5. Traveling in Hollin
The
Company had stopped for the night.
Aragorn had asked the Countess to secure their camp while the others had
their dinner. After checking the
surrounding area and confirming there was no danger near, she had returned and
leaned against a tree, watching the others eat.
Aragorn came over to her and studied her for a moment. “Lady, I am puzzled,” he said softly. “Legolas has told me of you…what you
are. Yet you walk during the day?”
She
knew Legolas had told Aragorn about her and her previous visit to
Mirkwood. She was pleased that there was
no fear of her in Aragorn and her opinion of him was rising every day they
traveled. “I’m traveling with this group
and this group travels during the day.
So, I must travel in daylight.”
She shrugged. “Lord Elrond’s
cloak protects me from damage; as long as the sun doesn’t strike me directly,
well, it’s uncomfortable, it tires me, but I can deal with it.”
“I
am sorry for your discomfort, Lady.”
“Thank
you.” She turned to go but looked back
at Aragorn and studied him. Legolas had
told her of Aragorn too; she’d seen kings on their thrones who didn’t wear it
as well. “Legolas chooses his friends
well.” She walked back to the group, sat
and stared into the fire.
Gandalf
walked up. “Where is Aragorn?”
“Roland
is there, tending to Bill,” she said absently.
“Who’s
Roland?” asked Merry.
“What?” She looked up, startled.
“You
called him Roland.”
“Did
I?” She smiled at Merry. “He reminds me of someone I knew a long time
ago.” Someone she had failed. She looked over at Aragorn thoughtfully. She wouldn’t fail. Not this one.
Not this time.
The
Company was preparing to leave after their mid-day break. They turned to look upon hearing Gandalf shout
at the Countess: “Do not concern
yourself with things that are not your business!”
Her
eyes widened in surprise. “I only asked
a question.” She took a couple of steps
back from him, her hands upraised. “I’m
sorry Gandalf. I was only curious. I meant no offense.”
He
glared at her, then stalked off.
Pippin
came over to her. “Walk with me. Back of the line.” He nodded in Gandalf’s direction. “Out of his sight for a
bit.”
She
smiled at him. “Perhaps you’re right,
Pippin.”
Another evening.
Dinner had been served and eaten.
Boromir had been teaching Merry and Pippin how to fight; the hobbits
were determined to make a better account of themselves
than they had at Weathertop. The others watched and laughed as often as
they offered encouragement and advice.
Pippin had been studying the Countess for some time and could contain
his curiosity no longer. “What kind of
weapon is that, Countess?”
She
thought for a moment, then stood, took the weapon off her belt and switched it
on. Everyone’s eyes opened wide to see
her use the blade of light to slice a piece of rock off of a boulder.
Gimli
picked up the piece of rock. “A
formidable weapon!” he exclaimed.
Pippin
ran over to her. “Can I try it?”
“Certainly,”
she smiled. She switched it off and handed
it to him. “Just touch that switch. There.”
Pippin
held it up and did as she had directed.
Nothing happened. His eyes opened
wide. “I’ve broken it! I didn’t do anything! I’m sorry!” said Pippin, panic in his voice.
She
laughed and said “Pippin, it’s all right.
I’m sorry.” She was truly sorry;
she hadn’t meant to frighten Pippin.
“It’s not broken. They’re made to
work only for the one for whom they were created.”
Gandalf
walked up and saw what Pippin was holding.
“Ahhh, your light saber.” He looked at the Countess. “May I?”
At
her nod, Pippin handed it to Gandalf. He
took it in both hands and it came on for him.
He said “I haven’t seen one of these in…” and raised the blade of light
over his head.
The
Countess had not expected that and her mouth dropped open in astonishment.
Gandalf
made a few passes with the light saber, then willed it off and handed it back
to her. “Magic tricks and
misdirection.” He smiled at her. “Perhaps it’s time we talked about how you
came to this world. And
your reason for being sent here.”
“When
you travel in time, it’s easy to lose track of time.” She had their full attention after telling
them about her arrival on this world, what she was seeking and why she was
accompanying them to Mordor. Now she was
describing her travels with the Doctor.
Pippin
was looking up at her raptly. She
smiled; she could finally begin to understand the Doctor’s love for teaching,
for making others understand the nature of the universe. She could do this too. “Yes, Pippin,” she looked up at the
stars. “It’s difficult to keep track of
time when tomorrow you could be two weeks ago.”
