7. The Attack on The
City Begins
Gandalf
and the Countess had reached the top level of the City and stood at the Wall.
The Countess paced up and down the Wall, never straying too far from
Gandalf, and they watched as the armies of the orcs came out of Mordor through Osgiliath,
their drums keeping time, slowly but inexorably bringing their siege towers and
catapults to the City.
The
people of Minas Tirith lined the walls on all levels of the City, ordinary life
put aside now as they watched the approach of the regiments of orcs. The
orc armies covered the Field of the Pelennor, but for
now they had stopped out of range of the arrows of the City’s
defenders.
Specifically
thinking of Pippin, the Countess had asked Gandalf about the possibility of
sending those who could not fight into the safety of Mount Mindolluin,
the Mountain behind the City. But Gandalf had told her there would be no
escape for those in Minas Tirith as there might have been for the people of
Helm's Deep. It would be victory or death for all in the City.
There
had been a final opening and closing of the Great Gate; the people in the
streets stood in silent fear as they watched as the guards carried a litter up
the levels of the city. Finally, as the soldiers came out at the top
level of the city, the Countess saw that it was Faramir on the
stretcher.
Denethor,
Pippin and the other servants of Denethor came out of
the Palace throne room and down the stairs. Denethor had put chain mail
on, his only preparation for the coming battle, but his reaction to Faramir's return made the Countess doubt he would be
prepared for any kind of fight.
"Faramir! Say not that he is fallen"
and Denethor knelt by the stretcher bearing his son.
"They
were outnumbered" said the Captain of the City Guard. "None
survived."
Her
attention was drawn from Denethor’s grief back
down to the Field. The catapults had been fired and she could hear the
cries of horror that came from the lower levels.
Denethor
rose from beside Faramir. "My sons are spent," he said, coming
over to Gandalf. "My line has ended."
Pippin
had gone to Faramir's side and examined him.
"He's alive," she heard him say.
"The
House of Stewards has failed," continued Denethor.
"He
needs medicine, my Lord," shouted Pippin.
"My
line has ended," shouted Denethor, walking
toward the Countess and Gandalf. She couldn't understand him. Was
his despair was so great he couldn’t see?
"My
Lord…" Pippin tried again.
Denethor
looked out over the Pelennor and finally saw, really
saw what was gathered outside the City. "Rohan has deserted
us," he said, fearfully, sounding like a man on the edge.
The
catapults were fired again, this time with stone projectiles and to a different
effect. Walls were broken and they could hear screaming now; the attack
had truly begun.
Shaking
in his fury, Denethor said "Theoden has betrayed me."
She didn’t
like this unstable mood swing and looked over at Gandalf, incomprehension was
on her face. He was also watching Denethor closely.
Denethor hadn't wanted the beacons lit, had not wished for Theoden to
come she thought. Was his despair turned to madness? Gandalf had to act now, she thought.
The
answer to her question came quickly as Denethor shouted "Abandon your
posts! Flee! Flee for your lives!" He turned to
face them - and got Gandalf's staff in his face.
Gandalf
hit Denethor again in the stomach and then the back and when Denethor was down,
Gandalf shouted to the soldiers - "Prepare for battle!"
Shadowfax
came across the field to him. He carried
Gandalf through the streets as Gandalf shouted orders to the men of
Gondor.
The
Countess would not bother to find Medusand. She could get around the City
faster on her own.
Riding
Shadowfax down the levels of the City, Gandalf shouted for the men
to return to their posts. And they obeyed him.
She
arrived on the second level as Gandalf rode to stand with the line of Gondorian solders on the lower wall. "Send these
foul beasts into the abyss!"
They
released the trebuchets and fired back at the orcs. Gandalf
dismounted Shadowfax, who would now never be far from him; the Wizard
paced up and down the walls, watching intently as their projectiles could
not help but find their mark as they landed in the midst of the massed army of
orcs below them.
She
heard high pitched shrieks and looked up; the Nazgul on their dragons had
arrived to join the battle, the creatures in black shrieking to dishearten and
bring fear, guiding their dragons into breaking the trebuchets and lifting men
off their stations to drop them into the City streets, or worse, to the field
in the midst of the orcs.
And
through all of this, huge trolls were pushing the siege towers closer and
closer to the walls of the City.
The
men fired their arrows at the approaching towers, only stopping when Gandalf
shouted "Not at the towers! Aim for the trolls! Kill the
trolls! Bring them down!"
But
it was too late; the towers were already at the Wall; the defenders had only
managed to destroy a few of the siege towers and the others were now at the
wall, orcs running out of the towers to fight all along the Wall. The drawbridges of the towers nearest to
Gandalf and the Countess came down and orcs rushed out of them onto the
Wall.
The
Countess started fighting orcs then, only stopping when her attention was
caught by Gandalf shouting at Pippin, who had arrived after running down from
the uppermost level. She fought her way over to them but by the time
she’d made her way there, they were safe for the moment.
"Guard
of the Citadel, indeed.” Gandalf
told Pippin. “Now back. Up the hill.
Quickly. Quick!"
Pippin obeyed him,
turning to go up to the Citadel.
Relieved that Pippin was safe for the moment, she turned back to the
fight.
The
Countess was over the great Gate of Minas Tirith with a group of archers; she
had picked up a bow dropped by a fallen soldier and was firing arrows into the
orcs outside the Gate; they were using a battering ram on the Gate to break it
down but without success. She found it extremely satisfying to watch as
the pile of orc bodies increased before the Gate.
But
soon, the orcs pulled back out of range of their arrows.
She
looked up and saw what the orcs were now bringing up to the Gate. She’d been through sieges before, both inside,
aiding in defense, and outside, aiding in the attack, and knew what was
coming. She called
“Gandalf!” and he came over to her and together they looked out
over the field.
Trolls were
helping huge animals to haul up a great iron wolf’s head, filled with
fire and the air was filled with rhythmic shouts of "Grond! Grond!"
