Thawing the Ice
Chapter 1--Nothing but A Bother
Erestor knew someone was watching him as he worked and he had a good idea who. Only two Elves would enter the library unannounced while he was working. Lord Elrond was in his study so that left only one other possibility. "What do you want, Glorfindel? I am busy," he asked sharply. He didn't bother to look up.
"You are not pleased to see me, dear councilor? I am wounded," Glorfindel said. He walked in and sat down in a chair in front of the desk.
"You will be if you do not leave me be. I have neither the time nor inclination to play your games," Erestor retorted, dipping his quill in the inkwell and continuing to write.
Glorfindel peered at the parchment. "What are you so intent on? Writing a love letter?" he asked.
Erestor put the quill in the inkwell and scowled at him. "I *was* writing a report on the household expenses until *someone* began disturbing me," he said sharply.
"How dare they," Glorfindel said. He pretended to look for an intruder. "Point the nuisance out and I will remove him or her for you," he said.
Deciding the ink was dry; Erestor rolled up the parchment and stood. "Now if you do not mind *some* of us have work to do and Lord Elrond is waiting for this report," he said.
Glorfindel just laughed and swept an arm towards the door with mock gallantry. "After you, my sharp tongued advisor," he said.
Erestor sniffed disdainfully and walked past the blond haired Elf. He headed for Elrond's study without looking back.
Glorfindel allowed himself to enjoy the view of Erestor's well-formed backside as the advisor stormed away. He watched until Erestor entered Elrond's study then headed off to tend his own duties.
Elrond looked up when Erestor entered the room. "Good, you are here. I trust that means you have finished the report," he said.
"As you asked, my Lord," Erestor said. He handed Elrond the parchment and waited while he read it.
"Very good, all seems in order. My thanks, Erestor. You may return to your other tasks," Elrond said when he finished.
Erestor bowed slightly in respect and left, closing the study door softly behind him. He returned to the library and went to work on the next report.
Glorfindel returned from his patrol at midnight and noticed a light in the library. He is still working, he always does this then he is crosser then ever the next day, he thought. He decided not to miss the chance to tease the black haired advisor again and entered the library. Erestor was bent over a thick book - he didn't even acknowledge Glorfindel's presence. The balrog-slayer hated being ignored, so he sat down on the desk.
Erestor looked up and scowled. "What do you want?" he snapped, "and kindly remove yourself from my desk."
"I am bored. Care to entertain me?" Glorfindel asked.
"You want me to entertain you?" Erestor asked; giving Glorfindel a dull look that clearly showed that he believed the other Elf was out of his mind.
"Of course, I am more interesting then some book," Glorfindel said. He leaned closer, putting one hand on the book to support his own weight as he shifted his balance - and to distract Erestor.
The advisor merely slammed the book shut on Glorfindel's hand.
"Oww, bloody hell, Erestor!" Glorfindel yelled, leaping off the table and doing something akin to a small dance while clutching the wounded limb. "That hurt!"
"I am sure that it did, however I would wager that you are no longer bored," Erestor said, only glancing up while talking, and then opened the book again on the relevant page and continued reading as if nothing had happened.
"Nay, instead I have a sore hand and it is my sword hand! What am I supposed to do about my sparring lessons tomorrow?" Glorfindel demanded.
"Pray to the Valor it stops hurting by that time. You also might wish to think of a reason it hurts, unless you would prefer to tell the truth," Erestor said casually.
Glorfindel glared at the smug advisor and stormed out of the room and slammed the door loudly behind him. He stalked up the hall, planning suitable revenge.

Elrond looked up and smiled in greeting as Glorfindel entered the dining hall the next morning then he noticed the balrog slayer's swollen hand. "Glorfindel, what happened?" the Half-Elf asked. "Sit down and let me have a look at it."
"Erestor was in a foul mood last evening," Glorfindel explained, but he sat down as bidden.
Elrond studied his senchenel's hand. "It is only a bad sprain and should heal by tomorrow, but you should not use it today. You are excused from sparring ," he said.
Erestor arose and dressed for the day. There was much that needed to be done. There was to be a formal dinner in a week and it was his duty to prepare for it. After combing out his hair he went to the door and opened it.
Down the hallway, two servants could hear the advisor's angry voice, shouting the name of the balrog slayer. A few moments later, Erector stepped into the dining hall, soaking wet and leaving small puddles of water behind.
Glorfindel smiled wickedly as everyone in the dining hall stared. "Why Erestor, what is all the fuss about?" he asked innocently. "Did you fall into the bathing pool with your clothes still on?" He was enjoying himself immensely.
Elrond groaned and hid his face in his hands as Erestor started yelling angrily at Glorfindel. Not again, he thought. He decided that he had to put a stop to this scene before it got worse. "Enough, Erestor, go put on dry clothes. We will settle this later," he said.
Erestor would not disobey Elrond, no matter how angry he was, so after a last glare at the amused Glorfindel he stormed out of the dining hall.
Elrond sighed and glanced at the completely unrepentant Glorfindel. It was obviously going to be a very long day….
