Chapter six: Parting gifts
For the remainder of the time the two were inseparable and spent every waking moment lavishing kisses and affection upon each other. No one was left with any doubts whether the two were together.
It was a conscious choice for the both of them even though the two elves had yet to discuss what this meant for them and where it left them when the Fellowship had to move out again.
Haldir knew he couldn't accompany his Prince, Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel needed him -the best of the Marchwardens- to protect the borders of Lothlorien.
His presence here couldn't be missed, not for the sake of a new affair.
He hadn't found the courage to speak of this, he didn't want to see the sadness fill those beautiful eyes.
The Fellowship was to leave within a few hours now. Most of them were busy packing, preparing for the journey.
Not Legolas.
Legolas wandered along the forest path with Haldir and shyly asked, "Why won't you come with us...?"
It was the question Haldir had dreaded. He didn't want to deny Legolas anything, but he'd have to, he couldn't fail his Lord and Lady now.
Haldir drew the Mirkwood elf into his arms, "I want nothing more than to be able to come with you, but I am needed here. Nothing goes on in these woods without my knowing it, I've always been the one to ensure the safety of our realm. With the Ring passing through here... They'll need me. The Ring guides the creatures of Mordor and they will pass through here -or at least try to- in search of it. I cannot let the knowledge I wasn't here when they needed me weigh upon my conscience."
Legolas offered a light nod, but Haldir didn't miss the way Legolas' eyes darted away from him.
Haldir touched Legolas' hand then, "Lirimaer, we may not be together, but my heart is with you. There won't be a moment when you are not in my thoughts and that I won't utter prayers to the Valar to ensure your safety and return to me"
Legolas offered a light smile at that, but a tear slipped down his cheek nonetheless, "I will miss you Haldir, amin mela lle."
Haldir smiled in turn, kissing him softly on the lips, "I love you too, my prince, more than you'll ever realize."
Their embrace was endless and heartfelt, before Haldir took his hand and led Legolas along to one of the many talans in the tree tops, "I want you to be here for this"
The prince's brows furrowed in confusion as Haldir offered the elf a small pouch filled with coin and related words and letters, symbols.
Legolas watched on as Haldir stripped off his shirt and the other elf -whom he learned was called Ruvaen- took out some type of paint and a sharp object and began hand-pricking the skin to insert the ink.
The process was long and painful, but Haldir barely made a sound beyond an occasional gasp.
Legolas watched without blinking as bit by bit the letters appeared over Haldir's heart until Ruvaen stopped and drew back to reveal.... his name.
Legolas stared at the testimony and inched closer, allowing his fingers to trail along the dark letters upon the elf's light skin, "What is this?"
Haldir smiled, "This... this is forever. It's a human sort of art that Ruvaen has studied and made his own. It's called a tattoo. It's a permanent body decoration."
There was a moment of silence before the Mirkwood elf spoke again, "My name....Haldir... What if I... What if this quest..."
Haldir shook his head, "Whatever comes to pass, to me, or to you, my love for you is eternal. Nothing could ever change that."
The words seemed to ease the golden-haired elf who seemed bashful now in the light of the situation, "Do you think... I could..."
The Marchwarden smiled, but shook his head, "This is not something to be done lightly. As you know my feelings for you have been present for so long... In my heart I stand by this decision. You must not pursue it unless you are certain it is what you want"
Legolas nodded his understanding, but found his eyes drawn to some strange small rings, "What are these?"
Ruvaen was the one to step forward, "They're piercings. They go through various parts of the body, for decoration."
Legolas blinked, "Like the ears?"
He'd seen mortal women bear them, though they had seemed larger, "Possibly, but those you're looking at are more suitable for the nipples, or... other places of sensitive nature"
The prince stared at them for a moment longer, before he looked at Haldir, "I want those. They'd be ours."
The silver-haired elf couldn't even think to disagree.
Ruvaen grinned, "They're a nice extra touch, make you extra sensitive there."
Moments passed and a quiet whimper had left the elf from Mirkwood before Haldir gasped at the sight of the small hoops now decorating the prince's nipples.
Both of them received clues how to take care of their new decorations, before they went on their way.
All too soon it was time for the Fellowship to leave the shelter of Lothlorien and continue their quest.
A quest that the Lady Galadriel knew held great darkness for all of those involved. All of them would know pain and suffering, but none more than the sweet prince who'd captured the heart of her most cherished Marchwarden.
She hadn't spoken of that knowledge, that prospect. It was better for Haldir to be unaware of it.
The mirror revealed many things; things that were, things that are and things that have not yet come to pass, various options bound to happen if one strayed but a little from the chosen path of life.
It might not come to pass.
Those thoughts were the ones she kept to herself for that reason alone; there was no reason to worry about what might come to pass if there was no certainty it would.
The threat of Mordor was too great, she couldn't risk her Marchwarden being absent in his duties, distracted by his thoughts.
She needed him with a clear head and proper focus.
The Mirkwood Prince had to fight his own battles, Haldir couldn't be present for them.
Haldir watched with a pained heart as he watched Legolas drift away in the boat, "May the Valar keep you safe, lirimaer, my heart shall not survive it if you don't"
