Fifteen Years
Chapter 8: Imladris
The next morning, they passed the borders of the Greenwood, waving farewell to the border guards as they rode through. As soon as they were well out of sight through the grassy knolls, Glorfindel reined in and glanced at Legolas. "It is time, Sarnlass, to fulfill your oath."
Legolas took courage from the crystal blue eyes that met his own reassuringly. Taking a deep breath and ignoring the painful tightness in his stomach, he reached to unfasten his cloak, sweeping it away from his body. His loose hair shone about him, and he tilted his head slightly, giving Glorfindel a silent salute before he wheeled his horse about and galloped back down the line to take his place beside Mirie.
One glance at Hereval, and the guard swept off his own cloak, revealing his warrior braids and the captains insignia on his tunic. With a quick spur of his own mount, he rode forward to take Legolas' former place at Glorfindels side. There was a brief murmur as the escort noticed the change, but it was followed by a respectful silence.
Mirie gave Legolas a warm smile, and nodded her head. "Mae Govannen, Sarnlass."
Legolas returned the smile, feeling his heart lighten somewhat. It was done.
It was an eight day ride to Imladris, and the spring weather held unseasonably well. On the eve of the seventh day the shores of the Bruinen River came into view. The escort quickened their pace, but Lord Glorfindel held them back. "We camp here tonight."
"My lord," One respectfully protested. "We can be home by midnight."
"Yes, we could be home by midnight." Glorfindel replied with a thoughful nod, "But what of our dear Mirie? Would you have her arrive like a human whore in the middle of the night to be thrust unrested and unbathed into her new lord's bed?"
The other elf stepped back, "No. My apologies, my lord. I did not consider her needs."
"We will arrive as scheduled in the morning," Glorfindel said dismissively, "And Mirie shall have proper ceremony as is her due. Besides, Sarnlass, Hereval and I will be riding on directly with the new escort while you will have the next weeks to lie in your own beds."
Properly chastened, the other elf saluted and turned away. Glorfindel approached Legolas and Mirie where they sat quietly, enjoying each the comfort of each others company. Mirie rose as he approached and raised her hand to her heart in respect. "Hannon le, hir nin. That was most thoughtful of you."
He smiled warmly. "To do otherwise would have been unfair to you and to the Lord and Lady of Imladris. They deserve your full attentions, my beauty."
Mirie nodded gratefully as Glorfindel's eyes rested on Legolas. "And how do you fair, Sarnlass?"
"Weary, but well, my lord." Legolas replied honestly, "You say we ride directly from Imladris tomorrow?"
"Yes. When we arrive, the escort will break off, leaving you and Mirie at the back. Raise your cloak, if you'd like." Glorfindel said with a sly gleam. "Mirie will ride forward, and I will present her to Lord Elrond. Feanal will join you. Then the fresh escort will come forward and I will lead us out."
Glorfindel looked back to Mirie. "And are you ready, Mirie, Courtesan of Lothlorien?"
Mirie gave him a pert smile. "Will the twins be there, my lord?"
Laughter rang through the rocky river canyon. "Be warned, my dear. Their mother protects them like a mother bear."
Mirie shrugged. "Celebrķan has known me since I was a child. I'm well warned. But to answer your question, my lord, aye, I am ready."
Glorfindel gave her an appraising look. "I would say that you are. Get some rest, Courtesan. You'll need it."
He turned away with a grin, leaving Mirie and Legolas to exchange amused smiles.
Legolas drank in the familiar sight of Rivendell as they crossed the bridge and rode into the courtyard. The escort broke off, and as the new escort joined them, Mirie rode forward and dismounted at Glorfindel's side.
Upon the steps, Lord Elrond, magnificent in burgundy robes with a gold trim lightly held Celebrķan 's hand in his as Mirie approached and knelt, offering her contract of exchange on upturned palms.
Elrond took the contract, unscrolled it and perused it lightly before saying something Legolas could not hear. Mirie rose, curtsied gracefully and moved to stand behind Lady Celebrķan as Glorfindel and Elrond spoke briefly. Legolas became aware of a cloaked presence on horseback at his side and glanced over at the figure. Linen leggings, and high clasped cloak with hood raised...so this then must be the Imladris courtesan for the exchange.
