“That was all I saw of the shadowed figure before the darkness claimed me in its cold grip.” Mira spoke softly.
“What happened after that or do you know?” asked Elrohir, looking at her as she picked up her goblet once more.
Mira shook her head. “I didn’t know anything till the next morning to find myself under the sky and covered up in a blanket.”
Her body cried out in agony at her attempt to sit up. She couldn’t help but to cry out a soft whimper of pain. She immediately felt a man’s hand on her arm and back. Fearfully, she looked up to see the same raven haired man who she had spoken with in the street of Gondor.
“Be not afraid no more. You are safe now.” he whispered gently.
“How can I be safe…when my father is still alive to hunt me down?” Mira asked, fearfully.
“He will not know where you are…Mira.” the man spoke.
“Who are you?” Mira asked, looking up at him.
“I am Faramir, the second son of the Steward of Gondor…at your service.” He said with a smile. “I’m taking you away from Gondor to the only safe place I know of – Rivendell to Lord Elrond. I’ll ask him for sanctuary for you. He will keep you safe and protected for the rest of your life, Mira.”
“Will he? My father has ways of finding and bringing me back to him! He is better off dead then alive to hunt me down!” Mira spat at him in anger.
“Unfortunately, he might never come out of the dungeons of my father’s castle ever again,” Faramir stated calmly.
“What do you mean? He would find a way,” said Mira. She froze as she turned towards where the city of Gondor was in. “Someone’s coming!”
Faramir stood up and withdrew his sword which made his men who were nearby do the same. The rider came closer as Faramir realized there was nothing to be alarmed about as he walked towards the approaching rider sheathing his sword as he went.
“Faramir, your father demands….”
Faramir growled off something and turned away from the rider to return to Mira’s side. He knelt next to her. “My father always has to bother me. I’m going to take you to Rivendell now, Mira. Can you manage to sit behind me?”
“I’ll try my best, Faramir.” Mira said as he helped her to stand up.
“I’m sorry Faramir, but your father demands you to be home now not in three to four days to take her to wherever she’s to be,”
“I must say no. He can rant and rave all he wants but she needs to get to where I need to take her,” said Faramir, as he stood up and helped Mira to rise.
“I must object, my lord. He wants you back in Gondor now. Riders, separate them!” commanded the rider, looking at the men.
Faramir’s sword was out and aimed at his own men. “Let me take her to where I can get her to safety! My father will understand!”
“Faramir please, let me go on my own. I have a huge head start on the hunters. I can get there,” Mira said, as she placed her hand on his sword arm.
“Are you sure?” he turned to look at her.
“Yes, you have given me the chance to live now in freedom with Lord Elrond. I’m sure he’ll keep me protected.”
“All right but take with you this pouch. Within it is a scroll, which you must give to Lord Elrond; he will give you sanctuary with his people till the day you pass away, Mira.” He handed her a pouch which she opened to look at the scroll to see the seal of the Steward of Gondor on it.
“Goodbye, Faramir. If you can come see me in Rivendell,” spoke Mira, looking at him as he climbed up onto his horse.
“I shall come as soon as I am able to, Mira. Good luck. We’ll stay here till you are out of our sight.” Faramir said, as he looked at her.
“Thank you, Faramir,” Mira then turned and started to do a quick walk towards the mountains where Rivendell was located at, not knowing if she would get there before the hunters found her. She didn’t let him know that she had begun to get a slight fever and if he knew that he would never allowed her to leave to go to Rivendell on her own.
“Did he know you were ill, Mira?” Estel asked.
Mira shook her head. “No, he never knew. I really didn’t know how bad it was till I reached the river and I knew I was too hot for I was already stumbling along the riverbank trying to find an easy place to cross when I knew I had to cross where I did….”
Mira dredged through the river to get to the other side of the bank when she felt herself loosing consciousness and grabbed the pouch off her hip and flung it onto the dry bank, just as darkness claimed her she saw a blond haired elf appear from the woods with his bow out and an arrow in the string.
“You saw me?!” exclaimed Legolas, shocked that she had seen him before she passed out.
“Yes, I didn’t know if I was going to be dead or not. At that moment, I didn’t care to fight the darkness that was trying to claim me in its hold,” Mira said, as she looked at Legolas. “The next thing, I know is that I’m here in Elrond’s home, healthy again.”
Elrond turned towards Legolas. “Legolas, continue Mira’s story since you were the first to see her.”
“I had separated from Elladan and Estel…I mean Aragorn…while we hunted for fresh meat. I had heard a lot of splashing in the river and was not the normal kind of splashing one would hear here. I went with my bow and arrow armed….” spoke Legolas.
