The next morning, they were anxious to finish the tournament and return home. The news of Saul’s arrest for the murders of Tari’s parents had spread everywhere in the tournament. People who had called her a liar about her older brother being the one who killed her parents came and apologized for it. Hugo tried to go see her several times that morning but he found that he was prevented from seeing her. Aria, Tari’s friend warned her when Hugo was near and had her go off in a different direction from which he was coming in. Hugo knew he would see her during the tourney and would be able to speak to her.
The semi finals of sword and daggers went off like clockwork with Tari winning her match as did Legolas and now they were set to meet up in the final round of daggers. The sword was the same with Elessar and Tari with both of them set to meet in the final round of swords.
Legolas and Tari just showcased their skills all the way through their match; Legolas did several flips over Tari who blocked the dagger swipe with one of her own. They acted like this was a battle instead of a friendly duel. It lasted about thirty minutes before Legolas lost both his daggers and had her daggers at his throat before Hugo called it to a halt.
Aragorn and she did a similar duel but it really lasted more than thirty minutes more like an hour before Aragorn lost his sword to Tari who held both swords in hand at him. Hugo called it to a halt as soon as Tari got a hold of Aragorn’s sword. Tari had won both duels with style.
While they were setting up for the archery, Tari asked them both why they allowed her to win when they were better than she was at the weapons. They told her they allowed her to win for if they won it would mean they have to return next year to compete again.
Tari smiled, her voice wavering, “That wouldn’t be too bad. I would get to see you two again.”
Then, she walked away from them to compose herself for the archery tourney; she didn’t want to let them see her cry. When the lad went racing past her to alert her of the start, she rushed back to the field where she took her place in the line up.
Elrond stood up and walked to the platform, his face smiling as he gazed over the thirty archers; he spoke, “Since we have so many archers here, we’ve changed the rules a bit. As you can see, the targets are set up only fifty paces from where you are located at behind the wooden posts where your bows are placed upon. After the targets have been struck, the ones who have nailed a bull’s eye shall continue on to the next round, where an additional ten steps added to the target. After that, twenty steps will make the targets even further from you…till one of you is left standing will be the winner.”
After the crowd cheered for several minutes, Elrond raised his hand for silence, which the crowd obeyed. “If you are ready, we shall begin?”
The archers all grabbed their bows and started to cheer loudly before they placed their bows in front of them.
“Ready…”
The archers all grabbed their bows and an arrow.
“Aim…”
They raised their bow to their eye level with an arrow aimed for the target.
“Fire!”
The volleys of arrows flew through the sky at the targets. As soon as they were all within the targets the runners all rushed over to their target which they were assigned, those who didn’t hit the bull’s eyes knew that they didn’t pass the first round by their runner holding a red flag up in his hand. Those who passed the first round saw a green flag in their runner’s hand.
The archers who didn’t pass were about ten of the thirty archers. They congratulated those who passed the first round and left the arena to watch the remainder archers and cheer their favorites on. Tari and Legolas passed the first round easily.
They got to eighty paces back and there were only five of the thirty archers left. Elrond was just about to speak up when he noticed that Tari held her bow up above her head which was the sign of a question for the announcer.
“Yes, Tari, what is your question?”
“My Lord, can we add one more arrow to our bow so we can finish this event quicker it is already getting to be in the heat of the day and we would like to finish this event soon?” asked Tari.
Elrond’s eyebrow rose up in amusement before he turned to the show holder who nodded as she did not like the heat even in her costume she wore as Queen of the tourney. “Be iest lîn (As you wish.). So be it.”
The other three archers knew this would make or break them so they armed their bow with two arrows believing that Tari or the other archer wouldn’t have practiced with more than one arrow.
Aragorn listened to the crowd around him murmur about how that they were going to see Tari fall from her place as the best Archer in the tourney. He chuckled as he watched Tari aim her two arrows at the target before he turned his eyes onto Legolas who also had two arrows in his bow.
Elrond made the signal to fire. Two green flags were raised as three red flags went up. The other three archers missed their targets and lost. It was only Tari and Legolas now competing against each other. Elrond ordered the targets moved to the end of the arena. A murmur rose from the crowd as they had never seen that happen before.
