambers blind-folded. His mind was working rapidly on how to tell Haldir. Legolas was almost certain that the proud March Warden would not just simply forgive him. No. He would have to fight for Haldir's heart and trust again.
Totally unaware of his surroundings, Legolas reached the chambers of his tutor. He arched an eye-brow. Haldir's door stood lightly ajar. He frowned. Haldir was a very private Elf, keeping to himself when he was in his chambers. Legolas had been a regular visitor to Haldir's chambers, but he had never seen Haldir's door standing ajar. His mouth went dry. He krept nearer, almost afraid of what he might find inside the room.
Legolas peered through the slid. He muffled his cry with one hand. Haldir lay on his bed, leggings undone. Legolas youngest brother Lindor kneeled between Haldir's thighs, pleasuring him with his tongue and mouth. Legolas even had to admit that he would've found the scene highly erotic if the Elves where anyone but Haldir and his brother.
Watching them now hurt. Legolas almost physically felt his heart break. He should be the one in Lindor's position. He should be the one pleasuring Haldir and eliticing the low moans from his delicious lips. He wondered briefly whose name Haldir would whisper when he succumbed to the pleasure. Haldir must had been close to relief. He had started squirming and bucking beneath Lindor's ministrations, moaning... Legolas' name.
"No..." Legolas whispered unconsciously. He clasped his traitorous mouth with one hand, but Haldir had heard him.
"Legolas... no...," Haldir groaned hoarsely. "No... you shouldn't be here..."
"Neither should my brother," he responded weakly before he turned on his heels and ran. He heard Haldir yelling after him, but nothing in this world or another could have stopped him from running into the comforting woods.
Blinded by tears, his guts numb with pain, he stopped at last. He hadn't been paying attention and found himself now in a small clearing where he used to seek solitude and comfort. The sun still touched the ground with her warming fingers, drying the last drops of dew.
He sank to his knees, sobbing freely and without shame. He couldn't appreciate the beauty of nature in his state of mindless pain. The little mists that danced across the beds of grass couldn't take away the feeling of betrayal. The flowers that covered the ground didn't manage to cheer the crying Elf up either. He didn't want to be cheered. He couldn't find comfort here now. Too fresh were the images of his little brother kneeling in front of the stunning Elf. Even now, Legolas couldn't hate Haldir or his brother.
"Why? Why, Haldir? Why of all Elves in Middle Earth did you pick my brother to grace your bed?" he asked into the woods. "Were you so eager to bed another that you couldn't wait until you got home? Or is it the blood you desire?"
Of course, the trees did not answer. Not in a manner Legolas would have needed them to. They sang to him. Humming and soothing. He felt the Earth beneath him, heard the song she was singing to him. Even the little insects around him tried to comfort him. But the motherly embrace of nature opened the floodgates for Legolas. Reckless sobs shivered through the lithe body. He knew it was his own fault that Haldir has turned to his brother. He should have cleared the situation when he still had the chance to do it.
Now... Now everything seemed lost. He had lost Haldir and his brother. And worst of all, he had lost his heart.

It was already morning when Legolas woke in the soft grass of the wood. He felt sore and stiff. He was not used to spend the night in the open, but he couldn't have returned to the palace last night. Even now, he dreaded his return and the inevitable confrontation with Haldir. Would the proud Elf just laugh in Legolas face and tell him to move on? Would he apologise?
Legolas slowly wandered back to the caves, slipping inside unnoticed. He wanted to go to his chambers and never come out again as long as Haldir was in Greenwood. To his surprise he found Orophin and Rú saddling and packing their horses, preparing to leave. I
"Where are you going?" he asked Orophin when Rúmil walked back into the guest house to fetch the remaining packs.
"Home." He looked at Legolas, sadness shimmering in the deep blue eyes. "I am sorry, Legolas. Haldir is gone. He had been waiting the whole night for your return and kept your brother from taking his own life in doing so. He left with the break of dawn." He gathered Legolas into his arms when the young Elf started to cry again. "I am so sorry. I did not know."
"Neither did I, Orophin. Did he leave a message or anything else for me?"