Legolas crept through the low lying bushes towards the river when he saw a brown haired figure flinging a pouch off of their body as they collapsed onto the side of the river. He rushed into full view of the form just in time to see the person go completely unconscious. He rushed forward dropping his bow to the ground and catching the person before they struck the rocks. He placed him or her onto his lap before he felt for a pulse. When he found he or she was alive; he placed his fingers to his lips and blew a loud piercing whistle and after hearing a replying whistle but not the other whistler who he had also whistled for – he made the whistle even more imperative that they get there now.
“Elladan, help me with her.” Legolas had stated as he looked up to see the black haired son of Elrond appear from the woods with his bow out and armed.
“Where’s Estel?” Elladan asked, as he helped Legolas lift up the form till they got her or him onto dryer grounds.
“He should be here soon. We’ll need the horses.” spoke Legolas, as he heard the sounds of someone crashing through the brush. “He’s coming.”
A few moments later, their other member of their party showed up with an arrow in his bow. Estel came rushing towards them as he put his arrow back in his quiver and placed his bow onto his back. He picked up the young elf off the ground and had passed her over to him. After he got onto his mount, Elladan had cried out about her ears being not elven ears.
“We must have had pushed our horses to run as fast as the wind to get Mira here as fast as we did. We didn’t know if she would live or die before we got here,” said Legolas, as he looked at Elladan and then to Mira.
Elrond revealed a smile. “You did manage to get her here at the proper time, Legolas for if you had tarried for a moment longer, she might have died.”
Arwen spoke up as they all revealed the shock on their faces at truly how ill she was, “Mira was very, very ill. It took a lot of healing to get her back to us.”
After Arwen had spoken; the room went quite still as the sounds of the night was heard. But then the light sound of a boot walking on the floor was heard and the swish of riding clothing was also heard. They turned towards the door leading from the entrance of the hall to see an elf standing there with a 6 ft tall raven haired young man.
“Faramir!” cried Mira, as she stood up from her seat and rushed to the Man’s side and was immediately hugged by the Man.
“Mira, I was worried about you! The elves I encountered on my way here told me a hunter came and tried to take you from here.” He spoke, as he gazed at her and then towards Elrond who was walking towards them.
“A hunter tried but got killed by Elladan, Lord Elrond’s son. They won’t let anything bad happen to me, Faramir.” Mira spoke, as she wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned her head on his chest.
He stroked her hair and smiled. “That I am glad, Mira. Mira, I must speak with Lord Elrond about why I am here. Can I see you in the morning when I am more wakened?”
“Of course, Faramir,” Mira said with a smile, knowing the Man who saved her from more abuse was there and knowing she would see him again soon brightened her smile as she kissed his cheek and hurried away from him and Elrond.
“What did you wish to speak with me about, Faramir?” Elrond looked at him calmly as he watched Mira vanish from the room via the balcony.
“It concerns Mira’s father. He will not be able to be held in our dungeons without Mira’s testifying against him in front of my father about his abuse of her.” Faramir said, quietly. “Since I saw his abuse of her with my own eyes and that he tried to also kill me, my testimony is only of one incident and his attack on my person.”
“He tried to kill you?” Elrond stated shocked.
“Yes, after I entered the house to stop him from hitting her any more he lunged at me with a dagger in hand. I stabbed him but not fatally, which I had full authority to do. I knew I had only one thing that I could do for her was to get her out of Gondor and fast. I checked her for any serious wounds which I found none but for her being unconscious, I picked her up and carried her out of the house to my mount where my men helped me to get her onto my horse. But I ordered two of my men to haul her father to the dungeons and not released till I said so. I need to have her return to Gondor with me soon,” said Faramir.
“No, I shall not allow her to leave Rivendell to confront him! He has his death sentence on his head by trying to kill you. She will not leave Rivendell. Ever!” snapped Elrond. He turned on his heel and walked away from Faramir in a huff.
Faramir went after the Lord of Rivendell and grabbed his arm stopping him from moving. “Please hear me out, my lord?!”
Elrond looked at his hand on his arm and glared at him. “Speak fast before I really lose my temper.”
“May we venture where we will not be overheard by Mira?” asked Faramir.
“This way,” Elrond said, as he headed in a different direction of the balcony.
On the balcony, Mira stood gazing towards the river below when she heard the light footsteps of someone approaching. She turned her head to see the lavender dress of Arwen coming towards her. Mira smiled as Arwen neared her.
“You like Faramir, don’t you, Mira?”
“He’s the first person who I ever got to listen to me about the abuse that I got at my father’s hands beyond you and your family, Arwen, even the jeweler and his wife didn’t believe me but they saw the bruises on my body…so in a way they must have known but turned a blind eye to it.” Mira said, as she looked at her.
