Chapter 7
Calla awoke to Haldir's tongue circling her nipple. Looking down at the silver haired Elf, she smirked, thinking she'd need to have a little talk with him about just helping himself without asking.
"Haldir, exactly what is this?"
"Mmm " he murmured into the soft flesh of her breast, "breakfast."
He took that moment to suckle fully on her nipple, causing her to moan and arch her back. Her hand ran through his hair, reveling in the silky strands, when she noticed he was already dressed.
"I thought we needed to leave early this morning, Haldishe she reminded him.
Sighing, he lifted his head to look at her. "Alas, although I truly wish to linger a while longer, you are right. Daylight is wasting, and we have many miles to cover today."
"Do I have time to at least wash up a little?"
"Of course, but do not dally we need to leave as soon as possible."
Calla rose from the pallet and made her way to the wash stand. Haldir sat on the edge of pallet, watching her complete her morning rituals, pleased that she no longer felt the need to tell him to turn his back while she got dressed. She did, however, ask for a little privacy when using the chamber pot.
Dressed once again in the gauzy pale blue gown and slippers, she ran a brush through her tangled mop, wishing there had been enough water and time to wash her hair. She sighed, running her hands through the unmanageable curls.
"What's wrong?" Haldir asked, "You look disturbed."
"I was just thinking how much I would like a real bath, that's all. My hair needs washing badly. If I go more than a day or so without washing it, it gets all poofy, like it is now."
"You look as beautiful as always," he replied, meaning it. He rose from the pallet and walked over to her, helping her to lace up the back of her dress. "I like the taking off part much better than the lacing up part," he whispered, taking the lobe of her ear in his mouth.
"Good grief, Haldir! Is that all you ever think about? You're a great big horny toad, that's what you are."
"A toad? That is not true toads are ugly and slimy - I am neither."
"Make that an arrogant horny toad," Calla amended, laughing and swatting his arm.
He picked up the bag of books and led her outside of the Great Cavern. She looked up at him, a small frown on her brow. "Haldir, you really don't need to carry me
I can walk, at least until the slippers give out, okay?"
"I do not need to carry you, although I will miss being able to thump your backside when you misbehave," he teased, smiling at her. "King Thranduil did not wish you to have to walk, and so has graciously provided transportation for us."
"Horses! Haldir, I don't know how to ride a horse! I'll fall off I know I will," she cried, her eyes widening at the two horses standing nearby.
"You don't need to know how to ride - you will ride with me on my horse," Haldir explained, motioning toward a lovely chestnut horse standing near an impressive white stallion in the field before the cavern.
"If I'm going to ride on your horse with you, then why do we need two horses?" she asked, confused. Her question was answered when a familiar tall Elf walked to the white horse and mounted.
"Legolas will be accompanying us for a couple of days. He travels to Imaldris," Haldir explained, nodding at his friend.
Legolas smiled down at the two of them from his perch on the white stallion, waving as they approached.
"Imaldris," Calla repeated, "Oh, wow "
"And what do you know of Imaldris?" Haldir asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
"Only that it is also called Rivendell, and The Last Homely House, and that Elrond is Lord there, and that he has twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir, and that his daughter, Arwen chose the mortal life to marry Aragorn, also known as Estel, Strider, and Ellessar, the King of Gondor," she answered breathlessly, "and that it was in Rivendell that the Fellowship of the Ring was formed, and I believe Glorfindel lives there also, and Erestor, and that it's supposed to be very beautiful "
"Hah! Imaldris cannot begin to match the beauty of where we are going!" he interrupted, pride for his home in the Golden Wood swelling his chest.
Legolas laughed from atop his mount, "Haldir would never admit that anywhere could be as beautiful as the Golden Wood. To him, I think even Valinor would pale in comparison!"
Haldir sniffed and gave his friend a condescending look. "Why would I admit something that was not true? There is no place as beautiful as Caras Galadhon."
Transferring the books from the Hefty bag into saddlebags, Haldir took hold of Calla's waist and effortlessly lifted her to the back of the horse.
"Don't we need saddles, or something?" she asked, looking for something to hold onto besides the poor horse's ears. "Where are the handles?"
"No no saddles. You don't need to worry about holding on to anything - I will be holding on to you." In one fluid motion, Haldir jumped and sat astride the horse behind Calla. She felt his strong arm snake around her waist, pulling her tightly to his chest. Reins in his other hand, he nodded at Legolas, and the horses broke into a canter.
Moving at a leisurely pace, side by side, Haldir struck up a conversation. "Tell me, Calla, when you were recounting your, er vast knowledge of Imaldris, did I hear you mention something about Arwen what did you call it oh, yes, 'choosing the mortal life' to marry Aragorn?"
Legolas blurted out a laugh, but tried to cover it quickly by coughing. "Choosing the mortal life? Where would you get such a notion, Calla?"
"From Tolkien where else? He wrote that Arwen had to choose the mortal life so that she would be able to marry Aragorn and stay in Arda after the other Elves left for Valinor."
"Let me ask you something Calla could you choose 'The Elven Life' if you wanted to?"
"Of course not why?"
"Then what makes you think we can choose to become anything other than what we are simply by saying we chose it?" Haldir countered, while Legolas nodded in agreement.
"Well because you have magic, I suppose," she replied, unable to come up with a better answer.
"We do have magic Calla, magic for healing, for example, but to change what we are would be a miracle, not magic!" Legolas contributed.
"So Tolkien got that wrong, too?"
"From what I remember Tolkien had a real problem with interspecies marriages although it happens quite often here," Haldir explained, thinking about the man who had visited them so many years before. "I would hazard that he came up with that whole 'choosing the mortal life' idea to avoid the fact that an Elf was marrying a Human."
