5. On the Road
Aragorn,
Legolas, Gimli and the Countess rode at the head of the line with King Theoden
as the city of Edoras
emptied the next morning. He would soon order his soldiers spaced along
the line of his people to guard their journey. As they traveled, the line
of refugees grew as more of the people of Rohan joined the column from Edoras
on the way to Helm's Deep; dispossessed of their homes, some were carrying
wounded and all were sad and frightened.
That
first day and night passed with no incident. Her turn on watch would
not begin until later so the Countess rested, sitting with her back
to a tree, her knees drawn up to her chest, her cloak over her, listening to
the night. Legolas came over to her and said "I am cold."
"Come
here," she said, smiling and patting the ground next to her. He sat
down by her and, circling his arms around her knees, put his head on her
knees. She pulled her cloak over his back and then began nuzzling the
back of his neck, inhaling his scent. It was difficult to be this close
to him and not be able to touch him all over. "Do you know how
beautiful you are?" she whispered to him. "What the firelight
does to your hair, my beautiful Legolas?" She used her fingertips to
comb through his back braid, beginning to undo it.
Legolas
shivered at her touch and the feel of her breath on his neck. "Do
not start what you will not finish, Orenin," he whispered to her and then
left her, smiling; he could not trust himself to stay next to her. Later, though, he returned to share her watch,
standing behind her, his arms around her.
The
next day, Gimli rode one of the horses of the Rohirrim as Legolas rode Arod up
at the head of the column with the Countess. The Dwarf was determined to
find a way to get on and off the blasted creatures himself but, for now, riding
the horse was pleasant as Princess Eowyn was holding the bridle of his horse
and they were talking. His delight at making her laugh was
short-lived as her laugh spooked the temperamental beast into running away with
him. Gimli threw himself off the horse and to the ground.
"That was deliberate, that was deliberate," he announced.
Aragorn,
riding not far away with King Theoden, smiled. He knew that it was indeed
deliberate. Gimli disliked being
dependent on others for assistance on and off the horses when he had to
ride. Aragorn was just glad for Gimli that Legolas was riding with his
Lady farther up the column of people and hadn't seen Gimli's fall.
That
second evening also passed without incident.
Aragorn
sat with his back to a boulder, smoking his pipe, and watched Legolas and his
Lady. She had not been able to persuade the Elf to try Eowyn's stew but
she had finally talked him into sitting and resting; the thought occurred to
him idly that Legolas could not have told his Lady much about the nature of
elves.
Legolas
was sitting cross-legged and Orenin paced up and down, never getting too far
from him. She stopped next to him, stroked the back of his head, enjoying
the feel of his hair in her fingers, and looked up at the night sky.
"Do
you miss it?" he asked, his smile utterly failing to conceal his
discomfort at her watching the sky and his fear of what that might mean. "Your home?"
“You
are my home, Legolas," she smiled. "I was just admiring the
beauty of your night sky." She looked down at him and caressed his
face. "But this is the light I love the best." She looked
out over the valley, not forgetting that she was supposed to be on watch for
any danger.
She
knew Legolas worried that she would be taken from him again. But she also
knew they were not in control. She had tried to find her way back to him
for so long, a miserable time for her where her every waking was a fresh agony
and every sunrise a temptation. She
wouldn't go through that again. She would never leave him and while They could take her away, if They did, she knew she would
live only long enough to see a sunrise.
"You
shouldn't worry, Love." She bent to kiss the top of his head.
"You keep telling me we should have faith in the Valar. But what will happen, will
happen."
"I
know, I know." He sighed. "There is only here and only
now."
"That's
right," she said. She resumed stroking his hair, looking out over
the valley. "Only here and only now."
The
third day of the journey to Edoras dawned bright. Aragorn had been
allowing himself the luxury of believing that the trip to Helm's Deep might be
made without incident but he began to change his mind as he watched Legolas
part from his Lady. After a few sweet words, they had separated and she
had gone to ride at the back of the line. And Legolas had offered to
help Gimli onto Arod but the Dwarf had announced loudly that he
was done riding for awhile - "Sooner would I bear a horse than be borne by
one. I love my feet better today!" He would only promise
Legolas to hold onto the grey's bridle and keep close
to Aragorn.
Legolas
had to be content with that and ran up to the head of the line. Some
danger approached; both he and Orenin had sensed it that morning but could not
tell what or how or when or where.
Hours
later, still at the front of the line, he had paused at the top of a ridge and
waited; something was out there. Gamling and Hama,
leaders of the King's men, rode past him and on ahead, out of his sight.
But before long, Legolas heard their horses screaming their fear and then the
growls and Hama's shout, horribly cut off and then a shout from Gamling - "Warg!" - and
he ran up to see that Hama was down and Gamling was fighting the orc scout; Legolas put an arrow
into the warg and then ran down the hill to finish its rider.
At
the back of the line, the Countess rode in silence; she could feel the
discomfort of the people around her at her presence but it was nothing she
hadn’t felt before and she could ignore it. She sensed Legolas's
anger before she heard the shouts of Gamling and
growls of the wargs. "Something's going on!" she shouted.
"Come on!" And, not waiting for any response from the Riders
around her, she urged Medusand up the line to find Legolas, not knowing or
caring if any followed her.
She
was almost at the middle of the line when she heard Theoden shout
"All riders to the head of the column!" She caught sight of
Aragorn on Hasufel and Gimli being helped up onto Arod and she directed Medusand over to follow him.
Legolas
was standing alone in the field, putting arrows into the approaching wargs as
Theoden's riders came up to him; he reached up to Arod's
bridle and was on Arod in an instant.
The
Riders rode down the hill and met the mounted orcs in a great crash. The
Countess tried to keep track of Legolas's location but there were many enemies
to fight and she lost track of him almost immediately. And she saw
Aragorn only once; unhorsed, he had hold of the throat of an orc, still on his
warg. Then, attacked again herself, she could pay little attention to
what was going on around her and could only fight the orcs and wargs.
The
battle had begun to wind down and the Countess, after seeing Legolas was
unharmed, had searched for Aragorn but only for a short while. Not sensing
him, she looked for the orc who had had Aragorn by the throat when she last saw
him. She finally found the orc she was seeking, slowly crawling up a rise
that led to a cliff overlooking the river. She walked over to him; he was
badly wounded. She turned him over with her foot and knelt down to
him. She saw Aragorn's necklace in his hand. "Look at
me," she commanded the orc. He opened his eyes. "The
owner of that necklace you hold - where is he?"
The
dying orc smiled and closed his eyes. Was that all she wanted?
"Up there..." With a nod, he indicated up the ridge behind him,
up to the cliff. "He took my warg for a walk."
She
frowned and stood, walked up the rocky hill and looked over the cliff down to
the river. Behind her, she heard Legolas and Gimli call for Aragorn.
