Disclaimer: I’ve upgraded! Now I’m not just a poor, pathetic Iowan…but I’m a poor, pathetic college student! Alas, that doesn’t impress the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien as they have denied my numerous requests to acquire rights to the characters! Pooey.
Summary: Well, here’s what a lot of you have been waiting for. Another chapter that’s a year over due. I have no excuses. In fact, I don’t even ask that you review because I’m not finishing this story for me…I’m finishing it for the people that have read it and became frustrated with it’s lack of ending. I know the feeling because I was just reading the most amazing story ever when I came to the last chapter. All that was typed was a short thank you and a notice that the author would not be finishing the story. I was disheartened and upset, then I realized I did that to some of you guys, too. So here it is…only two more to go and we can hog tie this beast and call it a day! Legolas finally spills what has been on everyone’s mind…what DID happen between him and Aragorn?
Chapter 5 – Break up and a Masquerade
"Our journey continued as the stories are told. We were…essentially inseparable, brothers in arms and devoted under different conditions. And even though we were fighting a war, it felt like we were living a fantasy. Well after the ring was destroyed the fantasy continued and it seemed that life was perfect. Nothing could change that. And yet all it took was one night."

His breath caught in his throat as he sat in the high branch of the tree. Soon his face turned a slight pink, yet he refused to breathe, as if breathing alone would attract unwanted company…or wanted company. The strong limb barely moved under his elegant weight and he whispered small pleas to it not to give his location away. It sang a harmony of reassurance in reply and he finally trusted his elven heritage enough to breathe.
"Legolas! Where did you get off to, Nínim? This is not funny! Show yourself!"
The blonde was trying not to giggle as heavy footsteps passed right beneath the branch he was perched on. The figure below stopped sharply and lifted his head, scanning the tree branches and listening intently. After using his keen ranger senses and deciding there was no elf in the vicinity, he continued walking into the trees.
Softly, Legolas leapt from his branch and landed with a soft thud upon the ground. To any normal human, the thud wouldn’t have been detectable, but to a ranger it was as clear as day.
Aragorn spun around and quickly scanned the area. The elf was too quick for him, however, and all he caught was a glimpse of shimmering blonde hair disappearing into the forest.
"Oh no you don’t! Come back here!" He ran after it.
They ran for almost an hour, the only part of Legolas the man saw was spun gold floating in the slight breeze then disappearing behind a tree.
Finally, Aragorn reached a clearing. It was a perfect circle lined with the most beautiful elven flowering trees in Rivendell. In the middle was a large, flat rock. Upon the rock, sprawled out on his stomach, golden hair strung over his bare back, only clad in his leggings, was Legolas.
"What took you so long? I feel like I’ve been waiting an eternity!" Dramatically, he rolled over on his back and placed the back of his hand on his forehead.
Aragorn’s chest rose and fell erratically as he struggled to catch his breath. "You jest…yet you could be the death of me."
"Me?" He propped himself upon his elbows. "What ever do you mean?"
The human exhaled loudly and sat down on the rock, his back to the elf.
"It feels so awkward to be at such peace when so much evil has happened."
Silence.
"So awkward to know I’ll be returning to Gondor as their king and without a heir."
"Aragorn…"
"No, I’ve made my decision because it was mine to make."
"Why would you give up so much just to be with me? I’m not worth it." Legolas reached up and softly stroked his back. Aragorn bowed his head and fidgeted with his fingers. Though his back was turned, Legolas could tell the man was smiling.
"I know people question what I have announced and think it is irresponsible…but they’ve never felt this. Most of them will spend their whole lives bound to someone who they don’t love but whom others have picked out and found acceptable. And they’ll never know. I pity them."
"You need a heir, Estel, you will not live forever."
Aragorn spun around and stared down, exasperated. "You say that as if I don’t already know it! I have thought about it night after night…as I sit in a dark forest, a damp cave, or in the midst of battle…I think about it!" He paused and scanned the trees for a moment then returned his gaze. "There are ways around it…mellon nîn. Adoption, election, inception-"
"Oh Aragorn. Please," He placed his hand on his strong jaw and rubbed the kingly stubble growing there. "This subject does not make me happy. Could we speak of something else?"
"Sure Nínim…like what?"
"I know! Your father’s masquerade ball tonight! This is so unlike Elrond. I used to think of him as fatuous, but now I conceive to rethink my conclusions."
"Little know this, but he has always been so. When I was a small child, my first memory of this place actually, I remember him decorating my room in festival decorations for my birthday. He allowed me to jump upon my bed and eat sweets; he even had the cooks make this miraculous dinner. Always he has been a gentle, yet firm guardian."
"Well, he’s sure out done himself this time. Arwen unselfishly designed my costume."
Aragorn smiled. "You’ll be the most beautiful elf there. I’m sure you’ll get much recognition tonight. Many of Elrond’s people are going to be there, as are your father’s. Many of the most beautiful elves in Rivendell and Mirkwood."
"My love, if I didn’t know better, I’d say you were jealous of all those eyes on my body."
"Of course I’m jealous, and I’m not afraid to admit it!"
"Why?" Legolas’s tone softened. "Do you not trust me?"
"How could you say that? Perhaps it is you that does not trust me?"
The elf grinned. Soon the grin turned into spurts of laughter.
"What’s so funny?"
"Your face…"
The man squinted in confusion.
"I am sorry, love." He wrapped is hands around the back of his king’s neck and nestled his face in his hair. "Confusion isn’t really a good look for you."
Aragorn smiled, then softly stroked the tip of Legolas’s elven ear. "And sadness isn’t a good look for you. As long as I live, I will never let you be sad, mellon nín."
Legolas sighed happily. Finally he felt content with life. With his love, he could close his eyes and let things happen…the world passed him by. Sometimes he lost track of where he was because as long as he was with Aragorn, he saw nothing but Aragorn.

