Away!... Quick footsteps sounded in the dark corridors when the fair figure of an elf hurried up. Frightened he looked round. One hand held a thin blanket to his lower body while the second was in front of him so that he had not run into something during the run. His long fair hair flew behing him when the footsteps quickened...
'Steps...' he listened to the quiet night disturbed by the sounds of his run. He halted to ensure he didn't hear any footsteps. Confused he looked around. He didn't remember this place. He lost his way! Where is he? The corridor seemed darker than the others, bodefully quiet. Scared he looked round again. C he he try going back?
'No!' his sensitive ears heard the sound of quiet footsteps approaching. He could not go back. He had to go on. He had not any idea whehe che corridor led, he had never been there.
Suddenly his wrist was caught in tight grasp. He screamed when his body changed its direction and was pulled in darkness. A warm palm covered his mouth and a strong arm embraced him. The doors clicked quietly behind them.
He struggled to free himself. He tried to push away the strong arm which held him like the iron tyre. But his arms remained motionless. He tried to scream but the palm covering his mouth didn't allow it. He felt his heart throbbing like a bird caugh the the cage.
"Shhh," a hot breath brushed the tip of his ear. "Calm yourself," a soft voice whispered. "Quiet or they will hear you."
Immediately he stopped the fighting and tensed in expectation. He listened to the approaching steps. They grew louder although they were so light only an elf could hear them. He held his breath as if it could disclose him.
He nearly breathed with relief when the sound of the footsteps on the coridor ceased. But the most alarming situation didn't allow it. He realized he had escaped one danger only to find himself in another. He felt the strong arm embracing his body, the warm body pressed to his back and the hot breath caressing his shoulder. He trembled as the tears filled his eyes. Even all fell into silence the unknown elf didn't release him. How was it possible to fall into similar trouble? What happened to everyone tonight?
"Well, well, well. Let's see what do we have here," the elf behind him whispered. The elf turned him in the arms until he could blink and pressed him against the wall next to the door. He opened his mouth when the pressure of the palm relaxed. But before a sound could come from his throat the hand was back. "Oh... prince Legolas."
He realized that the chamber had not been so dark as the corridor. The moonlight fell inside through the open window. Though the tears in his eyes blured his sight. He had to blink few times until they dripped down his face. He focused on the fair face in front of him. His eyes widened with fear. Black eyes glowed near him and made his heart nearly skip a beat. A shiver run down his spine. He knew them, he knew those eyes although he looked at them only once. He didn't dare any more. Their look was so intensive that it seemed to penetrate his whole body, to read his every thought. It was so calculating and cold although silver flames danced in them. He had heard many rumours since he came to Imladris and he was willing to believe them. Erestor, the chief advisor of Lord Elrond, always polite and inconspicuous dark elf, was cold as a piece of ice. He was not one of elves he wished to stay alone with, especially not in the middle of the night. Now he was really scared.
The black eyes watched him for a while like they could really read his thoughts. Then he whispered: "I'll release you if you promise to be quiet. We don't want anybody to hear you, now do we?" After some moments he arched an eyebrow in the question when Legolas didn't respond. The only thing Legolas could do was to nod timidly.
The horror paralyzed him with such force that he wasn't nearly able to do that movement. Screaming? How could he when his throat was tight with fear. His heart throbbed in alarm. Erestor took his hand away but watched his widened eyes all along. Silver tears flowed down the prince' s cheeks without notice. An amusement flashed in black eyes until they became serious again.
Erestor ceased pressing the prince' body to the wall and took a step back. But Legolas didn't move, only watched him in the pure horror. He raised the hand to wipe the tearful face. The fair elf immediately flinched as if burned and his breath quickened even more. Prince was like a small animal caught in the corner.
"Are you scared of me?" Erestor asked with his quiet voice although it was more than obvious. What could he expect? Even so it hurt when the prince flinched like he was a balrog. He laughed sadly in his mind. No, even the balrog would not scare the prince so much. But why did he flee? What disturbed him? Did he recognize the footsteps in the dark corridor ?
