Chapter 4
Chance Meetings
Astaldo was wandering around the edge of the palace grounds not realizing he had walked so far. His head was spinning from the wine and his emotions were in turmoil. Never had anyone affected him like this before. He had stopped briefly at the fountain in the main garden, but had moved away as some other elves had headed in the same direction. He needed some time alone. He knew it wasn’t Legolas’ fault at what had happened. The King had planned this some time ago, and he couldn’t possibly know how strong Astaldo’s feelings were for Narninium. Seeing them together had made him so jealous, even he was surprised at how attatched he was becoming to her. Tinet was a beautiful girl, as was Harmony, but he was totally smitten with Narninium. The dance wouldn’t have been much of a problem until he saw the look on both of their faces, and the hug they had shared. It was all too much for him; He found a long stone bench in the far corner of the garden, slightly damp from the covering of red and gold leaves. He pulled his knees up on the bench, and wrapped his arms around them, hugging them to his chest. His head hung slumped over the top and stared at the ground, deep in thought.
Silently the elf walked over to the bench seat. The warrior was a sad sight at a party such as this. Surely he should be happy after such a close competition with the Prince. But she knew the prize was to blame.
“Hi, are you feeling okay?”
Astaldo jumped and realized his mind really had been somewhere else. “Hi, sorry I was miles away. Such a beautiful night, is it not?” He was still staring ahead, not really focusing on anything.
“How would you possibly know that if you haven’t been looking?” Lavishla grinned at him, her voice teasing. “ I have never seen such a sorry elf at a party before.”
“I just needed some time to myself to think things over. It has been a strange day for me, I’m used to having my feelings under control, it must be the wine affecting me.” Suddenly embarrassed he was telling someone his problems; he lifted his head and realized he did not know the elf that was talking to him. “I’m so rude, my name is Astaldo and yours?”
“My name is Lavishla. Surely you’re not depressed about losing to the Prince in the archery competition? I thought you were outstanding, and although you didn’t win, I would call it a draw myself.”
“Thank you. Yes, I worked really hard to get there but lost in the final moment… Do you know Narninium? You would have seen her singing and dancing with the Prince. I am sorry to say, I have drunk my way to this sad state.” He slid his eyes over to Lavishla, looking at her properly for the first time. There was compassion and understanding on her face, but there was something else. “Have we met somewhere before?” Astaldo asked her, his eyes desperately trying to focus on hers.
“Nooo…I don’t think so. You probably saw me watching the archery, for I love that sport myself.” Her cheeks coloured under his scrutiny. He really was a handsome elf. His silver eyes were somewhat misted over from the wine, but he had the most beautiful face. “ I saw Legolas…Prince Legolas, dancing with her tonight. She does have the most exquisite voice, but she didn’t enjoy the dancing much.”
“Did you notice the way they were looking at each other? What about that hug?” Astaldo clearly was fascinated with this elf maiden. Something familiar about those pale blue eyes. He rubbed his hands over his face, anxious for her thoughts on the situation.
“I saw the pained look on your friends face as he tried to guide her around the dance floor. I noticed you getting upset and then you left for the fountain.” She hesitated, not wanting to admit she had been taking notice of the whole event. “I think the singing may have put a spell over him, but he seems to be over that now. The King has been with her most of the night.”
Astaldo was watching Lavishla intently. He hoped she was right and that he was just over-reacting. Lavishla was picking his hand up pulling him to his feet. She was strong and her grip on his hand tightened as he tried to remain seated.
“Come on, you can’t sit here moping about while there’s a great party going on. Have a dance with me, that might cheer you up.” She smiled at him and as he stood, twirled around the end of his hand. She proved (yet again) to be a wonderful dancer and the music could just be heard from their part of the garden.
Astaldo felt his spirits rising with every step and twirl they did. She had a grace about her that he found attractive and it certainly took his mind off his previous sorrows. The music slowed down, and the two of them stared into each other’s eyes. Realizing how close they were getting, Lavishla spun away from him and ran through the trees. Surprised, Astaldo leapt into action and gave chase. She was faster than he thought. Must be that blasted wine, I can hardly keep up with her.