"Mae govannen." Legolas murmured politely, but the figure held up a hand as if to caution him to silence.
There was some sort of commotion towards the front, and Legolas looked up to see Lord Elrond standing in front of someone he recognized as one of the twin sons of Rivendell. Elrond stopped and surveyed the gathering, his eyes narrowed as though seeking something. Legolas held his cloak a little closer. He was well known here as the Prince, and had no wish to be so publicly unmasked.
"YOU!" Elrond's voice boomed across the courtyard, his finger pointed directly at the mounted riders.
Everyone froze, including Legolas, his heart suddenly beating so loudly he was certain that it could be heard as far as Brie Village. Realizing he was to suffer the humiliation of being publicly unmasked he took a deep breath and slowly reached to raise his hood. It was then he noticed that the linen clad leg on the horse beside him was visibly trembling as though in terror, and paused, taking time to wonder if there was more happening that he could not see.
Elrond made his way through the crowd, which parted like a wave. Glorfindel was quicker, grabbing the horse's rein in one hand, and yanking it's rider down with the other. In a swift movement that was now familiar to Legolas, the cloak was unclasped and tossed away.
Beneath, coal black locks surrounded brilliant grey eyes, and a mirthful face laughing so hard that it could not take a proper breath. Legolas nearly laughed aloud himself as he recognized the other son of Elrond.
"ELROHIR!" Elrond's voice boomed once more.
The younger twin swallowed his laughter as his father advanced on him. Glorfindel jerked him to his feet and stood him squarely in front of his father, shaking his shoulders hard.
Elrond stood, arms crossed, his right eyebrow raised in a terrible glare that had been known to send grown warriors scrambling away in fear. "Where is Feanal?"
"I am here, my lord." A rider broke from the escort of Elves and nodded in respect as he pulled away the cape and tunic of the guards of Imladris to reveal his plain riding tunic and collar beneath.
"You thought this would be a grand joke, did you?" Elrond snapped at his son, who seemed to quail somewhat.
"Oh, come, Ada." Elladan stepped between his father and brother. "No harm done, and really, if he'd pulled it off, can you imagine the look on Grandfather's face when he realized it was 'Roh kneeling before him?"
Elrond turned his glare to his older son and thundered, "Well, ion nin, you have not to imagine my expression! Honestly! One would think you were mere elflings to play such pranks!"
When Elladan winced, he continued. "The Exchange of Courtesans is a time honored tradition. It is not a game nor a farce to be played out for your amusement! You will apologize to the Courtesans for making a mockery of their sacrifice."
The twins glanced at each other and stepped forward, speaking as one, their voices echoing their contrition. "We apologize, Courtesans. We meant no harm. If we have caused you distress we are truly sorry."
Feador spoke warmly, laughter in his voice. "Apology accepted, and I had as much hand in its execution as you." Gesturing to Legolas, he asked, "What say you, companion? Are they forgiven?"
Legolas had been on the recieving end of their pranks before, and indeed, had participated in more than a few of the tricks that ensured that the Last Homely House was never in need amusement. Gravely, he nodded beneath his hood and spoke in a low voice, "Your apology is accepted,Sons of Elrond." He couldn't stop himself from adding, "It was well a played turn."
Legolas felt Elrond's perceptive gaze turn towards him and winced, fearing he had said too much. He had often encouraged the twins in the past. Being the co-conspirator in their plots was much safer than being their victim. Still, he had no desire to be shown to all of Imladris. Elrond stepped closer, his brow furrowing.
Before Elrond could speak, Glorfindel. mounted once again, turned his horse about and called command. "Guard! Ride Out!"
Legolas sighed in relief as they cantered through the archway and across the bridge. By his reckoning, he now owed Lord Glorfindel two favors.
Ta Da!

Dearest Readers! Thank you so much! I've not time this evening to acknowledge you all seperately, so I will simply say thank you! :)
And, yes, Glorfindel is rather experienced in dealing with peculiarities of Courtesanship. But don't tell anyone, okay? I mean, if EVERYONE knew the details of the little blue book, then.. well, we'd never get any work done around here, would we? ;)
Oh! And for those who mentioned "More Serious Elf" - (Thanks a billion for reading that! It will get posted here when I think it's perfect.) the Monthly Update is up, and I think i've finally got my update notice list working properly if you want to be added! :)
