Chapter 5
"Calla Calla "
Calla moaned, and rolled over away from the nagging voice calling her name, and the fingers that were shaking her shoulder.
"Sleeping. Go away," she mumbled, swatting blindly at the annoying hand on her shoulder.
"Calla, you must get up we need to go to dinner," Haldir said, shaking her shoulder again.
Opening her eyes, she turned her head to meet Haldir's frown as he gazed down on her. "Oops. Angry Elf Alert," she whispered, trying to focus.
"We are going to be late, and King Thranduil does not appreciate being kept waiting."
"Okay, okay I'm up. How long did we sleep, anyway?"
"About an hour and a half."
"Wow that long! I may not have to sleep again for a month," Calla replied sarcastically. Suddenly she remembered what activity had tuckered her out, and she blushed. She noticed that Legolas was gone, and that Haldir was dressed in a dark blue tunic and black leggings, his hair neatly brushed and braided.
Sitting up, she asked, suddenly anxious, "Who is going to be at this dinner?"
"The King, his advisors, perhaps a few members of the court, a few of the wardens, Legolas, and us."
"Oh no. Not a chance, buster!" Calla cried, poking Haldir in the chest with one finger. "I am not about to be paraded around in front of a room full of strangers in my nightgown! I'll just pick at that fruit on the table, and go back to sleep, thank you very much."
"The King of Mirkwood has specifically requested your presence at dinner. You cannot possibly refuse," Haldir said, his frown deepening.
"Watch me."
Sighing, Haldir shook his head. "I knew you would not wish to appear in your own er frock, so I took the liberty of obtaining a new one for you when I bought mine." He nodded his head toward the dressing table.
Looking over, Calla saw a beautiful, pale blue gown of some whispery, gauzy material that shimmered in the dimming light. Rising from the pallet, she walked over to the gown, and fingered the material, thinking that it was most likely the loveliest thing she had ever seen. There was one problem with it, however.
"This gown, which you so kindly picked out for me, is nearly as transparent as my nightgown!"
"I like your nightgown. I had to look through many gowns to find something close," Haldir laughed. He knew exactly how she would react when she saw it, and had not been disappointed.
"I am not wearing this!"
"Oh, yes, you are. We are nearly late as it is, and if you do not get dressed immediately, I will simply throw you over my shoulder and carry you to dinner just the way you are!"
For the first time since she awoke, Calla realized that she was still completely naked. A blush rose from fee feet all the way to the roots of her hair, and she grabbed the gown, holding it up in front of her.
"Calla, by the Valar, it's not as if I haven't seen your body before why do you insist on such modesty?" Haldir asked, cocking an eyebrow at her, very amused.
"Because because just because! Now turn around, so I can get dressed!" She shouted, stamping her foot in frustration.
Chuckling, Haldir thought it would be more expedient to indulge her, although his thoughts were already focussed on how he would remove that gown when they returned from dinner. He turned his back to her, and listened to the soft rustling of the fabric as she got dressed.
"Okay I'm dressed," Calla informed him.
Halidr turned around and his breath caught in his throat. She looked exquisite the gown clung to her every curve, transparent enough to give the viewer the vaguest hint of what lay beneath the incredibly thin fabric. The color suited her as well, complementing her skin tone, and making the soft blue of her eyes dn. n. Her dark auburn hair, cascading down her shoulders in a tumble of curls made a lovely contrast to the paleness of the gown's color.
Rising from the pallet, Haldir walked toward her, he eyes giving her the impression that they might very well be late for dinner anyway, if she let him get within two feet of her.
"Haldir we're late. Let's get this over with," she said forcefully, quickly skirting him and walking to the door. He grabbed her arm, and pulled her to his chest.
"You look beautiful, Calla we will go now, but I will have your promise to return with me this night." He whispered in her ear, his lips brushing her ear.
"Where else would I go? You wouldn't let me have my own room, remember?" she asked, looking confused, and a little disconcerted at both his compliment and his breath on her ear.
"You'll most likely have the invitation of every Elf in the room," Haldir replied truthfully. "Promise me that you will return with me."
'I'm not about to go running off with a stranger, Haldir."
"Not even Legolas?"
"Not even Legolas. What happened tonight was a fluke - a mistake. I promise to return with you. I also promise that nothing is going to happen tonight between us!" She answ huf huffily, put off that he assumed she would do more than just sleep in the same room with him.
Pulling away from his embrace, she stalked to the door, leaving Haldir smiling an "I know something you don't know" grin.
He gallantly offered her his arm, and led her to the Great Hall, where the King and his guests awaited their arrival. Pausing just before entering, Ha loo looked down at Calla and whispered, "I do not mean for you to keep your promise if it is Thranduil who requests your company."