“I truly am sorry, Mira. I wished we had known about your plight sooner.” Arwen whispered quietly, as she gazed over the valley.
“I too wished your family knew about it sooner. I had my hopes dashed several times in the past. I thought I was finally free of my father…but only to be dragged back to him. I just hope that I do not have to return to him. I fear for my life, Arwen, if I return to his home,” whispered Mira.
“I too, fear that day.”
“Arwen, I want you to have something.”
“What is it?” asked Arwen. Then, she saw the Evenstar necklace in Mira’s hand. “Oh, Mira, I couldn’t! I couldn’t take it. You made it with your own hands.”
“Please take it, Arwen. Please?” begged Mira, as she looked at Arwen.
“All right, but I shall not accept it as a gift I will pay you the proper amount for the necklace, Mira.” spoke Arwen, as she pulled out a small pouch by her side and withdrew about forty gold coins from the pouch and handed it to Mira.
Mira placed the coins in her pouch which she then, wrapped the necklace around Arwen’s neck and stepped back. “By the Elbereth (Star-Queen), the necklace looks perfect on your neck, Arwen. It was like as if I had created the Evenstar just for you.”
“It is strange, you never saw me before and yet you created a necklace that fit me perfectly. My people call me Evenstar, the very….”
“Same name of which I had named the necklace that now is around your neck.”
Arwen and she just stood there bathed in the moon’s light, before they heard couple of voices coming closer. It was Estel and Elladan walking towards them smiling.
Elladan spoke, “Father is acting strange now.”
“What do you mean, Elladan?” asked Arwen.
“He just threw both of us out of his private room. He was talking in a heated voice with Faramir. They’re arguing about something and I think it is about...mummph.”
Estel’s hand had muffled Elladan’s words therefore silencing him. “Hush, brother, before you end up making a fool of yourself to the lady who you are attracted to by ending up sticking your foot in your mouth.”
Mira spoke, as she removed Estel’s hand from Elladan’s mouth. “I know why they are arguing and it does deal with me. My father is going to be released soon and my life here is over as I must flee this place to find another place of sanctuary and hope that the hunters do not find me.”
“Mira, we will not…..” spoke Estel.
“I’ll be in my room, getting my things together to leave in the morning.” Mira said, gently as she walked away from them.
“Mira! Please stop!” cried Elladan. He realized that Mira was not stopping. He turned towards Estel and glared angrily before he quickly followed Mira.
“Good going, Aragorn, you chased Mira off. I was just about to suggest us to leave so they could be together here alone…if you get my meaning.” Arwen stated, calmly.
“You mean…those two are in love?”
“Yes, Aragorn, they are but they do not know it. I think they feel something but it’s there just waiting to come out.”
“How do you know that they are in love, Arwen?”
“Did you not notice how he held her when we told her about her mother and how she silenced him from speaking anymore?”
“I did but now that you made me think about it, I think you are correct about it. Maybe we should tell Elrond about this and that Mira wants to go to another place of sanctuary.” Estel said, as he walked towards the hallways which lead them to Elrond’s private chambers.
“I will not allow her to go there! I will protect her as long as I can! There is no way I would even allow her to leave Rivendell to return to Gondor! There is no one who I would trust in that city beyond the true King of Gondor....”
Arwen and Estel listened to Elrond rant at Faramir; then they heard Elrond’s little mistake but then Faramir’s question about who the true King is. Aragorn smiled knowing that he was the one who Elrond was talking about.
“I’m the one who Elrond is speaking about, Faramir. I am the true King of Gondor. But I do not want to accept it as I like being free of that status it would bring on me.” Aragorn said, as he entered the room.
“What are your ties to the Kingship of Gondor?” asked Faramir, hand firmly on his sword’s hilt.
“I am Isildur’s heir. I can trace my linage back to Isildur himself. My father is Arathorn and my mother Gilraen. It is in the books here. The shards of Isildur’s sword Narsil is here in another room where it remains broken. But why I was hidden was for my own safety for Sauron is searching for any living heirs to Isildur incase we may still have the One Ring, which we do not…if I had it that ring would be deep in Mount Doom and destroyed.”
While Aragorn spoke, Faramir gazed at him and then let his hand go from his sword. When Aragorn paused for breath, Faramir held his hand up.
“I need not anymore of the history lesson, my lord. The reason of keeping you secret is safe with me as I do hope that Mira will remain here in safety.” Faramir stated calmly.
“That’s why we’re here. She’s packing to leave Rivendell in the morning.” Arwen retorted quickly. She then explained what had happened on the balcony.
Faramir started to run from the room but Arwen prevented him from leaving. “Faramir, wait. My older brother Elladan is with her right now talking to her.”
“I have to tell her that she must stay here for her own good!” yelled Faramir, rushing from the room with them following him.