Lavishla laughed as she watched from behind a tree, how Astaldo, a competent warrior was now stumbling around the garden and could not keep up with her. He stumbled past and she sneaked up behind him and grabbed him about the waist, pulling him to the ground. Her laugh echoed around the trees when she saw the astonished look on his face. His puzzlement only lasted seconds as he grabbed her by the wrist and flung her on the ground beside him. She rolled away, too quick for his fuzzy movements, and was up on her feet laughing at him again. His stomach lurched from all the effort and he raised his hands in a swift surrender. “Okay, okay you’ve beaten me, I’m in no state to win anything at the moment. But, any other day and I would have caught you and pinned you to the soft green grass that I am about to lie my stupid head on” He stretched out, flat on his back and stared up at the night sky.
“Hmmm…it wasn’t a very fair contest, now was it?” She sank back down beside him, pulling her dress about her. The silver threads in her hair glittered in the moonlight. Her magenta braids hung down by her cheeks, which were a healthy pink after all the running. She watched his chest rise and fall, gradually settling into a normal rhythm and then quickly looked away as she saw him staring at her.
“Your braids are a lovely colour.” He reached up to run his fingers down one of them. Her body trembled involuntarily as he caressed the side of her face. She let out a long sigh and looked down at his ruggedly handsome features.
“I think you should stop or this elf maiden might not be able to control herself.” She giggled with embarrassment. Had she really just said that to him?
“Sorry, but there seems to be an abundance of gorgeous ladies about tonight, all of whom I hardly know.”
“What about Narninium? Surely you aren’t giving up on her so soon?” She played with a long piece of grass as she felt the guilt consume her.
“I don’t think she’s really that concerned about me, after all, it’s you that came to see if I was alright, not her.” He reached out for her hand, finding her playing with the piece of grass. She moved it away and proceeded to trace the grass gently down the hollow of his neck. He sighed and closed his eyes, letting the tickly feeling race through him, making his skin tighten. Lavishla watched him as his eyes shut. She knew she would be taking advantage of the situation if she allowed this to carry on its merry path. Astaldo was not really in a rational state of mind and might regret anything they should do together. Then there was Legolas to think of as well. She knew he was attracted to her as much as she was to him. It just wasn’t a good idea to get involved with anyone, but he did look divine lying there so innocently before her. Unable to resist the temptation before her, she bent over him and lightly at first, kissed his sighing lips. He wiggled about but didn’t stop her, in fact he reached up and pulled her head closer and deepened the kiss…

Swiftly Legolas ran through the royal gardens, scanning the partying elves as he went. He could not see Astaldo anywhere, although there were a lot of elves dancing, momentarily making it impossible to see everybody. By the table he saw Narninium chatting away to Tinet and helping herself to a bottle of wine. He knew it would not be long before she made her way back to the balcony. Not finding him, Legolas decided to search the surrounding gardens, where he had last seen Astaldo heading, hoping that he had not made the decision to leave because of him and Narninium dancing together. He really needed to talk to him. I must not be alone with Narninium again; it would not be fair to him. He reached the back boundary of the royal gardens before he noticed the stone bench. He had not been here for a while but it still looked as peaceful as ever. He approached it from the side and sprang lightly onto the damp stone, sending the autumn leaves floating on the night breeze. It was then that his sensitive ears heard the light murmurings of a she elf. He scanned the trees and garden not wanting to intrude on a couple, when he saw Lavishla’s head above somebody lying on the ground.
She appeared to be kissing the person and was now stroking his hair back from his face. It was such an intimate moment, that Legolas temporary forgot that he wanted to know this elf more than anyone, and smiled at the gentle touch she was administrating. Does she already have a lover? Legolas felt his stomach lurch at the thought and he moved stealthily closer to get a glimpse of whom she was with. He heard the elf on the ground let out a low groan and thought it might too private for him to continue, but he had to know. Don’t I have a right to know?
