Of Raspberries and wine
Harmony and Tinet gathered excitedly around Narninium, asking her questions like what she had been doing on the balcony with Legolas? They decided to go for a walk to the fountain, which shone grandly in the moonlight. Harmony took Narninium’s hand and dipped it in the fountain. The cool water refreshed her skin and glistened like the sun shining on the waters of a lake.
Giggling, Harmony swirled her hands in the clear water and flicked it playfully at the other two. Soon, they were all splashing each other and their laughter resounded around the royal garden.
“So come on and tell us, what has that cheeky brother of mine been up to? We’ve seen you two together, practically the whole night. What’s going on Narninium?” Harmony’s tone was light and teasing, much like her hands. Tinet was nodding in agreement, her eyes shining eagerly as she awaited the answer.
“I don’t know what you are on about. He has been a perfect gentleman, we danced and had a drink, that is all.” She answered quite haughtily. There was still a twinkle in her eyes but her face was straight. Harmony and Tinet looked at each other, raised their eyebrows and then burst out laughing.
“Legolas is well know for his ‘ways’ shall we say, with the ladies,” revealed Tinet.
“Tinet! That is the Prince of Mirkwood you are referring to,” Harmony squealed with delight.
“I think it’s time you two stopped teasing me, I’ve actually been looking for Astaldo most of the night and when he disappeared, I sat with Legolas for a while. I went to get us some wine whilst he searched the palace grounds for Astaldo. That is all, nothing else happened
“Mmm…do I hear disappointment in those last few words?” Harmony smiled at her new friend. She could sense Narninium was not as sure as she made out.
“Well, he is beautiful, there is no doubt about that,” Tinet let out a loud laugh, “but I don’t think he’s interested in me. He only wants for Astaldo and I to be together. I was all for that too… until I heard Legolas mention somet abo about Astaldo being with another she-elf in the gardens.” Her azure eyes clouded as she remembered the name ‘Lavishla.’
“Oh we’re sorry to hear that. I’m sure he would gave been just talking to someone he knows. You are his main interest, aren’t you?” Harmony placed her arm around Narninium’s shoulder reassuringly.
“I did see another person follow after Astaldo, while I was dancing.” Tinet interrupted. “Then later on, Legolas came back from the garden and I tried to coax him to dance, but he declined. He looked really upset.”
“Maybe I should go and talk to Legolas and see what has happened. You two wait here for me.” Harmony turned to leave.
“Astaldo is with him now, so how will you be able to talk to him?” Narninium looked concerned.
“Well, I can ask Astaldo myself if he is there. That will be much better. Don’t worry, I will sort this out for you.” She elegantly picked up her skirts and headed for the balcony.
“I think Legolas is a dream. I wish he would dance with me and look into my eyes the way he did with you.” Tinet mumbled.
“To tell you the truth, Tinet, I’m attracted to both of them.” Seeing Tinet’s surprised look, she continued. “you know I really like Astaldo and he’s on my mind day and night since my first meeting with him, but tonight something did click with Legolas and I but I didn’t want to tell Harmony. Could you not tell her this, please Tinet?”
Tinet glanced at Narninium. “It’s not my place to say anything to anybody. That is your own business.” She cannot have both, that is so unjust, Tinet thought.
“Thank you Tinet, I will not forget this.” They both leaned back against the fountain and waited for Harmony, an uncomfortable silence between them. Narninium began to sing to cheer herself up. Her beautiful voice, once again, astonishing Tinet and everybody that could hear her.

Harmony gracefully ascended the staircase from the garden. As she reached the top, Narninium’s eerie voice could be heard over the party. I want the rest of this night to go well. She discovered the two warriors laughing and drinking as if everything was just fine. Men! They are so insensitive. She blazed in, her skirts swirling about her.
“Such a grand entrance sister. What troubles that lovely face of yours?” Legolas patted the seat beside him as Astaldo jumped to his feet and bowed to her.
“Please sit Astaldo. You do not know what troubles me? What about Narninium? Are either of you aware of the distress you have caused her tonight?” She could sound quite matronly when she was angry. Legolas felt like he was the child instead of her older brother.
