6. Aragorn
The
battle of the soldiers of Rohan against the wargs and their orc riders was
over. Most of the enemy had been killed and the survivors driven off.
Legolas
walked the battleground looking for Aragorn, the only one of his friends he
hadn't yet found; he had seen Orenin also searching the grounds and Gimli was
finishing off downed orcs and wargs. 'He doesn't like to see even them
suffer' he thought and continued his survey of the area. He saw no sign
of Aragorn but did not want to admit what his heart was telling him - if he
couldn't see Aragorn, calling for him wouldn't help. But, in the end, he
had to try.
"Aragorn!"
he shouted.
Gimli
shouted then too. "Aragorn?"
She
heard the dying orc laugh at hearing them call out for Aragorn and turned back
from the cliff overlooking the river to watch Gimli approach the downed orc and
lift his axe. "Tell me what happened and I will ease your
passing."
Legolas
had been walking up to where the Countess stood but turned back to go down to
the orc on the ground.
"He's
dead," the orc said triumphantly, then coughing through the blood in his
throat. "He took a little tumble off the cliff."
Legolas
knelt and seized the orc by his armour. "You lie."
The
Countess turned back to the river as King Theoden came up to join her at the
edge of the cliff; he also looked over the edge of the cliff, down at the river,
looking for some sign of Aragorn. "No," the Countess said to
Theoden. "Not him. Not this way."
Legolas
and Gimli joined them, looking down to the river, all of them looking for some
sign, both hoping and dreading to see something of their friend. But
there was nothing to be seen, except for the river flowing below them.
The Countess again said “No,” then turned and walked back down to
the field.
The King
turned to Gamling, with the death of Hama
now the head of the Theoden's men. "Get the wounded on horses.
The wolves of Isengard will return. Leave the dead."
Legolas
glared at him but Theoden, knowing that look was not truly for him, just put
his hand on Legolas's shoulder and said "Come," and then left the elf
and the dwarf looking down at the river.
Gimli
waited for a moment, then sighed heavily. "What now, my
friend? You will take your Lady and go back to Mirkwood?"
"Yes,"
said Legolas, still staring down at the river. "I must give warning,
prepare the defenses against what is to come.
"I
will accompany you so far, if I may, and then to my own home to raise the alarm
there..."
"No,
we're going to Helm's Deep," interrupted the Countess, coming up behind
them leading Arod and Medusand. "Let's go. They're
leaving. He'll look for us
there." She looked at their puzzled faces. "Aragorn is
not dead," she said firmly. "He'll be there. Legolas,
let's go!"
And
with that, Legolas mounted Arod and the Countess helped Gimli up behind him
before jumping onto Medusand.
"I
wish I had your Lady's faith," Gimli told Legolas in a low voice.
They
followed Theoden to the great fortress. After
their arrival at Helm's Deep, Gimli, after being assisted by the Countess off
Arod, went to tell Princess Eowyn, who had run out to meet them, about the loss
of Aragorn. He'd noticed her tender looks at Aragorn.
Eowyn
was shocked and hurt at the news but, not forgetting her duties, threw herself
into organizing and preparing for what was coming and did not neglect to find
rooms for them.
The
third night passed in avoiding thoughts of their loss. Gimli, desperate
for something to take his mind off of Aragorn, took the Evenstar necklace from
Legolas and then went to find the castle's forge.
Legolas
climbed the high tower
of Helm's Deep and looked
out over the valley before setting himself to repairing and making arrows.
The
Countess, after taking a few hours for rest, changed into the simple brown
dress Eowyn had found for her. After
checking on Gimli, she began the long climb up the high tower's staircase to
the balcony where Legolas worked and watched. He was seated on the floor,
working on his arrows. She went to him, dropped the bundle of
arrowheads Gimli had given her to bring to him and handed him Aragorn's
necklace. "Gimli is amazing," she said. "I can't
find the break."
Legolas
looked at the necklace carefully, then set it aside and resumed his work.
"He is amazing. For a dwarf." He looked up and saw her
looking out over the valley. "What do you see, Orenin?”
"I
see Theoden's people, still coming in. Fewer now. They'll be able
to close the gate soon. I see the mountains, the plain, the
river..." she trailed off. No Aragorn.
"Now,
in Sindar," he said.
She
laughed and turned to him, a wide smile on her face, shrugged and turned back
to her search.
"Orenin,"
he sighed. "Even Gimli has learned..." He frowned and
said "The Time Lords' gift has made you lazy, Love."
She
turned and walked over to him and said "Amin mela le, Legolas
nin." She caressed his face. "That is all the Elvish I
need to know." She tilted his face up to her and kissed his mouth
and then went back to look out over the valley.
Legolas
considered her for a moment, then went back to his arrows. A few minutes
later, he gave a small gasp.
She
turned back to him. "Legolas?"
"I
was clumsy" he said, looking at his hand. He turned it to her to
show her the wound in his hand, the blood coming down his palm.
She
swallowed heavily and took a step, meaning to run back down the stairs, away
from his danger but every step she took brought her closer to him.
He
used his unhurt hand to sweep his work off his lap and she settled down on him,
straddling him. He held his hand up to her and she put her mouth to the
wound. He felt her tongue on him and closed his eyes in bliss.
'Careless.
Wake up.' Legolas frowned. No, not yet; he wanted to sleep.
Orenin's weight was on him, her head was on his shoulder and his arm was around
her. He wanted to stay like this forever.
'Thoughtless.
Wake up!' He opened his eyes, then gasped at what he saw. The sun
was up and its light would be on them soon. "Orenin, wake up!"
he said.
She
opened her eyes with a smile for him, then remembering, closed her eyes in
shame. "I'm so sorry, Legolas," she whispered.
"Please forgive me."
"There
is nothing to forgive, Love. See?" He held up his hand.
"The wound has closed already." She wore only a thin dress and
his heart tightened at her vulnerability. "Please, Love, you must go
inside."
"I'm
sorry, Love," she said again, but then did get up from him and ran to the
door and down the stairs.
He
stood, stretched and went to look out over the valley. Still no sign of
Aragorn. He then went to sit down and resume his work.
A
few hours later, Legolas raised his head and smiled as he heard Gimli puffing
his way up the stairs, then, realizing it would be a while before the dwarf
made it to the top, went back to his work.
Eventually,
after many stops, Gimli appeared at the top of the stairs. He dropped the
batch of arrowheads he'd made for Legolas and put his hands on his knees.
"Oh!" he gasped. After catching his breath for a few moments,
he straightened up and looked over at Legolas, who was standing, looking out
over the valley, absently flexing his hand.
Gimli
took a deep breath and announced "I'm not doing this again. You can
come down to get these..." and stopped.
Legolas's
attitude had suddenly changed. His eyes opened wide. "She was
right, Gimli," he said with a laugh. "She was right!" He ran past Gimli down the stairs, clapping
him on his shoulder as he passed him.
"Oh.
That's good," looking down the stairway he'd just come up. 'But
he'll go tell his Lady first,' thought Gimli. "Well, laddie,"
he said to himself, "if you hurry, you'll meet him first" and then,
taking another deep breath, he started down the stairs.