He took another step away from Legolas who watched his every movement and made to move towards the table next to the window. There was a set of the silver goblets arranged around the candle stick on the table. Erestor quickly lit its five candels and the warm flames the the chamber. He took one goblet until he turned to the fair prince again. "I will not harm you. There's no need to be scared," he tried to ensure him. But it had no effect.
He approached another table with a plate with fruits and a carafe with wine on it . He filled the goblet before putting it aside and returned to the figure who stood tensed near the door. The quick look Legolas took at the door was expressive enough. But Erestor blocked his way whether he wanted to flee or not. Their eyes met again.
"What happened?" dark-haired elf asked.
But the prince didn't answer. He sighed. This would be even more difficult than he thought. Legolas was really shocked. What made him run through the whole house only with a thin blanket wraped around his hips? His eyes watched the slightly trembling fair body. The prince was so beautiful...
Erestor took his arm firmly. At the same time Legolas screamed and ripped out to reach the door. His hand was nearly on the handle when he tangled his feet in the free tip of the blanket. And with another scream he fell to the ground. He fought the blanket until he released himself and again he reached his hand for the handle. But he didn't manage to stand up because Erestor knelt next to him and grasped his arms.
"No!" prince fought back trying to release himself. He turned away his face, silver streams of tears flowing down. The dark-haired elf pulled him into his arms and embraced him tightly.
"Shhh, I won't harm you, Legolas," he whispered to the golden hair a stroked it slowly. "Don't be frightened... everything will be alright."
Legolas slowly stopped resisting, though his body shook with quiet sobs. He wished nothing more than to believe Erestor's words. If only for a little while everything would be alright. But it was not. He buried his face in the black robe and stopped thinking. Erestor's comforting whisper joined into soothing melody, he didn't percieve the words.
With the gentle movements of Erestor's palm stroking fair hair the waterfall of the tears slowly faded. Until there was none to wet the dark fabric. Still Legolas stayed in the warm embrace. He only raised his head when the dark elf stood up carrying him in his arms. Defeated he closed his eyes while they entered the dark bedroom. He had no strenght to fight. He could not escape. He felt as his naked body came down to the cool bed. To his surprise he realized that the soft hands covered him with a thick blanket.
He looked at Erestor who was returning from the alight room with the filled goblet. The dark-haired elf put aside the candlestick and sat down to him. Legolas watched the black eyes in wonder. The golden flames mirrored in those eyes, watched him carefully although they didn't lost anything of their pungency.
Erestor handed him the goblet filled with wine. Legolas looked down, his blue eyes red from crying. He rested his weight on his elbow and took the silver goblet. Mistrustfuly he sniffed the liquid before he took a sip. The wine was strong and sweet and he felt the warmth invoked in his body. He felt his features blush by the time the warm wave lessened and spread into his whole body.
"Do you feel better?" Erestor asked when he took the empty goblet and put it on the night-table.
Legolas nodded and fell down into the soft pillows.
"Very well then, now you can tell me what happened."
"Nothing," the prince whispered and averted his eyes.
"Nothing," repeated Erestor. "In the middle of the night, unclad... So then tell me why did the twins follow you?"
Legolas turned away. He didn't want to speak to Erestor, anyway he would not believe him. It would be best if he left Imladris. He jerked uncomfortably when the warm hand touched his shoulder.
"I think you should stay here tonight," Erestor said quietly.
"And where will you go?"
Silent laugh sent a shiver down his spine. The hand disappeared and Erestor stood up. He took the candlestick and went round the bed. "I'm going to stay right here," he announced to the widened blue eyes watching him from the dark pillows. "Maybe you haven't noticed, but this bed is big enough for even five elves..." Really, Erestor was so far and there was a mass of black blankets between them. "If it comforts you, you have my word I will not come near to you."
Legolas nodded slightly. Whatever rumours were spread in Imladris everyone could trust Erestor's word. So he watched the dark-haired elf puting the candlestick aside and snuffing out the candles. For a moment the darkness blinded his eyes, Erestor disappeared from his sight. He heard the fabric of his robe rustle and Erestor slipped into the bed.
"Good night," Legolas whispered to the opposite side of the bed.
"To you as well, Legolas," the y cay came after a while.
