Chapter 7: Good night
Elladan should’ve realized the question was coming. He had anticipated it the moment he’d set the plan in motion but now as Legolas asked he just didn’t know how he should respond.
There were many things that could be said, most of them would be true; no Elf should live as a slave if they didn’t want to, he deserved better, he should get a chance in life.
I’m in love with you.
That was the answer that was the most right for him to give, but he knew he couldn’t.
It was too much, too intense. It wouldn’t do, “I just thought you deserved more than what you were getting…You were like a shade of an Elf, not truly present, not really here. Just going through the motions of life”
The prince halted his steps, and Elladan felt awful, “Apologies… I didn’t mean to upset”
Legolas looked at the Half-Elf next to him, “You are but truthful… I’m not so much upset” Despite the tears rolling down his cheek, “It’s just… no one has ever noticed… No one has ever cared about it”
Elladan gave a light nod, “But I did”
The Wood Elf inclined his head, “Hannon le.”
A light smile came to the Half-Elf’s lips, one Legolas found very becoming, before Elladan spoke, “There’s no need to thank me… I could’ve acted no different than I have.”
Legolas didn’t question what it meant, for to question it meant to hope for something and that he couldn’t allow.
No good ever came of hope. Not for him.
The two walked along, the dark-haired Elf taking his sweet time to show the most general places to the prince until the sun set and Legolas asked permission –not necessary, but habitual- to retire for the night.
Elladan walked him to his talan, tension building as anticipation grew but he willed it away as Legolas wished him a good night and disappeared from sight just like that.
Well damn.
He was just on his way down the stairs when he heard Legolas cry out. Faster than he knew he could run he rushed into the talan expecting to find the worst when he found Legolas clutching a beautiful longbow while reading a note that said, “My gift for you, Legolas, is a bow of the Galadhrim, worthy of the skill of our woodland kin. I look forward to helping you hone your talent. ~Haldir.”
Legolas smiled –something he didn’t often do- as he showed Elladan the bow, “Look at this, isn’t it the most beautiful bow you’ve ever seen?”
The dark-haired Elf nodded, “A proper bow for a prince”
There was another smile, smaller than before but still present, “I thank you, Elladan, if it weren’t for your choice… My life would never have taken such a turn.”
Elladan inclined his head, but when Legolas suggested he ought to go thank Haldir for the bow he shook it instead, “He is currently occupied, at this hour he always reports to my Grandfather. Thank him tomorrow, rest today”
Though the prince nodded, it wasn’t entirely convincing.
Elladan left then, his feet carrying him fast to Haldir’s chosen talan. He didn’t bother knocking, much to the Marchwarden’s surprise, “Lord Elladan…”
Though Elladan nodded in what might be accepted as ‘greeting’ the look in his eyes betrayed negative intent, “What do you think you’re doing?”
Haldir’s brow rose, “I was… getting ready for some much needed rest, actually”
A soft growl left the Half-Elf, “You know that’s not the subject of my questioning. Why get him such a bow? Why fill his mind with flattery? What is your plan?”
The proud Marchwarden rose from the bed, standing before Elladan and looking down at the Half-Elf, “He deserved the bow for none of my recruits have ever been so accurate at archery, not even I myself could manage with such swift precision. He earned that through his own skill and talent alone. As far as flattery goes, you will not hear me deny I find him quite attractive. Now that he’s no longer forced into a life of slavery, I intent to perhaps make that attraction known to him”
Legolas’ brow furrowed as he listened in on the conversation. He hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but somehow it happened and now he couldn’t make himself walk away from it.
Haldir found him attractive?
Elladan all but snarled at him, “Do not think me a fool, did my Grandfather demand this of you? He did. Didn’t he? You leave him alone, do you understand? You leave him be.”
Hidden by the door Legolas couldn’t see the smirk on Haldir’s face that suggested Elladan’s words were true.
Lord Celeborn had been clear, win the golden-haired Elf’s affection, keep him away from his Grandson… Haldir didn’t like the scheming so much, but to say he would mind binding to such a beauty would be a lie.