“Relax Harmony, Astaldo and I have sorted it all out. We will tell Narninium what is going on in a minute. I think she had trouble keeping up with our heated conversation earlier.” He winked at Astaldo.
“You told her Astaldo was in the gardens with another maiden, and she seems to have the wrong idea…or was she correct in suspecting something between him and this mystery elf?” She glared at Astaldo, waiting for a reply. Astaldo felt uncomfortable under her harsh gaze. He squared his shoulders and not wanting to be rude he smiled at Harmony, even though he knew it was really nothing to do with her. What a party this had turned out to be, he certainly didn’t expect so much to be happening and revolving around him.
“I will speak to her now and explain everything. Where is she?” Astaldo made his way to the stairs, catching Legolas’ eye on the way out. Once again, Legolas winked at him and motioned for him to go.
“Bring her back with you and we shall enjoy the rest of the celebrations as intended.” Legolas downed his goblet of wine, then asked his sister to sit with him.
“You will find her and Tinet near the fountain, but she might not be willing to join you Astaldo.” Harmony warned.
Astaldo raced down the stairs, heading for the garden. In his haste, he tripped over the last step and ungraciously tumbled into someone coming up. Cursing, he looked up, only to find the King staring down at him. King Thanduril offered his hand to pull him up. Embarrassed to be seen so clumsy, not to mention crashing into the King himself, his face went scarlet as he took the hand presented to him.
“My Lord, I’m so sorry for my clumsiness. It was most rude of me. It has been the strangest of nights, so please understand.”
“Has it really?” The King looked highly amused by this statement. “In what way Astaldo?”
“Oh I think your wonderful wine has got to me, that is all...” He felt the King’s eyes boring into his with a slight glint, glowing in the depths. God I’m stupid to lie to him.
“Mmm…as I understand it, you have been seen on the royal balcony, dancing in the gardens, and entertaining all the most beautiful elf maidens here. Seems it would be a wonderful night, if that is anything to go by. Now, why the rush?”
“I was just going to find Narninium, I think she’s near the fountain with Tinet.”
“Oh good, good. I wanted to speak with her myself. How are she and Legolas getting along? I thought they would be dancing more. I’ve hardly seen her out there, does she not feel well?”
“I’m not sure My Lord, I have scarcely seen her all night. We wanted to all have a drink and chat together, that is why I was going to find her” Astaldo desperately wanted to leave now, sensing the King was going to make some changes to their plans.
“Yes…well I would like you to send her to me when you do find her.” He turned and walked briskly up the stairs, his concentration now on Legolas and Harmony.
Astaldo rushed off, more carefully this time and turned left, heading to the center of the garden, where the magnificent fountain looked stunning. He saw Tinet splashing Narninium with the water and sighed with relief. At least he would get to explain himself before they met up with the others.
Tinet spotted him approaching, and nudged Narninium in the side. Looking up and seeing this handsome warrior striding towards her, she wondered how she could not forgive him. She knew she had to be with him. There was something about him that sent her heart racing, all her surroundings ceased to exist. Tinet’s excited whisperings faded into the background as she was drawn to his eyes and his sensuous mouth. Before he could say anything, Narninium rushed towards him, throwing her arms around his wide shoulders and hugging his surprised face. Not caring what Tinet or anyone else thought, she wanted him to know that she needed to be with him. She did not even want to hear his explanation, as she stared into his silvery eyes. As long as he was with her now, that was the most important thing, surely he would feel the same way.
Astaldo stepped back in surprise at her approach to him. He expected some sort of dismissal, not to be hugged in such an open and generous way. Gently he clasped her around the waist and held her back from him. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, he held on to her hands and brought them up to his mouth, kissing the backs of them tenderly.
“Narninium, we need to talk about this.”
“No, I don’t want to hear your explanation. Just let us finally spend some time together. I don’t want to know what you have been doing with someone else; lets just start again. You know…like when we first met.” Her voice began to quaver; she couldn’t bear to think that he might not want to be with her now. Was she too late?
“Well…if you are sure you don’t want me to explain myself, I’m more than willing to start again.” A smile graced his lips. Just as quickly it disappeared. “The King wants to speak with you right now. I think he wants to know how you and Legolas are getting on.”
