Between all the disruptions and distractions, thus far making Erestor far more stressed and overworked than he should be, none had stung Erestor quite so deeply as this next incident did. Erestor was always aware of the whispers behind his back about how he is different and darker than most elves. He is used to people making fun of his cold appearance, lack of love life and work-aholic tendencies, however, he had never truly been the butt end of anyone’s cruel joke before. Sure the peredhil twins (often egged on by Glorfindel’s mischievous guidance) have played their pranks on him before and will certainly pull more in the future, but they were never done with cruel intentions to utterly humiliate and make a mockery of Erestor like this incident was designed to. It was a busy afternoon day for Erestor and his office staff. Today was the day when all the monthly military reports, training outlines and guard/security rotations were due for review, filing and approval through either Elrond or more often than not, Erestor. Usually Glorfindel will retrieve this paperwork first thing in the morning and drop it off to Erestor by mid-morning for review. Today, however, Glorfindel was away, having been called to investigate a security breach at the northern border. He would not be returning until at the earliest, sometime after lunch. All his assistants were busy with other errands, so Erestor decided to fetch them himself, before the morning training exercises started in full swing and all the offices were locked up with the commanders out in the field for the day. He exited the Homely House and ventured quickly through the breezeway in the brisk late autumn air and headed downhill to the main barracks.
The paperwork should all be waiting for Erestor in the office that Glorfindel shared with the assistant general Huríon. As he approached the General’s office door, he heard his name being mentioned within the murmurs of discussion taking place. Erestor was not usually one to snoop, however for some reason he had a sinking feeling in his gut that this was not a conversation that he wanted to interrupt in the middle of. Pausing in the empty hallway, before the doorway where the current occupants could not see him, Erestor silently listened in on the conversation that for some reason seemed to be about him. What he heard stunned and shocked him. Inside, General Huríon and one of the lower commanders were discussing how beautiful but frigid Erestor was. They were questioning whether had ever even kissed another elf before and then bragging that they bet they could break through his frigid exterior, that is if they cared enough to even try. The longer the conversation carried on, the more vulgar it became. Eventually it came down to the two high ranking officers contemplating gambling and taking bets, making a pool to see who could convince the Chief Counselor to come as their date to the Lover’s Festival. The bet would be paid out after the festival dinner and then Erestor’s “date” would be free to continue on with the festivities with their actual date or partner and Erestor would end up abandoned in the midst of the activities, punishment for his frigid ways. It was supposed to teach Erestor a “lesson” about being so haughty and cold toward others all the time. Apparently the commander had somewhat of a vendetta against Erestor after inviting Erestor to the Ethuil Festival last spring, to which Erestor had declined. Erestor honestly was taken aback and hurt that two high ranking officers of The Imaldrian Guard would behave this reprehensibly. While part of Erestor wanted to confront the two officers, another part decided to just walk away. Surely other officers or members of the guard would not sink so low as to join in on this asinine wager. Maybe they would even give the two a chewing out that they well deserved. Erestor was too tired and too busy to have a big confrontation and also, they would probably accuse him of snooping and spying on private conversations, an argument he did not want to get caught up in. Erestor knew Elrond would never believe the accusations, however, he simply didn’t want to deal with a big to-do or more gossip about himself and whispers behind his back if he were to confront them. Turning from the doorway, Erestor swiftly and silently exited the barracks. He would send one of his runners down later to collect the papers. He no longer felt bad about interrupting Huríon’s training groups to make him go fetch the papers anymore.
Certainly this situation was hurtful, Erestor would not lie to himself and pretend everything was a-okay. But what could he do? Never since he was a wee elfling did he let someone’s words hurt him or break down his sense of pride and he wouldn’t allow them to now. He was the Chief Advisor, responsible for the functioning of the realm. He was used to adversity and difficult situations. Forbearance was one of his greatest strengths. Having lived over 4,500 years, Erestor had endured through war and madness at the hands of the Fëanorions. He watched his own family participate in the kinslaying of Haven elves in the first age, just before he first met Elrond. He watched his ada fall at the same kinslaying, at the hand of an elf simply trying to defend his family from the madness of the chaos brought on by Maglor and Maehdros. He’s witnessed orcs rip an elf clean in half and chew on their lifeless bodies like they were some kind of afternoon snack. He had participated in The Great Alliance and battled against Sauron, and watched on as his great king, Erenion Gil-Galad, was eviscerated in front of his very eyes, nothing he could do about it. He has stood by Elrond every step of the way to build Imladris up, stone by stone, to the glory that it was today. Erestor is all too familiar with adversity and life throwing chaos, disruption and deceit his way. He would simply move forward from this abhorrent incident and simply forget about the elves that were crude enough to wager with his feelings. He would focus his time and energy on something worthwhile and productive, at least that is what he intended to do initially. Put it all out of his mind, until he realized these elve’s mean-spiritedness had spread and infected the one ellon he never would have believed would engage in their bullying and antics.