“Ohhh” he said, nodding.
“Are you going to eat that?” pointing at her untouched plate.
Legolas
laughed out loud and Gandalf starting coughing so hard that the smiling Aragorn
felt compelled to give him a few thumps on the back.
She
smiled wryly. “No, Pippin. I’m not hungry. You have it.”
He smiled and took her plate back to his seat at the fire.
When
he had recovered, Gandalf told her “Perhaps hobbits are not the right audience
for a lecture on traveling the stars.”
Usually
at night, when it wasn’t her turn to be on watch, Orenin made it her habit to
rest across the camp, away from Legolas, not trusting herself to get too close
to him. But that night, Orenin decided
she’d had enough of keeping away from him; Legolas lay on his back and she was
sleeping curled next to him, her hand over his heart.
They
had not been together since they’d left Rivendell. He knew she was dreaming of him and it was
proving difficult to keep himself calm; it turned to impossible when she
started slowly rocking her pelvis against his hip.
He
sat up. “I hear something in the
forest,” he said softly.
She
murmured “What?” still half-asleep.
“And
so do you,” he said, standing and pulling her up to her feet.
Merry
and Pippin, sitting up on watch, saw Legolas and the Countess disappear into
the forest. Merry nudged Pippin, who
reached over and thumped the sleeping Boromir on the back. Boromir came up on his elbow and frowned at
them. “What is it?” he asked.
“Seven
days,” Merry whispered to Boromir. “We
win.”
Boromir
sat up and looked over to where Legolas and the Countess had been resting. He smiled at the hobbits. “Yes, you win. My breakfast is yours tomorrow.” Merry and Pippin smiled at each other in
triumph.
Legolas
and Orenin ran some ways into the forest until he knew they were far enough;
the others might know what they were up to but they wouldn’t hear them. He pushed Orenin against a tree and they
kissed. Impatient to feel her body, he
pulled her vest apart, then unfastened her shirt, impatient but careful not to break
any of the fastenings. Then his hands
went to her trousers; he went to his knees before her and pulled them
down. “Orenin.” So intoxicated by her scent, he put his face
to her.
She
saw stars, though whether it was from Legolas’s mouth on her or the bang on the
head she’d given herself flinging her head back against the tree at the feel of
his tongue on her, she couldn’t tell.
She put her hands on his shoulders and gasped.
He
smiled when he heard her gasp; as she came down, her knees weak, he caught her
in his arms. They pulled each other’s
clothes off as quickly as they could.
Legolas spread her cloak on the ground and she lay down on it. He moved over her and she brought her hands
up to his hair and brought him down to kiss him. But instead of deepening their kiss, he
brought his mouth down her neck, to her chest, kissing, suckling at her
breasts, before moving farther down her body.
He placed his hands on her hips and she spread her legs to him. “Please…Love…oh!”
Smiling
at her reaction, he bent to her body and resumed his intimate exploration; she
moaned and writhed and gasped. He felt
her body tensing with pleasure and kept his mouth at her, driving her until he
could stand it no more; her gasps of pleasure drove him up her body and he
entered her. He thrust into her again
and again and again and she clutched at him, crying “Again, again, more.” Their world exploded around them and he
collapsed onto her, feeling her arms and legs around him, her love surrounding
him.
He
rested for a moment, stroking her hair, then asked,
“Orenin, what will happen when you find this thing you seek?” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I love you, Orenin; you cannot be taken from
me again.”
“Oh,
Love.” She didn’t want to think about
it, only wanting to keep him close. “I
don’t know what will happen. There is
only here and only now for me. I can’t
make any promises to you, except to love you always.” The White Guardian had said if she found the
segment of the Key, she would be where she most wanted to be. And what happened after that, who could
tell? She was afraid to feel hope again
but at least for now she was with Legolas, for now she held him in her arms,
and for now she felt peace.
The
clouds the Company had been traveling under for over a week were gone; it would
be a bright day. Legolas looked up at
the dawn sky and his heart sank. It
would be hard traveling for Orenin today.
Boromir and Gimli walked by him, looked up at the sky and Boromir said
in greeting “At last, it’s going to be a beautiful day.”
“Yes,”
said Legolas frowning and walked away.
Boromir
looked after him puzzled.
“Elves”
said Gimli. “There’s no figuring them
out.”