"Oh no, not him as well!” Her voice raised an octave. Astaldo’s eyebrows shot up. “I mean, Harmony and Tinet asked the same thing.” She glanced back at Tinet, who was amusing herself at the fountain. “I’m beginning to wonder what is going on here.” A frown creased her otherwise flawless face. “Has the King used me? As a prize I mean, for Legolas.” Her worry frown deepened.
“I’m sure the King did not intend to use you in such a way. How could he know who would win the competition?” Astaldo’s mouth tightened at the corners as anger raged inside at the thought of the King using her for his own purpose. Had he delayed the mentioning of the prize for that very reason; so he could see who won first? Was he looking for a wife for Legolas? The thought made him more agitated and quickly he whisked her away from the fountain area and Tinet.
“Come, we need a private place to talk.” They went the opposite way to the balcony, ending up in the far corner of the garden, beneath a group of large beech trees. The leaves rustled in the night breeze, a shiver found its way up his spine. He had to think now. The king would want to know what was taking so long; Legolas would have to entertain her whether he wanted to or not.
“I want you to be with me, not Legolas. I mean, he is my friend and the prince, but I met you first. He wants to be with Lavishla but his father may have other plans. The King likes you a lot, Narninium. Maybe he thought you would make a fine wife for Legolas. Of course you would, but not without a fight from me.” He blushed with his outburst. Normally, he would never oppose the prince, unless it was an archery competition.
“I want to be with you too Astaldo.” Narninium’s eyes shone in the moonlight. The relief escaped her in a huge sigh.
“The way the two of you looked at each other when you were dancing… was very hard for me to watch.” He growled to himself for bringing it up.
“I don’t recall anything like that, I hate dancing, that’s all I know” Her lip trembled as her eyes misted over.
“Okay, forget it...let’s start again. Hi, I’m Astaldo. What is your name and where do you come from?” He instantly raised his arms to eye level and pretended to aim an arrow at her head. Narninium’s face broke into the happiest smile he had ever seen.
She said, her Westie speech touching his senses exactly the way it had that day he had met her in the forest. His face was in raptures, as her fairy-like laugh wound around his ears, causing them to ring.
Astaldo couldn’t believe it; Narninium really was okay with him and not mad about Lavishla. Well, if she was, she wasn’t showing it. Now, reluctantly, he knew he had to take her to the King. This was his duty, when in reality, all he wanted to do was take her further into the gardens and forget about everyone else.
“You know, I’m glad you came here to search for your sister; it saddens me to think I might never have met you. Never have the pleasure of hearing your exquisite voice, or looking into those stunning eyes, that would have been a tragedy.” He spoke slowly and carefully so she would understand him. “So thinking upon that, I must now take you to the King and his son, and hopefully Legolas will tell his father that his interest is sadly not with you.” He cupped Narninium’s chin in his strong fingers, and bending down, placed a sweet, tender kiss upon her lips. When he opened his eyes, he looked directly into azure orbs that had become tearful.
“What’s wrong?” He embraced her gently, fearing he may have been mistaken and presumed too much.
“Oh…it’s Thalia. You have reminded me of my purpose here, I was sure she would turn up tonight, but I have not even been looking for her. All my thoughts have been with you and Legolas. Still it has been worth it.” She smiled back up at him, her head leaning in for another kiss from her silver-eyed warrior. Relieved that he provided her with what she was seeking; but this time he deepened the kiss, making her gasp with delight.
“The King awaits us, we must not give him cause for anger.” Astaldo held her face in his hands, staring with wonder at the beauty before him.
“Yes, you’re right. We have been gone far too long.” The moonlight caught the gleam in his eyes, making them shine brighter and sending little goose bumps down her neck.
Smoothing her hair down and tucking a tendril, which had come loose, behind her ear, she strode out of the trees towards the palace. Spying Tinet now holding a bowl of raspberries and a goblet of wine, teasing a fine-looking elf by dropping the berries one by one in her mouth, and swirling them around with the wine, as he eagerly watched. Winking, Narninium took the bowl from the surprised maid and skipped towards the stairs. Sensing this was his moment; the elf quickly plucked a berry from Tinet’s hand and plopped it in the wine. Tinet smiled as she licked her lips, tempting him to share the goblet, much to his delight.
