Chapter 1 – Whiskey and Guilt
The door to the city streets opened and closed, causing chocolate brown eyes to glance up, but upon realizing it was no one interesting, they returned to their fixed gaze on the wooden bar. To the untrained eye he seemed to be lost in thought, but with keen senses he observed his surroundings so he could take every bit of it to memory. He’d done that a lot lately, afraid to miss another special moment…special detail. He’d kill himself if he missed another moment that would change his life.
Disgusted with himself, he picked up the glass mug, threw ithis his soft and un-aged lips, then gulped the golden, bitter tasting liquid. It warmed the pit of his stomach, which was the only pleasant quality of the vile drink. How HE could drink the stuff, he’d never know.
Out of the left corner of his eye he could see a worn wooden wall with many names and objects carved into it, some of it non-legible. Out of the right corner of his eye he could see many tables and booths, only two of them filled. The place was comfortably empty and quiet, always was at this time of night and that was the way he liked it. It made the stares few and the questions even fewer.
He had to admit he must look a sight. Who wouldn’t be curious to see an elf in a bar so late at night? But not just an elf, but a blonde-haired, fair-skinned, brown-eyed, and tenderly built…not to mention drunk…and an excessively beautiful elf that. But he was a regular here, so he was never bothered.
He drank the last of the liquid and set the glass down. He looked up and peered around to search for the bar tender. He rarely glanced up so he took advantage to examine the things that were normally out of his peripheral vision. Not much to see though, just a few candle lit chandeliers, a table of two men talking that he had been unaware of, and a large window that allowed easy vision from the alley placplace was located on…it was empty now.
It was pathetic to him that he lowered his standards to a bar in a city of men where no one knew him. Even more pathetic when he was here because he felt guilty and felt even more guilty because he was downing alcohol to forget his guilt. Why was he feeling guilty? Who knew…could it be because he ran away from his beautiful home where he was one of the most beautiful elf princes to ever walk middle earth? Or could it be because he left the throne to pursue of a life of bar hustling? Someone tell him, please, because he didn’t understand it himself.
A clearing of a throat snapped him out of his thoughts…it was the tender.
"Will you be havin’ another master elf?" The man’s accent was familiar and friendly. He had been the only friendly face that the elf had seen in a while. And his accent reminded him of a "person" he once knew.
"Yes please."
A nod and he reached to an unseen place beneath the wooden bar top and returned with a bottle.
"Tell me if I git too nosey, but how come a fair creature such as yer self is in such a place as this drinkin’ warm whiskey?"
"It’s a long story…"
"Well, would you like ta have someone to share it with?"
Brown orbs stared in surprise, he had never considered actually communicating with this man. Actually, he didn’t communicate with any men, or elves, any more. But in all truth, it would make him feel better to vocalize his somber past; maybe this is what he needed.
"I could use the company."
"Good deal, master elf…" The tender pulled up a stool that was hidden out of sight behind the bar, kind of like the alcohol bottles.
"Where should I start?"
"How ‘bout the beginning’?"