Soon the two had to part and King Ellesar Telecontar was ushered off to flaunt many new outfits before the best was chosen, then summoned to stand at his foster father’s side while the guests were greeted. Legolas took the unwanted time alone to rebraid his hair. Soon he had two elven fish tails on the sides of his head that allowed small, soft, blonde locks to fall carelessly on his face. Arwen obliged to help him by adding a bit of her facial powder and helping him into his costume.
"Arwen, I do not blame you for the grudge you hold against me."
"Nay, I hold no grudge."
"But how could you not? I am the reason your love for Aragorn will diminish."
"Dear friend, he did not tell you the entire story?"
Legolas squinted his brow in confusion.
"Our love was slowly dwindling to that one feels for a sibling. We only hung on to hope that our love would be the rebirth of the land of men. But that hope has been born anew with your love."
"Arwen…"
"I leave my best wishes to you, Prince of Mirkwood. May you and Estel live the rest of your days in peace."
They embraced and Arwen left to go join her father and brothers. When he was alone, Legolas took the time to admire himself in the mirror for the first time. And what he saw was not that of the normal strength of a warrior…he looked retired to royalty. There were white feathers that were woven softly in his hair, a mask of beautiful elven designed that covered his eyes, a velvet white cape over a silver tunic and white leggings, and silver footings embroidered with Gondorian designs. He truly was a sight that he’d never beheld before.
"I hope Aragorn is pleased."

Meanwhile, Aragorn had been greeting people he knew, people he’d never met, and people he’d care not to know. Each one kissing his hand and bowing before they finished entering. Elrond had noticed his foster son’s distress.
"What’s wrong, Aragorn?"
"Nothing…"
"Nothing? You usually seem this consumed?"
"No. It’s just…why must these people treat me with more respect than you?"
"Because, you are the king of men, Estel. Their one leader. Without you, Middle Earth would have fallen. They feel they owe you that respect and you should allow them to show it to you."
Aragorn sighed, accepted his defeat, and ended the conversation. When he returned to greeting, he was face to face with Legolas. But this creature in front of him was not dressed up as a warrior. He was a soft creature draped in light. The entire ball seemed to hold their breath as Legolas bowed before his king, smiled, then turn gingerly to face the crowd. The nervousness he felt in his heart did not match that of the calm smile he displayed. It was planned that he would be the last to arrive so he could be escorted in by the human. Aragorn held out his arm, which the elf gratefully accepted, and the two descended the stairs as if they had been doing it their whole lives.
Some looked on with awe…others with disgust. Aragorn was too distracted by Legolas to notice. And Legolas was too distracted by them to notice Aragorn. He realized then he’d done the one thing that he hadn’t the right to do. He had stolen the future of Middle Earth. The future of men. The future of Gondor. And people hated him for it. Yet here he was, calmly smiling like this is what he was born to do. How could Aragorn be a respected king when no one respected his love? It was then that Legolas planned when he would leave him and set things right. Planned to run away.