"Well, that's pretty racist I'm really beginning to wonder exactly what it true and what isn't," Calla pondered, absently petting the horse on the neck as they rode. "What about the Half Elven, like Lord Elrond? Don't they need to choose whether to be counted among Men or Elves?"
"No, of course not. They are simply what they are the most they do is choose whether to spend their time among mortals or the Eldar some choose to go back and forth."
They rode for several more hours, before Haldir called a halt. Turning to Legolas, he winked, saying "We will soon be leaving Mirkwood's borders, and I think it better if we spend the night still within them. I believe there is a pleasant enough place nearby, is there not, Legolas?"
Catching on immediately, the Prince agreed, "Yes, I know the perfect spot to spend the night safely. Come, it is only a short ride from here."
A short while later, much to Calla's relief, Haldir and Legolas reined the horses to a halt near a place which had the look of having been used often as a campsite. The remnants of an old campfire was in the center of a small clearing, and a lean-to of logs was set to one side.
As much as Calla's sore butt wished to get off the horse, when Haldir reached to lift her down, she hesitated, asking, "What about the spiders?"
"Spiders?" Legolas repeated, looking confused. "What spiders? We haven't had a problem with spiders in over a hundred years!"
"Really? Then I guess that threat about leaving me for the spiders' lunch was just you talking out of your ass again, eh, Haldir?" Calla said, frowning at the tall Lorien Elf.
Legolas exploded into laughter both at the turn of the phrase Calla used, as well as the notion that Haldir had used the threat of spiders to keep her in line.
Haldir just grinned at Calla sheepishly, lifting her down from their mount. "You will forgive me in a moment, I am sure " he smiled, "I have a surprise for you."
"Hmmf," Calla sniffed, "It had better be a pretty good surprise I'm really annoyed with you right now, Haldir!"
"Come with me, and you will see," he said, pausing to take a small packet from the saddlebag, and then leading her by the hand into the forest. Legolas stayed behind to begin unpacking, settling the campsite, and tending to the horses. Calla saw the small smile on his face, and realized that whatever the surprise was, Legolas was in on it.
They walked for several minutes, until they reached another small clearing. There before them was a small pond, fed by water trickling down over rocks. Steam rose from the pond into the cooling afternoon air.
Calla looked up at Haldir with wide eyes and a smile. "A hot spring?"
"You said you wished for a real bath. We have them in Lorien, too, but I didn't want you to have to wait until then. I did not want to wait until then, either," He grinned, happy that his surprise seemed to please her.
Unable to think of anything to say to his thoughtfulness, Calla threw her arms around his neck and hugged him. He presented her with the small bag he had carried from the campsite.
Inside the bag were several small vials. Fingering them, Calla looked questioningly up at Haldir.
"For your hair. They will help cleanse it. Wet your hair, rub the liquid from the vials in it, then rinse it out," he instructed. Picking up a small sliver of ivory, he continued, "this is soap, for everywhere else."
"Soap and shampoo!" she cried, delighted. "Aren't you staying?" she asked, suddenly concerned as he began to walk back the way they had come.
"I need to go back and help Legolas with the campsite. I will come back later to bathe. Do not worry, you will be safe here."
Mere moments later, Calla had stripped and edged her way into the hot waters, reveling in the feeling of the soap and shampoo on her skin and hair. Both smelled vaguely of lavender, and she was feeling completely relaxed, nearly floating in the warm water, when she heard a noise from the trees near the pool.
Through the brush burst the ugliest creature she had ever seen. Snorting and snuffling, the thing looked to be a cross between a wolf and a boar. It also looked very dangerous, and very hungry. Spying Calla in the small pool, it began to stalk her, its front end low to the ground, saliva dripping from its tusks.
The scream rose from Calla's chest and split the evening's quiet. Backpedaling to the further side of the pool, she tried to get as far from what she only assume to be a warg, as possible.
The creature got as far as putting one paw in the water before it fell over on its side, several arrows piercing its scruffy hide.
Legolas and Haldir both appeared from the trees behind it. Haldir ran to Calla to make sure she was safe, while Legolas kicked at the warg, to make sure it was dead.
Gathering her in his arms, he lifted her from the pool and carried her onto the bank, sitting down on the ground with her, trying to comfort her.
Calla knew she was alright, hadn't been harmed in the slightest, but still couldn't stop shaking. The warg had driven home the fact that this was a wild place there were dangers here, real dangers, not just some fairytale writings in a book. She buried her face in Haldir's chest, she murmured, "That thing could have killed me. It would have killed me if you hadn't killed it first."
"I would not let harm come to you, little one. I will never let harm come to you." Haldir rocked her in his arms, laying his cheek on the top of her head.
Legolas trotted over and sat close to them, his hand reaching out to touch Calla's. "I too, would not let anything harm you," he said earnestly. He gently stroked her cheek, wiping away the tears that she hadn't been aware she'd shed. She managed a small smile, but made no attempt to move away.
They remained that way until the sun began to dip below the horizon. Legolas ran back to the campsite, and returned with a torch. Sticking the torch into the ground, he began to strinteintent on bathing before retiring for the night.
Haldir looked at Calla, and whispered that he, too, would like a bath, but wouldn't leave her if she did not wish him too.
Smiling at last, Calla kissed him on the cheek, and said, "Well, now that I've been sitting in the dirt for an hour or so, I guess I could use another bath anyway. I'll just come in with you." She stood up, and waited for Haldir to shed his clothes before stepping into the pool with him and Legolas.