Elladan stormed out of the talan, not even noticing Legolas as he sat crouched down before the window.
Legolas sat down in defeat, hugging his legs to himself. Elladan was right, Haldir couldn’t possibly want a slut like him, a whore, a good-for-nothing Elf. No one would ever want him as more than a source of pleasure.
He pushed himself to his feet, moving to the door of Haldir’s talan before knocking, “Haldir?”
His voice was soft and though he tried hard to mask it, he couldn’t hide a bit of sadness in it.
The proud Marchwarden opened the door to him, “Prince of Mirkwood? I wish just going to lay down for the night…How might I be of service to you?”
The words couldn’t have stunned him more had Haldir thrown him off the platform to plummet down. Legolas stood in silence for a moment before snapping himself out of the daze, “I wished to thank you for the bow, it’s the most beautiful gift I’ve ever received… Hannon le”
Haldir offered a light hint of a smile, “You are most welcome, prince of Mirkwood, ‘tis a gift well deserved with your amazing talent, I do not require gratitude for it.”
Legolas bowed his head, “I shall leave you to find some rest”
Yet the prince lingered, the instance wasn’t lost on Haldir. He could make his move now and win the Wood Elf into his bed… but he didn’t. To rush this would mean to lose sight of the goal to turn this into a long-term agreement, “Good night, prince of Mirkwood”
Again the prince bowed his head, “Good night”
As the door closed Legolas moved down the flight of stairs, confused by the oddity of the situation. Good night.
Legolas had been ready to lay with the Marchwarden, to feel that attraction Haldir spoke of, but the Galadhrim had denied him, had wished him a good night.
Good night.
Lord Celeborn’s words echoed through his mind, ‘I shall expect you to make the most of this new opportunity and not to damage my thrust in believing your story’
But the idea of Haldir’s affection was near enough to make him forsake the idea. He wanted to welcome the Marchwarden to his bed, show true gratitude.
Haldir wouldn’t be cruel to him, not as Maglor had been. With Haldir, he’d be safe from harm.
It might be his chance at something good, something better. His only chance, because with Elladan thinking it absolutely incomprehensible for Haldir to like him just for him Legolas knew whatever expectance he might’ve had toward Elladan was misplaced.
Elladan would never want to be with him and frankly, Legolas didn’t blame him.
Meanwhile Elladan stood in the darkness attacking a random tree with his sword, slashing at it continuously until he heard a cough from near him, “’Dan, I think it surrenders”
Elladan turned to look at his brother, “I hope ada gets here soon”
His twin raised a brow, “I thought you didn’t want him to meddle in your affairs?”
The other gave a nod of agreement, “’Tis true, however it would seem as though Grandfather is working against me. He has Haldir fighting for Legolas’ affections… and he believes them true whereas they’re simply words to make the Marchwarden meet his goal. How can I fight that? How do I stop that?”
Elrohir sighed softly, “Haldir’s not a bad catch for one such as he, other noble Elves might not even consider such a thing. Why are you so angry over this, did you not want for his happiness?”
His twin gave a nod, “I did. I do…. Just I had hoped…He doesn’t deserve to find happiness with someone who doesn’t genuinely care for him. Haldir’s just doing what he was asked. No more.”
Elrohir raised his brow, “And you would genuinely care for him? Despite his tainted existence? Despite his sexual promiscuity?”
Elladan frowned, “I would love him for all he was, all he is and all he can be.”
Elrohir grinned, “You’ve fallen hard, haven’t you my brother?”
With a sigh Elladan nodded, “But I fear Legolas doesn’t realize it. He only sees Haldir, only notices his affection and not mine. How can I make him see?”
His brother shrugged, “By not allowing him to ignore it…” There was a moment of silence before Elrohir continued, “But ‘Dan, isn’t he better off with Haldir? Think of what people would think, would say… And ada, what would he think?”
Elladan looked at his brother then, “He would think the same as me, that Legolas deserves better than what he’s gotten… and he deserves love as much as, if not more than, anyone else.”