"I suppose that’s when I broke my own heart. I had to, you see. Even your future depended on it."
"How did you…"
"Do it? It was very selfish of me. Then again, I had been acting very selfish. I’ll tell you, but know know it was the only way to set things right."
Without thinking, he let himself slip off of reality and wander in memory. But his daydream was blurry…he couldn’t make much of it out.

It was a beautiful day. The sun was shinning, the first time in a while, perhaps since they left Rivendell. And all was at peace, the ring destroyed, and the trees seemed to sing joyous songs.

"No, it was night and it was raining…" He said out loud, "The stars had been visible for a while, but that night it was raining. And there was a party at the House of Elrond; everyone was inside…everyone but him and myself. The water dripping off the tree’s leaves made them look like they were crying." He winced visibly as he remembered the events of that evening.

The rain dripped slowly from the silver leaves in which Legolas and Aragorn were perched under. The elven tree gladly protected the two lovers from the harsh drops. Aragorn wrapped his arms around the lithe elven body, keeping him firmly in his lap.
"Isn’t it amazing? Even in shadow and darkness this place can still be the most beautiful place in Middle Earth."
"It reminds me of home. I am anxious to see my ada. I hope he will be proud…of EVERY decision I make." There was a hint of sadness in his voice, yet Aragorn hadn’t caught it.
"You know he will be."
"At least someone will be."
"How can you say that? Everyone at the party was pleased!"
"Which party were you attending? They showed gratitude to you, loyalty to me, and nothing but disappointment to the two of us. It was uncomfortable. I don’t believe this will be as easy as you have hoped, Estel."
"When I’m near you everything seems easy! I could run for days and it seems easy. I could face the entire army of Saruon and it would seem easy! Or I could wrestle a balrog and it would seem easy! But understanding you, that’s something I find difficulty in as of late. What are you thinking? Why do you seem so sad? Did I not promise you earlier that as long as I live I will live to see you smile?"
Legolas tried his effort at a smile, but his heart wasn’t into it. "Perhaps this was a mistake."
"The party? It’s only rain, Nínim."
"No…us…"
"How can you even say that? Our love should be ours alone! Don’t let others discourage you. We need not share it with the world. I would rather live forever, here like this, than be king. If you’d rather we’ll…WE’LL RUN AWAY RIGHT NOW! RUN TO WHERE NO ONE CAN FIND US! WE CAN BE FREE IF THAT’S WHAT YOU WANT!" He shouted it with excitement and promise that caused Legolas more pain. He leapt out of his protector’s arms.
"No! It is I who will be running away, not you. I am sorry, mellon nín, but it is for the best. You shall be king. Think of me fondly…think of me often. When you whisper to the trees, I will hear. Let the wind carry your dreams to me. Perhaps we’ll meet again in another life. There, I will still love you. I will always love you. Good bye." Aragorn’s face fell as the elf said the words. For a moment, they held eye contact, both hurt and confused. Then Legolas turned and ran deeper into the woods, his nimble feet never making a sound. Aragorn quickly stumbled to his feet, then ran after him, blindly stumbling in sheer panic.
"WAIT! LEGOLAS! COME BACK, LOVE! LEGOLAS!"
At first he could still see the silver twinkling in front of him as he struggled to keep up. Slowly, the twinkle seemed more distant, dancing in between trees. Soon it was a fading memory of a fallen star. And still he ran in disbelief. He ran until his legs were numb and his mind racing. His determination seemed to fall into the same void he had lost his heart moments ago.
"LEGOLAS! COME BACK! Legolas…please." There was no answer. Soon he slowed down and looked around him for any sign. But the rain had washed all evidence away and he was just a damp, broken soul among a torrent of wind whipped trees. "Mellon nín…Legolas…Legolas…no…please…Legolas"
He fell to his knees there at that spot, chanting his love’s name until someone found him hours later. If he had been an elf…he would’ve died.

A/N: Was it worth waiting a year for? Probably…NOT! So sorry for any disappointment some of you may feel. You always could review and tell me all about your angsty feelings! Just let me get my note pad and we’ll get started, shall we? I can’t say when the next chapter will be ready, I can just promise it won’t be a year! Or a month for that matter…I’m feeling artsy.
