6. Gandalf
Pippin
had reached the ground safely after lighting the beacon and he had
returned to their rooms, proud of succeeding at the task entrusted to him by
Gandalf, only to wish he'd stayed up on the Beacon's tower. The Countess
had been so angry at Gandalf. All that shouting! And on his account! Gandalf had finally
stalked out of the room.
Pippin
looked up at the Countess with a frown.
“Why do you do that?” he asked her. Pippin had been forced to do his own shouting at the Countess. She had no right to shout. There was little enough he could do but he
needed to do his part. “Only
babies need to have everything done for them!”
“What
did you say?” studying him, almost as though she'd never seen him before.
“I
said only babies need to have everything done for them,” he said. “We have to do what we can, for
ourselves.”
She frowned to
herself. "Is that why?” she asked quietly.
“Perhaps I have done him an injustice." She paused.
"Perhaps I've done them all an injustice."
“The
battle in Osgiliath isn't going well,” the Countess said to Gandalf and
Pippin as they looked over at the city across the fields of the Pelennor. "They're being overrun." Inevitable, she supposed, as more forces were
coming out of Mordor into Osgiliath.
Gandalf
had returned from his walk but he’d been very quiet and she felt guilty
over her anger with him. He'd seemed to come out of his dark mood after
the beacon had been lit by Pippin but his satisfaction at that had not lasted
long and he had again sunk into dispiritedness.
She had tried to apologize to him but he had told her it was unnecessary
– and that made her feel even more uneasy for him.
The
defenders were fleeing Osgiliath. The
people of the City were watching the men, some on foot, most on horseback,
fleeing for the safety of Minas Tirith.
But they would never make the crossing of the Field of the Pelennor back to the City; they were being chased.
The
flying dragons she’d seen over over the City
were now pursuing and harrying the fleeing men.
“Gandalf!” she exclaimed.
“Those dragons! The men are never going to make it back to
the City.”
She
turned to him and saw with alarm that Gandalf was shaking, though in fear or
fury she couldn't tell. "I cannot just watch this slaughter,"
he said in a low voice and turned to leave.
Fear
and guilt rising in her, she went past him and turned to stand between the
Wizard and the door. "What are you going to do, Gandalf?"
"As
you said," he said, “what I can!”
"No,
Gandalf," she said, laying a hand on his sleeve, quickly withdrawing it,
taking a step back and raising her hands at his look of fury. "Gandalf!" Her eyes widened.
"Whatever you're planning, stop! Think! This is not advice and
guidance! What you contemplate is wrong
and you know it."
"Then
stay in the Shadows and do nothing!" he shouted. He turned and was
almost out of the room before she dared call after him.
"Gandalf!"
she said, stopping him at the door but he didn’t turn to face her.
"Because a thing can be done does not mean that it should be done,"
she said softly.
He
exhaled sharply but said nothing and left the room.
Pippin
started to follow him. "Pippin, no.
Don’t," she said.
“He’s making a mistake.”
He
looked back at her, shook his head at her and ran after Gandalf.
She
left the room to follow them, pulling her hood up over her head, but Gandalf
and Pippin had already disappeared. She joined the people running to the
walls; they exclaimed in joy as they saw Shadowfax,
galloping fast on a lower level, on its way out of the City, carrying Gandalf
and Pippin. The people around her gave her a lot of space, she noticed
with a smile, which faded as she looked over the Field and watched the men
fleeing Osgiliath, the three great dragons decimating their number. She heard the people around her shout
"It's the White Rider!"
Gandalf and Pippin on Shadowfax
were riding out to the men fleeing to the City. “Oh, no, Gandalf,” she whispered,
feeling sick with guilt.
Gandalf
raised his staff and she closed her eyes against that light she knew was
coming. The people around her began cheering and laughing. She didn't need to see; she knew exactly what
was happening. They didn't know what this would cost them.
And
she was afraid to guess what it was going to cost Gandalf.
Denethor had dressed Faramir down, furious at the loss of
the Ring, furious at the loss of Osgiliath, furious that Gandalf had had to
rescue his fleeing army from the orcs.
But he was cleverer than them all.
If he didn’t have the Ring to use as his weapon, he could at least
put the Wizard to use as his weapon.
“Owww!” Pippin
shouted. “That hurts!”
“I’m
sorry Pippin; I’m trying to be careful.” Pippin had changed into the uniform of Gondor
and the Countess was using a comb on his unruly hair, helping to make him
presentable for the ceremony he was about to undergo.
“I
wish you could just take it off my head, OWWW, comb it out and put it back on
when you were done.”
“There,
I’m done,” she said.
“Now let me look at you.
You look…” She cocked
her head to one side, considering him.
Actually, he looked much the same as when she’d started. “You look very impressive.” She smiled at him.
“I
hope I remember my lines,” he nervously and walked toward the door. He was almost out of the room when he turned
back to her. “Aren’t you
coming with me?”
“No,
Pippin,” she smiled. “I
think it’s best if Gandalf and I stay out of Denethor’s
line of sight for a while.”
Faramir
had told them that Denethor had ordered Osgiliath retaken. Gandalf had been heartbroken at the
news. “Denethor
thinks to use me,” he said to the Countess in a low voice. “What have I done?” And indeed, many men of Gondor, hope rising
in their hearts after they’d seen Gandalf chase the Nazgul
off, had volunteered to go fight to retake Osgiliath.
And
to their credit, none of the volunteers backed out when it became known that
Gandalf would not be accompanying them to Osgiliath.
Gandalf
could not dissuade Faramir from leading the men who had volunteered to go fight
against the force that had overtaken Osgiliath.
The
people in the street now were silent, no cheers this time as they watched the
soldiers leave Minas Tirith. After the
Gate had been closed behind the soldiers, they lined the Walls to see what
they could of the battle.
The
Countess knew that Pippin was in the great throne room attending Denethor but she hadn't seen Gandalf for some time.
She paced up and down the room watching the men ride to Osgiliath but was unable
to stay there; she didn’t want to watch that slaughter. Ignoring the mocking voice in her head
– ‘haven’t you done enough already?’- she left the room.
She had to find Gandalf.
She
searched the City and finally found Gandalf sitting alone in an alley.
She left the light of the street to walk into the shadow of the alley to stand
by the Wizard.
"I
can still hear their deaths," he said softly. "Men who should
have been here to defend Minas Tirith against the coming attack, their lives
wasted because of my pride and despair." He looked up at her.
"You were right, Lady, and I was wrong. And I am sorry."
She
could only feel embarrassment that this being should feel the need to apologize
to her. She shrugged. “We
don't have time for this, Gandalf. Denethor
must be challenged and these people need you, your advice and
guidance." She paused and smiled at him. "Unless you
think they'll listen to me..."
"No
Lady." He laughed then, a short laugh, but it encouraged her –
it was still a laugh. "No, I don't suppose they would."
He sighed and raised his arm to her. "Help an old fool up and we'll
go see what Sauron has prepared for us."
She
helped him to his feet and they began the long walk up the levels of Minas
Tirith.
