Erestor’s Background/History
In this story I have imagined Erestor’s past as having him being born in the early First Age and that his parents were followers of Fëanor. Both were killed in the kinslayings when Erestor was young and he remained under the care of relatives and family friends who were also Followers of Fëanor. By the time he meets Elrond in Maglor and Maedhros camp, Erestor is of an age to be almost a parental (or young parental) figure for Elrond (and Elros) to help provide them with some comfort, stability and guidance in their turbulent lives. In this story, Erestor had been born into one of the distant lines/families of the Fëanorians (so he might be a distantly related to the seven Fëanorian brothers of the main family). This is the only life he has basically ever known as a child, following Fëanor and his sons on their self-destructive quest for the Silmilril’s and living a nomadic life filled with conflict. Erestor recognizes the fruitlessness of his masters’ task but also knows he jeopardizes his own life and potentially others if he abandons camp, so he continues to stick with the brothers as they progress further into madness, doing his best to advise them towards seeing sense. Then when Elros and Elrond come along, being kidnapped by the two remaining Fëanorian brothers at this point, Erestor realizes he has a true purpose and the potential to restore some right in the world that the Fëanorians have darkened by protecting and guiding these two special young half-elves. From there Erestor has dedicated his life to protecting and working with Elrond and has been at his side as his second everywhere he has gone and in everything he has done since. Because of his background as a Fëanorian Erestor has not always been treated or received well, and that has caused him to be somewhat closed off to others in personal matters and to have a stern demeanor at times, but he always trust’s Elrond to have his best interest at heart.
On his journey throughout his days, Erestor has encountered a variety of elves from a number of backgrounds through a variety of experiences. He’s heard the whispers murmured behind his back. He knows that many disliked him for his Noldor heritage and his childhood and young adult years spent being raised within the camps of Sons of Fëanor. He couldn’t help where he was born and where his parents chose to raise him. It wasn’t his fault his father was a steadfast follower of Fëanor. Yet many still blame him. Some were untrusting of him to this day. The madness of Fëanor and his sons left a far reaching and painful impact on all the elves of Arda, even now in the third age when the line of Fëanor had long since passed. Little do they forget Erestor never would have met Elrond had they not been introduced in those encampments after Maedhros and Maglor abducted the twin peredhil sons of Elwing and Eärendil. Erestor had been there to support and advise Elrond since that moment, as he learned and grew, when he joined court Gail-Galad, and during the times fought his way through wars and conflicts and the evils of Sauron. There may not even be an Imladris standing today without Erestor meeting Elrond in the encampments, as Erestor played a huge role in encouraging Elrond to develop this one time outpost into a major elven realm. It was largely Erestor's hard work and dedication to the task and all the planning and development he did behind the scenes that helped Imladris become what it is today. But many elves, especially those born in more recent ages, just didn’t have the perspective to see all Erestor did for his Lord and the people of this realm, especially in the development of its establishment.
Other elves tended to whisper and gossip about Erestor’s stern countenance and introverted nature in the moments they thought he couldn’t hear them (he could), critiquing him harshly behind his back. There are many powerful elves across Middle Earth that shine far brighter than Erestor. They tended to have bright and vivacious personalities, possessing an ageless beauty always full of sunlight and elven grace. These were elves like Glorfindel, that carry themselves with nobility and confidence, that can seem to make everyone smile and feel safe and that become a hero and bastion of hope for the future. They drew others towards them. Not Erestor. He froze others in their place.
Erestor was not like these light filled elves at all. He was quiet and stern, introverted and introspective. He placed value in intelligence and integrity over fleeting and often deceptive beauty. He could be short tempered much of the time and his speech often cut directly to the heart of matters. He often lacked a strong sense of humor or want to make others laugh, serious in all things he does. Erestor was a very beautiful elf, with his snowy, pale skin, long and graceful hands, and silky black hair that flowed down his back, often pulled back in braids or some other severe style. He was thin but strong and had intensely sculpted and defined features. He possessed an abundance of beauty, but it was a very cold sort of beauty. When Glorfindel walked by or threw a smile in one’s direction, the receiver felt sunshine and warmth and the comfort of all things cheerful and happy and safe in this world. When Erestor glanced one’s way, others were pierced with a glacial breeze and became frozen in their advances, his icy gaze being used to analyze those immobilized before him. His frosty blue eyes pierced through anyone who dared look at him directly. He was also an elf of few words, typically cutting straight to the point rather than wasting his breath with all sorts of flowery language. It’s not to say that Erestor did not have any acquaintances or close friends, just that they tended to be farther and fewer in between than most elves. He wasn’t the easiest to get along with or to get to know. Erestor did not waste time on superficial connections and didn’t care much about how other elves viewed him. He often preferred a good book and fresh cup of tea, sitting by himself on a balcony somewhere, soaking up nature's essence rather than socializing and cavorting around with his fellow elves. Because of his frosty demeanor and standoffish personality, other elves had plenty to say and gossip about whenever Erestor was near.