"What?" Calla asked, looking up at her handsome escort.
"Do not make the mistake of angering Thranduil. He is a King, and will not hesitate to retaliate if his pride is wounded."
"Haldir do you think I'm a whore? Why do you assume that I'll sleep with anything with three legs?" Calla asked, fire in her eyes.
"We have been over this before, Calla. My people do not hesitate to share pleasures of the flesh when there is an attraction we see nothing wrong with it. You are not a whore you are just very beautiful," he replied truthfully.
"I still have a problem with jumping into bed with anyone who asks, even if I do feel an attraction."
"Calla, please, for your sake, do not spurn Thranduil's attention should he bestow it upon you. He can be dangerous when crossed."
"Let's just go and have dinner, alright? He's a King - he can have any Elleth he wants. He wont give me a second glance."
Haldir shook his head, looking extremely doubtful, but led her into the Great Hall.
He led her to the main table, where a regal looking Elf, resplendent in the robes of his office was seated, watching her carefully. Calla blushed, knowing exactly what he could see through the thin fabric of her gown. "He's the spitting image of his son!" she thought. "Except for his eyes " While Legolas' eyes had been the color of a bright summer sky, Thranduil's eyes were color of cold, hard ice. They pierced her, seeming to read her very thoughts.
"Welcome Milady, to Mirkwood, and the Great Hall," Thranduil said to her in a deep, silken voice. "I trust your stay thus far has been pleasant?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," Calla replied, hoping that this was the correct way to address a King. She saw his eyes roaming up and down her body, and continued to blush.
"Please, sit at my table I wish to converse with you further," Thranduil continued, gesturing toward two empty seats across from himself and Legolas.
Legolas smiled at Calla, and she blushed yet again, this time remembering what had transpired between the three of them just hours before. His smile grew broader, and she realized that her nipples were jutting out from beneath her gown.
After they were seated, Thranduil addressed Calla again, asking her questions about her home, and the politics of her land. She really hadn't paid too much attention to politics, but tried to answer his questions as best as she could.
"Pardon me, I think perhaps I did not understand you did you say that each subject in your kingdom has a vote? To elect their new King?" Thranduil repeated, his brows raised in surprise.
"Yes well, it isn't really a kingdom. It's called a democracy, Your Majesty."
Thranduil snorted, throwing his head back and laughing. "Democracy? It's ridiculous! Imagine, voting for your new King preposterous! Anyone who would agree to such nonsense is either dimwitted or deranged!"
The entire Hall joined him in laughing, and Calla felt her ears burning with anger at their callous disregard for the beliefs of her people.
"It is NOT ridiculous, and we are neither dimwitted or deranged. It happensworkwork very well. And I'll tell you another thing if the King is not a good and fair ruler, the people can impeach him - throw him out of office and replace him with another!"
Thranduil stopped laughing, shocked at her outburst. He stared hard at her, taking in the angry expression on her face, and her hands, which were curled into fists on the table.
"Are you implying that I am not a good ruler for my people?" he asked her in a low, venomous tone. His eyes had narrowed, his shoulders tightened, and the room held its collective breath for her answer.
"No I don't know what kind of ruler you are. I don't live here. I do know that you seem to be narrow minded at best, since you scoff at new ideas without giving them consideration, and demean those who hold those beliefs without knowing them!" The words were out of Calla's mouth before she could stop them, not that she really cared. This Elf was the most unbearable she had yet to meet!
Thranduil jumped up from his chair in a fury, and so did Calla. They glared at each other, both breathing heavily from anger. Before Haldir could move, Thranduil's guards had arrows pointed at him and Calla.
Motioning for his guards to hold their fire, Thranduil said with a tense jaw, "No I will handle this one myself!" He took the few steps toward Calla, and without another word, picked her and slung her over his shoulder.
"Put me down!" She yelled, beating at Thranduil's back and kicking her legs. "What is it about you Elves that make you want to keep slinging me over your shoulders like a sack? Put me down!" Calla screamed into the vicinity of Thranduil's left ear, as he carried her through a door and into a hallway.
"Ouch!" How dare you spank me?" Haldir heard Calla shout as Thranduil carried her down the hall.
"Uh, oh," Haldir said to Legolas. "He's in for it now "
"OW!" Came Thranduil's voice from further down the hall. "Let go of my ear, woman! OW!"
Legolas spit out the mouthful of wine he had been drinking, looking at Haldir with wide eyes. "She twisted his ear?" Starting to smile, he continued, "Ada hasn't had anyone stand up to him in ages this is going to prove quite interesting." Growing somber again, he added, "Although, I hope he doesn't hurt her too badly."
"Her? I just hope he survives."