Tari turned to Legolas and whispered, “I never hit a target at that range before. It’s farther than I have ever done before.”
“Believe in yourself, Tari and you can do it,” Legolas whispered gently in her ear.
Tari could only hope she hit the target and Legolas miss his to win. But she knew he would win the match. But Tari raised her bow and prayed that she could hit it – she barely heard the two arrows hit as the roar of the crowd echoed in her ears. Her eyes could not move away from the green flag that was held by her runner. She did it! She managed to hit the target. Then, she glanced over and saw the red flag being held up for Legolas. He missed his target. She turned to look at him to find no one standing there as she saw him walking towards his runner to get his arrows from him.
'Legolas, why did you lose this match to me? You are my superior in archery.' Tari thought as she looked at his backside walking down the arena to gather his arrows. She turned towards Aragorn to see his look of pride but also disappointment at Legolas who was the better archer. She went to the platform and received her trophy for winning the archery competition.
They were quiet when they returned to their tent but not for long. Tari threw her trophy down on the cot and turned to look at them both. “I didn’t deserve to win those tourneys, Elessar, Legolas. You both were my betters.”
“True but this is your time, Tari, not ours. We’re just guests here. You deserve those wins,” spoke Legolas.
“I really don’t, both of you were better than I was. That is certain, Legolas. I’m not even that good with sword and I beat my own ancestor. The daggers yes, I did beat you in, Legolas but you were by far my superior in using them and could have easily had removed them from my hands within a matter of seconds.” Tari stated, calmly and yet she was still angry at them for letting her win when they deserved to win.
The tent flap suddenly moved inward as a voice was heard outside. Tari quickly motioned them to go into the other room and remain there, as she composed herself and pushed open the tent flap.
“Aria, what brings you here?” asked Tari.
“Pete needs a word with you about a scene, Tari.” spoke Aria.
“Which scene is he wanting me to look at, Aria?”
“Helm’s deep.”
“Why does he need me to look at that scene for?”
“It has a death of an Elf in it.”
“Which elf…there is no elf at Helm’s deep…he means Legolas?”
“No Tari, it’s not Legolas…it’s Haldir.”
“Haldir was not at Helm’s deep. Give me the phone! I’m calling that two timing little fat man!”
“But Tari…it could be midnight there!”
“I do not bloody care if it is in the middle of the damn night there! He’s doing the whole Helm's deep scene wrong!”
“All right, here let me dial the number.” Aria pulled out her cell phone and dialed the number and handed it over to Tari.
“Peter, its Tari. Yes, I know it’s late there. I just saw the script of Helm’s deep. I am pissed Peter. You told me that you would do that scene as the book states nothing more.” Tari spoke, her voice no more than a hiss. She grunted a few times which meant that Peter was speaking. “No! Haldir must not be at Helm’s Deep but if you must have him and Arwen there. Aragorn must encourage him and Arwen to leave before the fighting begins.”
Aria watched as Tari argued the scene with Peter before Peter finally gave in to her argument. They then worked on the dialog of the scene after another twenty minutes, Tari and Peter ended the call. “So? What did he say about changing the scene?”
“He agreed to edit the scenes and he has to call back the three actors to shoot the new scene,” said Tari, as she handed her her phone back.
“That’s good. You and he did the dialog together?”
“Yes, I’ll have to write the scene down while it’s still fresh in my mind. I think he was writing it down but I did elvish which needs to be written done properly. I told him you will send it to him via UPS overnight so he can get it in less than three days from now.”
“Okay, just send the scene to me via Gandalf.”
“No, you will have it before night comes this very day.” Tari said, as she picked up a writing pad and a pen.
“I’ll be back in five hours from now, Tari to collect the script from you.” Aria said, before she walked out of the tent.
“Is she gone?” whispered Aragorn, as he stood at the flap of the sleeping chambers.
“Yes, she’s gone, Aragorn. I must work on this before I lose it.” Tari said, as she started to write something down on the paper.
She was so busy writing down the scene that she didn’t notice that Aragorn had opened their travel jug and poured water into the goblet, placed it on the table next to her. She glanced up, smiled before she lowered her head again and started to write again.
