Elrond and Arwen do NOT belong to me.
I don`t
know when exactly Arwen tells Elrond of her decision to become mortal, but in
this fic she hasn`t told him yet.
English
isn`t my mother tongue,so there might be some mistakes
I re-uploaded
this fic because the typos in the original were bugging the heck out of me.

The ring
was in Imladris now.Strange, despite of everything he`d witnessed over the
centuries, the Lord Elrond found it hard to believe that the most evil, the most
dangerous thing ever to exist in Arda had now found it`s way to the Last Homely
House. It was probably the human blood flowing in his veins that had caused him
to stubbornly hope against hope that Imladris would somehow remain unblemished
by the stain of Sauron`s influence. But of course he had known it would
eventually happen, and he had known it would happen soon the day Bilbo Baggins
had stood on his doorstep again.Bilbo Baggins who was rapidly beginning to look
his age,who sometimes absentmindedly reached into the pocket of his waistcoat
to fumble for something that was never there.Elrond had recognized the marks
the ring left on everyone who wore it.
Now the
ring was here and Elrond feared the marks it might leave on the Last Homely
House and it`s inhabitants. He sighed,he had sat in his study the entire
evening, intending to do some paperwork but had not made much progress.Again and
again his thoughts had strayed to the fellowship, their quest and the many
perils they would undoubtedly face.Even if they succeeded and the ring was
destroyed it was unlikely that all of them would survive. And if they didn`t
succeed….Elrond gazed out through the open window of his study.Dusk had long
come and gone without him noticing and all he could see, even with his elven
sight, was velvety darkness. The curtains were billowing in a gentle breeze
and, save for a few calls of night birds, the night was completely
silent.Everything seemed so peaceful,so deceptively peaceful. And yet he could
feel it with every fiber of his body, the dark forces that were working
relentlessly against them grew stronger day by day.
~You won`t
be able to withstand them.~
He had felt
the power of the ring himself when the young Hobbit had revealed it at the
council.Poisonous tendrils trying to invade his mind, whispering evil things
and,for a split second,he had felt the urge to listen to it`s whisperings.
~You seem to
mistake power for evil, although you of all should know that not all power is
neccessarily evil.Don`t you remember the time when your people was still truly
powerful?~
Elrond rose
from his desk and wearily ran a hand over his eyes, the cool metal of Vilya brushing
against his brow.He stared down at the ring,no matter how the quest
ended,Vilya`s powers would be lost forever.
~You would
be even less able to protect those most dear to you.~
That was
what Elrond feared the most, being unable to protect the ones he loved. He had
been unable to sway Elros from his decision to live and die a human,he had not
been able to save his king`s life and he had been equally unable to save
Celebrian from the darkness that had
devoured her from the inside.Darkness.He strode to the window, gazing into the
night.
~What would you
do if anything happened to your children?Would you be strong again and accept
it as simply another tragedy you couldn`t prevent,or would you allow yourself
to fade at last?~
clasclass=MsoNormal>“I would
~Isn`t it ironic that you have cared for another
man`s son like he was your own only to lose your daughter to him?You didn’t
foresee that,did you?~
Elrond
sadly shook his head and closed the window. He was tired but reluctant to go to
bed, sleep eluded him more and more often lately.A feeling of restlessness would
come over him, a restlessness that he knew was more than mere apprehension
about the uncertainties that lay ahead.
~You might not
want to admit it to yourself, but you are beginning to feel more and more out of
place in this world that is changing so rapidly,a world in which everything is
slowly slipping away from you…if you let it.~
A rap on his
chamber door interruptet his gloomy musings.
“Come in”
The door opened
and a solemn looking Arwen silently entered.Elrond was a bit surprised to find
she was still up.
“I saw there
was still light in your room,”she explained, remaining close to the door as if
she couldn`t decide whether to stay or leave again.
“Yes,there was
some paperwork I had to do and… well,there still is,”Elrond said,pointing to
the stack of documents on his desk, trying to sound more lighthearted than he
actually felt. Why burden her with his worries?
Arwen only nodded,probably
understanding the reasons for his false cheerfulness all too well. There was a
long silence between them, and Elrond began to suspect that she was trying to
gather her courage to tell him something she knew he would not like.
“Adar,there is
something I have to tell you,”she began, taking a few steps towards him but then
pausing again.
So she would
tell him now,Elrond realized.Tell him that she had decided to give up her
immortality in return for a few decades at Estel`s side.To live surrounded by
sickness and decay which accompanied mortality like a shadow, and to die lonely
and forever separated from her people.
~Forever
seperated from you.~
“I know,”he
said quietly.
Her eyes
widened slightly and Elrond thought he could see tears glistening in them, for a
moment Arwen neither spoke nor moved.
”It`s what my
heart tells me is right,”she said softly, and now there were tears on her
cheeks.
~How can
something be right that hurts you so?~
Elrond wanted
to answer,to implore her to rethink her decision,to try to make her understand
what her sacrifice would truly mean, but somehow his voice failed him and he
could only nod, unable to meet her sad gaze. And what could he possibly say?”I
understand?”He didn`t,nor would he ever.”I accept your decision?”How could a
father accept it when his daughter willingly condemned herself to death. An
enormous pressure began to build in his chest, threatening to choke him and he
turned away from her,his breath hitching in his throat.
Arwen crossed
the distance between them and gently wrapped her arms around him, resting her
cheek against his back.”I wish I could make you understand,I wish I could make
you see that this is the only way I can truly be happy.”
