7. The Doors of Moria
“The
walls of Moria,” announced Gimli to the other travelers, awe in his voice.
Legolas
had dropped back to the end of the group to walk with Orenin. He could sense a growing unease in her. “Are you all right?” he asked softly. He knew she was hungry but that was not what
was troubling her.
“I’m
a little tired,” she said, the small smile for him not concealing the tension
in her eyes. It was more than simple
fatigue though; she definitely didn’t like the feel of this place. She was reminded of places she had been,
abnormal places, places of strange angles.
And her feeling of unease grew with every step she took.
The
Company walked along to the strip of dry land between the cliff and the
lake. “Dwarf doors are invisible when
closed,” said Gimli, striking the stone wall with his ax.
Gandalf
replied “Yes, Gimli. Their own masters
cannot find them if their secrets are forgotten.”
“Why
doesn’t that surprise me?” Legolas said to Orenin, just loud enough for the
dwarf to hear.
Gandalf
stopped at a place at the wall, between two tall trees. “Isildine. It mirrors only starlight. And moonlight.” He looked up at the sky; the moon, formerly
hidden by cloud, showed its face and they could see the carving on the door of
the mine. Gandalf raised his staff to indicate the elvish writing. “It reads ‘The Doors of Durin, Lord of
Moria. Speak, friend, and enter.’”
“What
do you suppose that means?” asked Merry.
“Oh,
it’s quite simple. If you are a friend,
you speak the password and the doors will open.” He turned to the door and said “Gate of the
Elves, open now for us.”
They
waited. Nothing. The Countess sighed and, not for the first
time in her travels, wished she carried a Federation phaser or two.
Gandalf
tried again. “Doorway of the Dwarf-folk,
listen to the word of my tongue.”
“Nothing’s
happening,” said Pippin, looking up at Legolas.
Gandalf
pushed against the huge doors in frustration.
“I once knew every spell in all the tongues of elves, men and orcs.”
“What
are you going to do then?” asked the unfortunate Pippin.
“Knock
your head against these doors, Peregrin Took,” Gandalf shouted, “and if that
does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions,
I will try to find the opening words.”
And
try he did. For a while, the group
waited and watched him expectantly but after some time had passed without any
success, their attention turned away.
Aragorn removed the packs from Bill’s back and then the reins and sent
the pony away. Legolas stood under one of the trees; Orenin paced up and down,
close to him but always watching the water.
Legolas
felt Orenin’s unease growing. The water
was calm but he knew she sensed something there. While he could sense her unease, he did not
share it; further, he noticed that besides Orenin, only the men seemed uneasy
in this place. While Gandalf spoke to the
doors, Frodo watched him; he was the only one still attending to Gandalf’s
efforts. Gimli sat smoking, lost in his
thoughts. But Boromir too watched the
water. And when Merry, well and truly
bored, threw a couple of stones into the water, Aragorn stopped Pippin from
doing the same, telling them “Do not disturb the water.”
“Oh,
it’s useless” said Gandalf, turning away from the doors and throwing his staff
down. He sat down next to Frodo.
Boromir
had gotten up, and, not taking his eyes from the water, walked over to
Aragorn. The previously still water had
started moving with a swish and a bubble and now all were watching the water,
save Frodo and Gandalf, who still studied the doors of the mine.
Suddenly
Frodo stood. “It’s a riddle” he
said. “’Speak Friend and enter.’ What’s the elvish word for friend?”
“Mellon”
said Gandalf.
And
the doors opened. Everyone got up and
moved quickly to enter the mine, Aragorn the last into the mine, giving a last
glance at the water now behind them.
“Soon
Master Elf”, said Gimli, “you will enjoy the fabled hospitality of the
dwarves. Roaring fires, malt beer, red
meat off the bone.”
Relieved
to be away from the water, the Countess smiled over at Legolas as he rolled his
eyes at her. ‘Though’ she thought, ‘they
will be able to feed me.’ Then she
stopped. What she smelled was not
life. Light came from Gandalf’s staff,
illuminating the cave. Not life in this
place; quite the contrary.
Still
oblivious to what the others were seeing, Gimli continued. “This, my friend, is the home of my cousin,
Balin. And they call it a mine. A mine!”
Gandalf’s
light revealed what the Countess had sensed.
Desiccated bodies were scattered on the ground, surrounding them as far
as Gandalf’s light illuminated.
Boromir
said, dread in his voice “This is no mine.
It’s a tomb.”
Everyone
stared about them at their surroundings, confirming for themselves the truth in
Boromir’s words.
“No!”
cried Gimli, finally truly seeing what was around them. “Nooooo!”
Legolas
bent down and pulled an arrow out of one of the bodies. “Goblins!” he said, throwing it down. He stood and drew an arrow to his bow.
The
men drew their swords and the Countess her light saber.
“We
make for the gap of Rohan” announced Boromir, who had had enough of bad
decisions. “We should never have come
here. Now get out of here. Get out!”
Heeding
Boromir’s shout, the hobbits had begun to back out of the mine while the others
looked to Gandalf to see what he would say to that when they heard Sam shout
for Strider. Aragorn turned and ran
toward the cave’s entrance and the others followed him when they saw the
hobbits bending to help Frodo who was lying on the ground. Sam had drawn his blade and he was hacking at
something that held Frodo in its grip.
The Countess followed Legolas out to the entrance of the mine; he was
already putting arrows into the beast. The other hobbits were thrown aside and
Frodo had been taken up by the beast by the time the Boromir, Aragorn and the
Countess were out of the cave and into the water, weapons drawn.
They
slashed at the tentacles of the Thing in the water; Aragorn severed the
tentacle holding Frodo, dropping Frodo into Boromir’s arms. Upon seeing Frodo freed from the creature,
Gandalf shouted “into the Mines!”
Boromir
shouted “Legolas, into the cave!”
Legolas, after putting a last arrow into the eye of the loathsome Thing,
helped the other hobbits up and into the cave.
Everyone ran back into the horror of the mine hall as fast as they could
to escape the horror behind them.
The
beast slid greasily out of the water after them, its many coiling arms seizing
at the stone doors to pull itself up out of the water. The walls and ceiling, weakened by the
creature, came down, blocking the doors from the creature but burying the
entrance in a great fall of stone and putting them into total darkness.
“We
now have but one choice,” came Gandalf’s voice in the dark. His staff came alight again. “We must face the long dark of Moria. Be on your guard. There are older and fouler things than orcs
in the deep places of the world.”
Leading them up the stairs, past the scattered remains, he said “Quietly
now. It’s a four day journey to the
other side. Let us hope that our
presence may go unnoticed.”