Legolas quietly moved his body around a huge tree that had a smooth bark and did not make a sound as he peeked around the corner. He looked on in shocked silence to see Astaldo lying below her, holding her hands, with his head back looking at the stars. His face was a mixture of pure bliss and heartache. Was this the person she had run off to see? Had she known Astaldo all along? Questions raced through his mind as he wondered what to do now. Confront the two of them, or wait and see what she would tell him. Legolas decided to go back to the balcony and wait for their return- if they return at all, he thought wryly. He retreated silently as he had come, and headed for the palace with a heavy heart and his mind spinning. Tinet cut him off and tried to coax him to the dance floor, but he refused her as politely as he could, explaining he had promised to meet with Narninium for a drink. She tried to conceal her disappointment by grabbing the next available elf and dragging him onto the dance floor. King Thranduil and Harmony were sharing a dance as he watched his son stride past heading for the stairs to the balcony. His gaze followed Legolas up, until he saw Narninium waiting at the top, drinking wine from a sparkling goblet. He smiled to himself.
*****
Narninium watched from her viewpoint on the balcony. Legolas looked stressed and she did not understand what could make him this way. It was, after all, supposed to be a party to enjoy. “Prince Legolash” She called from the balcony and collapsed into a fit of giggles at her slurred speech. This wine really is too much!
“You seem to have had enough to drink, my friend. You will soon fall asleep.”
“Oh I don’t mind, I’ve had a good time already. This has been a great day; I just wish I could see Astaldo. Did you not see him anywhere? Why the glum look on that charming face of yours?” Legolas masked his sadness and took his former seat beside the tipsy elf.
“I wish I could help you but he seems to have disappeared,” he lied. “I hope he didn’t go home,” he said, wishing that he would now.
“No, I asked Villia before and she did not think so. She said that maybe he needed some time alone to think. When I asked her what about, she did not really answer, but looked towards you. I don’t know what she meant by that. Have the two of you had a fight since the archery competition?”
“I’ve hardly had the chance to fight with him when I can’t even find him.” He replied somewhat irritable at her suggestion. Narninium’s cheeks burned as she realized she had said too much on the matter.
“I’m sorry Legolas. I did not mean any offence.”
“None taken. I’m sorry, I’m just not in the mood to discuss this right now.” As soon as he was finished speaking, a hand was placed on his shoulder.
“Legolas, I need to speak with you. Good evening Narninium.” Astaldo bowed low to her, slightly amused to see her hastily move away from Legolas.
“Astaldo…where have you been?” She blushed deeply and hung her head so low that her ringlets either side, fell forward, hiding her face and finding their way into her wine.
“Your hair, Narninium. Surely you do not wish it to smell of wine, no matter how good it tastes?” His voice was teasing as he gently smoothed her curls back behind her ear. She looked up and her lower lip trembled. Her eyes misted over and her cheeks burned even brighter. Her question seemed to go unanswered.
Legolas wriggled uneasily. “I have just been searching for you, Astaldo. You have been missing most of the night. Does something bother you? I thought you would be with Narninium and I, enjoying the celebrations. She has been most upset that you disappeared.” Legolas hid the emotional turmoil going on inside him.
“She seems fine sitting here with you.” Astaldo retorted. Narninium squirmed at the tone of his voice.
“I was merely keeping her company, as you seemed to be keeping Lavishla company.” Legolas shot back. He couldn’t help himself, finding Astaldo’s look too accusing for his liking. The conversation was not only heating up, but also speeding up and Narninium was having trouble keeping up with it all.
Feeling she was to blame for the bad feeling between the two of them, she got up. “I have just seen Harmony and Tinet, if you will both excuse me for a while. It sounds as though you both need to talk.” Narninium did not look at either one of them as she hastily curtsied and rushed away.
“After all that and now you’ve scared her away.” Legolas glared at Astaldo.