Aragorn and Legolas watched as she wrote feverishly. At times, she would speak the script out loud before resuming her writing. It was only three hours later, when she finally got it finished and placed her pen down. She did a reread of the script mentally and saw the new scene even better in her mind’s eye than what Peter had originally done. She smiled as she started to wrap up the script in a protective cover.
“Tari, may I read it?” asked Aragorn, as he held his hand out.
“Oh, yes. Please tell me what you think of it? The original scene was to have Haldir of Lothlorien die at Helm’s deep but he and the other elves were never there beyond Legolas. I made him change the scene to where it would not have Haldir there when the fighting starts nor would Arwen be there as well.” Tari said, as she handed the script to Aragorn.
“WHAT!” snapped Legolas and Aragorn at the same time.
Tari explained Peter’s plan for the scene and then asked them both to read what she had scripted for the new scene. They both turned to the script and read it. Aragorn handed the script back to Tari.
“Even though it really didn’t happen at Helm’s deep, it is better than what he had planned for the scene,” Aragorn stated.
“True. But there really shouldn’t be any elves at Helm’s deep beyond Legolas. That would be true to the books. But he changed the Fellowship about some, by adding more scenes that wasn’t originally there in the books…like showing Rosie, the girl Hobbit that Sam married in The Return of The King, having Gandalf meet up with Frodo on the road to Hobbiton and other things like having Arwen show up when Frodo got stabbed by the Ringwraith King and she taking him to Rivendell when he rode there himself. Who it should have been was Glorfindel on Asfaloth. But he wanted to introduce Arwen to the audience before they see her in Rivendell or in the third book, I’m guessing at.” Tari stated calmly as she put the script in something to keep it from being bent or ruined while traveled.
The tent flap moved inward couple of minutes later; Tari stood up and walked out of the tent with the script in hand. Tari stepped back into the room with Aria behind her, not really looking too happy with herself. Aria looked mildly shocked at Aragorn and Legolas before they hurriedly left the tent to get the horses ready to leave.
“All right Tari; where in the world did you find those two handsome men? I know you do not leave your home for no reason beyond coming to the tournament…so where did they come from?” asked Aria.
“You really do not wish to know.” Tari said, as she gazed at her.
“I insist.”
‘Forgive me, Aria, for this but you really can not know the truth.’
“All right, you forced me to tell you.”
“Good! Now who are they?”
“The dark haired man is my uncle by blood…my father’s twin brother. The family hid that knowledge from everyone even the police…even I didn’t know it till he showed up at my home two months ago with his best friend from school. My uncle has invited me to move to England now that he has found me and I have accepted his offer.”
“When are you leaving?”
“Not sure, maybe at the start of next month or when I sell the house and land.”
“Have you told Hugo yet?”
“We’re not on speaking terms, Aria. He’ll try to convince me from leaving my home with my uncle and his friend.”
Aria realized that she knew who could own Tari’s lands and home. “How much land do you own in total?”
“Over 500 acres land, Aria, why?”
“I think you can sell the lands to the show holder. She has been searching for large acres of land to use for the tournament grounds. What better place to hold the tourney than on your lands, Tari!” Aria said, as she looked at her.
“I’ll consider her as a possibility, Aria. But I have to get this tent ready to be vacated soon. Here’s the script for Peter. Make sure it goes out this morning via UPS overnight mail. It has to get there by tomorrow afternoon. Got that?” as Tari handed her the script.
“Yes, I know. I’ll see you in couple of months, Tari.” Aria said, as she walked out of the tent and into the crowd of tournament people heading home.
“Goodbye Aria. I will not be seeing you in two months.” Tari whispered, as she quickly got the things that they had brought from home packed and ready to go which also included the trophy she won.
She stepped outside to see Aragorn and Legolas walking towards her with the horses ready to go. Tari quickly placed everything in the carriers and didn’t even ask Aragorn to remove his sword so it could be placed in the carrier with her sword. Tari did a quick last look in the tent to make sure that they didn’t leave anything behind and when she was satisfied that there was nothing left behind, climbed into the saddle and they headed for home only after a brief stop by the show holder to speak with her.