He had heard it all before, the whispers calling him impersonable, cantankerous and a loner. That was fine by Erestor, he didn’t care much of what others thought of him, but when they tried to change him or interfere and intercede themself within his personal life or tried to soften his demeanor, he became quickly irritated. You would think, because elves are immortal creatures, they would be slow to form relationships and put much thought and examination in choosing who they would select to bond with for eternity. Unfortunately for Erestor, many did not feel that way. Most elves sought out a partner shortly after reaching their majority. If they were not yet married, they were at least flirting, dating, and experiencing connections with other elves or sometimes even mortal men. Erestor had never really been interested in all of that. He was often referred to as an eternal bachelor. People wondered if he didn’t have another half to his fëa like most elves. Even Lord Elrond, who managed to stay uncoupled for so many ages, eventually found his other half. Erestor just never cared to look. Never found himself drawn to coupling and relationships like most elves did after reaching their majority. This is not to say he never took interest in someone or never dated anybody, he just never pushed the matter. He was far too busy focusing on more important things than to dedicate his limited free time to courting and seekino romance. Erestor had been on a few dates in the past, most of the time due to being set up by a friend or acquaintance who felt “pity” for him for not being a part of a pair yet. Most of these outtings tended to be awkward and unsuccessful at progressing. Those that didn’t make it past a first date often lost interest when they discovered how busy and unavailable Erestor truly was in his daily life. He was dedicated to his work and serving his Lord. Most didn’t want a partner who worked all day and night and rarely came home except to grab a change of clothes and a few hours of rest. That was fine by Erestor, he was happy and fulfilled in his life and position. He had friends and an adopted family, and that was enough for him. There were just some people that couldn’t understand his indifference to having a relationship, but Erestor paid them little mind. He might meet someone who he falls head over heels for one day and maybe they will feel the same for him. Until then, Erestor would remain dedicated to his realm and committed to his work and not worry what the future had to hold in regards to his love life.
By this point in his life, most of Erestor’s friends and acquaintances knew he despised being set up for romantic encounters. They were all too often awkward and forced. Elrond and others learned long ago, through experience, that setting Erestor up on a blind date was a fast track way to get on his bad side. Most had tried, some more than once, to encourage Erestor to find a romantic partner and they learned through experience it never turned out well, so most stopped trying. The only one who never did try and push Erestor in this area was Glorfindel, and Erestor was grateful for that for a number of reasons. Despite the majority knowing Erestor’s peculiarities and resistance toward relationships, some still pushed and prodded him, questioned him about his feelings and attempted to arrange matchups.
The last thing Erestor needed or had time for during this disastrous stretch time, especially with all the mishaps occurring left and right, was for someone to try and match him up. Despite that, set him up someone did. A young elleth named Aerin, who was the daughter of Erestor’s third in rank personal assistant, was determined to match Erestor up with an elleth she was close friends with. Despite the fact that Erestor preferred ellon and despite the fact that she was much two young for him at only 820 years of age, his friends and coworkers encouraged him not to reject this date straight away. His assistant pleaded with him to give her a try. Exhausted of hearing his supposed friends pester him into taking the date, he agreed to escort the young lady to the Hall of Fire one evening when he was able to squeeze some availability from his schedule. They could have some drinks and listen to the live music from the house minstrels being led by his dear friend Lindir. It was quiet enough during the breaks for some light conversation. The date was a disaster from the get go. When he arrived at her rooms to escort her to the Hall of Fire, she critiqued his choice of robe as being very “plain” and acted disappointed in the venue for their date. She was far too young and far to female for Erestor’s taste. At less than 1,000 years old she lacked the life experience and maturity to be compatible in conversation with Erestor. She was restless and kept pestering him to dance, despite his repeated refusals. While Erestor loved music, he abhorred dancing, especially in a room packed full of other people and on a dance floor where they would end up stood elbow to elbow with others. Her topics of conversation were boring and lacked substance, as she was very full of herself and self absorbed. When she started prattling on about the benefits of marrying a nobleman and becoming a lady, Erestor cut the date short and returned her swiftly to her rooms with a quick dismissal. There was no hope of a second date. It was a shame he had to leave the Hall so early, he was looking forward to hearing Lindir’s new composition debuting tonight, but he really could not abide that vapid elleth any longer. He knew he shouldn’t have accepted the match from the get go. Now he would have to deal with an upset coworker who would inevitably give Erestor a hard time for ending the date early and dismissing the elleth so abruptly. Oh well, that was a trouble for a later time.
Just before heading back to his rooms, Erestor decided to return to the hall, where he found a seat in the back in a less crowded part of the room and settled in to hear the remainder of Lindir’s composition. To his pleasant surprise, Glorfindel joined him shortly after he returned, and he spent the remainder of the evening in the quiet company of his friend, having a much better time than he had been experiencing earlier. Soon though, all good things must come to an end and Erestor and Glorfindel parted ways for the evening, Glorfindel headed to bed, Erestor headed back to his office to try and work his way through the toll road dispute and associated paperwork that was top priority for the council meeting taking place first thing in the morning.