“Maybe your own comment was what made her want to leave. What do you know of Lavishla and I? Anyway, you and Narninium have seemed very cozy all night.” Astaldo felt himself sobering up rather too quickly for his liking. Having to deal with Narninium leaving and obviously upset with him, he also had the Prince of Mirkwood, his friend, angry too.
“I hardly think you are in a position to accuse me of anything. I was simply looking after her whilst you were off in the gardens. I have good reason to believe you are rather friendly with the elf Lavishla, is that not so? Legolas’ eyebrows were raised and his look impenetrable.
“I don’t know how you know of my meeting with that charming elf, but why should it concern you?”
“How long have you known her?” He raised his wine to his lips.
“About thirty glorious minutes…not long enough. You did not answer my question, my Prince.” Legolas sat up. Could that be true? They had only just met each other? More than anything, he silently hoped so.
“Then I take it the two of you are not lovers? Or was that glorious thirty minutes enough to hold my fears true?”
“Why, it seems you may have witnessed something you should not have, but it is a party after all, and I was in need of some beautiful company- even if only for thirty minutes. Unforeseen events tonight have sadly turned me to the wine. I’ve drunk much more than appropriate and may have made some hasty decisions. Although I did not regret them at the time, I’m thinking more clearly now.” He slumped down opposite Legolas. Very aware that he may have hurt two people he liked more than a little.
“In all honesty, I witnessed a very tender scene between you and Lavishla and I would not wish to take that away from you. However, I have enjoyed her company tonight also and she departed our conversation to speak with someone she knew. So naturally when I find her some time later with you, it got me wondering if she had known you all along.” Pausing, he cleared his throat, which suddenly felt thick and dry. “I wanted to go find both of you so we could all enjoy this evening together, only seeing the two of you already so intimate, I’m at a loss at what to do.” Legolas sighed. His heart and mind felt troubled and he found himself surprised that this she-elf had managed to affect him in such a way. “So now you can see how this concerns me, my friend. Do you not want to be with Narninium anymore? I was sure you were besotted with the Westie elf.”
Astaldo shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not so sure anymore as she did not think to come looking for me herself, but Lavishla seemed to really care for me and things just went on from there. It was not intentional, I can assure you of that, if I had known you and her…” Legolas raised his hand to halt his words.
“Nay, tis not your fault my friend. How could you have known that? We had a great time on the dance floor and we’re even challenged each other to a sword fight. She is a skilled warrior, so I am told.” Legolas grinned at the thought.
“Aiyee…I wondered how she managed to beat me so well! She loves archery too and we even danced around the garden together.” Seeing Legolas’ eyes widen, he quickly added, “She was just trying to cheer me up, you know?”
Legolas nodded. “So what did you think of her dancing? She’s as light as a feather on her feet.” His eyes glazed over as he remembered their shared moment.
“Oh, she was stunning, like you say, but we didn’t dance very long…” His voice trailed off and an embarrassed silence followed. “I suppose I am to blame, feeling sorry for myself and then letting her take pity on me. It’s just that seeing you and Narninium together, hugging and staring into each other’s eyes was just too much for me and I got angry. When I do come back here, you’re still with her and she’s drunk.” Astaldo’s face burned hot like a fire on a cold winters night. There! I’ve told him.
“The hug was purely for comfort, she was upset at not being able to dance very well. Surely you knew I was aware you were watching over us like a hawk and that I was aware of your feelings for her?” He failed to mention the racing of his heart when she sat next to him or how alluring her voice had become. “I think we can all blame my father’s famous Dorwinion wine for the strange events that have occurred tonight.” He chuckled and the sparkle returned to his gleaming blue eyes. Silver ones regarded him with surprise and gratitude.
“So what do you suggest we so to remedy this situation, Legolas?” Astaldo grabbed the bottle of the remaining wine and drank freely from it.
“I suggest we get these two ladies back here with us right now and have some serious fun, the way it was meant to be. All should be forgiven between the two of us and we shall not dwell on it anymore- agreed?” Legolas raised his goblet.
“Agreed.” Astaldo banged the bottle of wine onto the outstretched goblet and they smiled into their drinks.
