Preparations
Legolas
watched Aragorn, followed by Gimli, come up the stairs to the Keep. He
placed himself in Aragorn's path but the clearly preoccupied and troubled man
was almost upon him before he stopped his stride. "Le abdollen," Legolas said, hoping to lighten Aragorn's
mood. Not getting the reaction he sought, he spoke again. "You
look terrible," and that did bring the reaction he sought.
Aragorn
laughed at their old joke and then put his hand on Legolas's shoulder.
"Your Lady?" he asked.
"She
is dressing and is anxious to see you." Legolas smiled.
"She is the only one who had faith that we would be able to return this to
you." He held out the repaired necklace with the Evenstar
on it and handed it to Aragorn.
Aragorn
looked down at it and then up at Legolas. "Hannon le" he said
softly. "Now, I must speak to the King."
Gimli
and Legolas followed Aragorn in to see the King and all listened with growing
dismay as Aragorn told Theoden of the army of Uruk Hai
on the march to Helm’s Deep, ten thousand strong in number, and that they
would be at the fortress by nightfall.
King
Theoden ordered not only his solders but “every man and strong
lad” readied for the coming battle. The women and small children
were to be sent to safety in the caves in the mountain behind the
fortress. Theoden then bustled around the Keep, shouting orders, trying
to give his men strength.
The
Countess was waiting for them when they came back inside the fortress and the
four Companions finally walked together again, Aragorn explaining Theoden's
plan to her, her listening to him, pleased to see him again.
"Aragorn,
you must rest," Legolas said, concern for his friend on his face.
"You are no use to us half alive."
They
heard a shout. "My Lord! Aragorn!" Princess Eowyn ran up to Aragorn.
"I'm to be sent with the women into the caves."
"That
is an honorable charge," he told her.
"To mind the children! To find food and bedding
when the men return! What renown is there in that?" she asked
contemptuously.
"My
Lady," he said, "a time may come for valor without renown. Who
then will your people look to in the last defense?"
"Let
me stand at your side" she asked urgently.
"It
is not in my power to command it," he said gently and turned away from her
to rejoin the others.
"You
do not command the others to stay!" She looked at his friends, the
Countess most closely, before turning her gaze back to him. "They
fight beside you because they would not be parted from you," her voice
breaking. "Because they love you."
Aragorn
looked at her but said nothing; there was nothing he could say.
Eowyn
stopped then, realizing then that there was nothing he would do and
embarrassed that she had said too much. "I'm sorry," she
whispered and walked past them to join the others going to the caves.
They
made their way to the armory where they watched the conscripted men and boys
receive the weapons they would be expected to use in the coming battle.
The Countess sighed. Of all the hopeless...most of these 'fighters'
obviously did not even know how to hold the weapons given to them, let alone
what to do with them.
"Farmers,
farriers, stableboys"
said Aragorn. "These are no soldiers," he said, shaking his
head.
"Most
have seen too many winters," said Gimli.
"Or
too few," said Legolas. "Look at them," he
continued. "They're frightened. You can see it in their
eyes."
At
this, all in the room turned to look at them.
"And they should be," Legolas said. "Three
hundred? Against ten thousand?"
Surprised
and concerned for Legolas, the Countess took a step toward him.
"Legolas..." she said softly.
Earlier, she had overheard Legolas lightly suggest to Aragorn that this
was not their fight and perhaps they should go back to Lothlorien
or Mirkwood; he hadn't pressed it as Aragorn told him that Gandalf had told him
of the importance of the defense of Helm's Deep. But she knew Legolas did
not want to lose his friend again.
Aragorn
tried to reassure his friend. "They have more hope of defending
themselves here than at Edoras."
"Aragorn. They cannot win this fight. They
are all going to die!"
Aragorn,
not wanting to go over this argument again, lost his temper. He said
"Then I shall die as one of them!" and stalked
off.
Legolas
made as if to follow but Gimli held his arm. "Let him go, lad. Let him
be."
Legolas,
the Countess and Gimli were making themselves ready, no one speaking, each lost
in their own thoughts when Gamling walked in.
"King Theoden wished me to offer these to you; he thought you might be
able to make use of them," and placed the things he carried onto the
table. "Choose from these and may they serve you well."
The
Countess looked at the things on the table; those things would protect them
from the Uruk army of ten thousand? She gave a short laugh and walked out
of the room.
Legolas,
truly touched at the gesture and feeling the need to atone for his earlier
words, went to the table and looked through what Gamling
had brought.
Gamling turned from watching the Countess leave and said to
Legolas "My Lord, shouldn't your Lady be sent to the safety of the
caves?"
Gimli
gave a great snort but then said "YES! You should tell
her!" He came around the table. "Wait! I'm
coming with you. I want to watch
this."
Legolas,
trying to conceal his smile, said "Gimli!" He turned to Gamling and put his hand over his heart.
"This is a time of great trouble for you; my thanks to you for your
concern for my Lady but she will fight with me." He picked a pauldron from the pile on the table. "And my
thanks for this. I shall be honored to wear it." He picked up
the chain mail shirt - "As Gimli will be honored to wear this" - and
handed it to Gimli, who gave him a sharp look but took the mailed
shirt. Gamling nodded to them and left,
passing the Countess who was coming back into the room.
Gimli had
gone to go look for Aragorn while the Countess helped Legolas re-dress his
outfit to accommodate the pauldron; they looked up as
the dwarf returned. "He's coming," Gimli said. They watched as Aragorn came into the room
and dressed himself for battle, taking a mailed shirt
from the pile on the table. No one spoke. When Aragorn was almost
done, Legolas stepped forward, picked up Aragorn’s sword and handed it to
him.
"We
have trusted you this far,” he told Aragorn. “You have not
led us astray. Forgive me. I was wrong to despair."
"There
is nothing to forgive, Legolas." As they smiled and clapped one
another on the shoulder, Gimli stepped forward, struggling with the chain mail
shirt Legolas had handed him earlier.
"If
we had time, I'd get this adjusted." He dropped it down after
struggling it get it over his head and it fell to the floor; not made for a
dwarf, it proved a little long for him. He looked up at them
defensively. "It's a little tight across the chest." And all were smiling, everything fine again.
Just
then, a horn sounded.
"That
is no orc horn," said Legolas and he ran up the stairs and out of the
room, followed by Aragorn.
Gimli
turned to the Countess and said "Well?! Don't just stand
there. Get me out of this blasted thing!"
