The woods were very quiet, not a sound was heard. It was almost too eerie as Estel crept towards his prey and just as he was about to release his arrow - a loud, piercing whistle was heard; spooking the deer into flight and set it off out of Estel’s range fast enough to make him wonder if the deer had even been there in the first place. Damn! Estel swore inwardly. Then he heard it again in a much more urgent and demanding tone. Estel leapt to his feet and ran as fast as he could towards the sound at the same time fitting another arrow in his bow ready to fire incase there was danger ahead.
There at the river Bruinen that separated Rivendell’s lands from the rest of Middle Earth were two elves crouched around a small form. They both had their bows on their backs as apposed to having them in hand as Estel did. He could tell Legolas was a member of their hunting party by his blond hair as he knelt next to the unconscious form, and Elladan was easy as he shared the same hair color as his father Lord Elrond, a dark brown color. Elladan wore a sword at his left side while Legolas was dressed in his Mirkwood browns and greens and carried no sword only his bow.
“What happened?” Estel asked, as he ran over, and then crouched down next to the body.
“Found her in the river. She’s burning with fever,” said Elladan, glancing back at him. He held up a pouch. “Luckily the girl had pushed this off before she entered or the contents would have been lost.”
“Come, we need to get her to your father, Elladan,” Estel lifted her up into his arms. He turned to look at Legolas, who whistled for their horses to come to their sides.
After the horses arrived, Elladan took the female from Estel to allow him to mount his horse. He placed the female elf into Estel’s arms again and then found something even more shocking.
“She’s not an elf! Look at her ears. She’s not of our kind!” Elladan said, as he looked at them.
“Whether she is or not doesn’t matter, Elladan, she’s ill and needs your father’s healing,” Estel stated calmly, looking at him.
Elladan nodded as he knew Estel was right he leapt upon his horse. Legolas and he flanked Estel’s horse and the three of them went racing back to Rivendell as fast as they could without causing the woman to fall from Estel’s arms.
Elrond was in the second floor library when he heard loud shouts of help coming from the front. He hurried down the stairs and towards the front to see Arwen and a crowd of Elves around Estel who was cradling someone in his arms. The three riders dismounted with the help from the scouts and horse handlers.
“She’s ill my lord.” Estel said.
Elrond turned to Arwen. “Arwen, get the healing room prepared.” She hurried off, the then turned to Estel, still carrying the girl. “Estel, what has happened?”
“Ask Elladan and Legolas. They’re the ones who found her in the river.”
“She carried this pouch.” Elladan said, and handed him it.
The company had already started moving towards and healing room when Elrond opened the pouch and looked in to find a scroll. He withdrew it and saw the seal of the Steward of Gondor on it. He put the pouch in a robe pocket and began tending to the girl, still in Estel’s arms. He felt the girl’s forehead, “Get her to the healing room now! There’s not a moment to waste.”
Elladan move ahead, opening every door and clearing the way for Estel who had Elrond at side holding the girl’s head and Legolas just behind them trying to give the lord of Rivendell and his patient some room to breath. Arwen was in the room with the bed ready to accept the woman but Elrond ordered the bath to be filled with water immediately for the woman was going to be placed within it, as her fever was too high to get down with the towels that Arwen had prepared for her.
Elrond ordered Estel, Legolas and Elladan out of the room as Arwen started to remove the girl’s soaked clothing. Elrond was busy opening the letter when he heard a gasp coming from Arwen. “Arwen, what is it?”
“Father, look at all those bruises and marks. She has been beaten by someone on her way here,” spoke Arwen, looking at the marks on the girl’s back.
“The bruises are too old as are the other marks on her back.” replied Elrond, as he counted them.
“Father, who could have done this to her?” asked a puzzled Arwen.
“I do not know till I read the message from the Steward of Gondor. Keep her head above the water, Arwen. I’ll be back in a few minutes. Put those towels on her incase they come in to see her.” He stood up and walked towards the door.
Three forms fell into the room in a heap when he opened the door. Elrond glared at the two Elves and Man who got up and stared at their feet, refusing to meet the angry Elf lord’s glare. Elrond turned to Arwen as he saw her starting to put a towel into the bath to cover the girl’s body.
“You three should be ashamed…crouched against the door, like children …if you wish to see her, you can,” Elrond said, he turned away from them and went and sat in a chair. He opened the scroll and started to read. His eyes flickered over the opening words and realized that he should read this in private where they wouldn’t be able to see it.
Elladan, Estel and Legolas who were by Arwen’s side looked up when they heard a noise coming from where Elrond was; then he stood up and stormed out of the room. They all gave each other a puzzled look before turning their attention back to the woman.
“Will she be all right sister? The fever is high for her,” asked Elladan. There was much concern in his voice.
“You are very concerned about her, aren’t you brother?” asked Arwen, her eyebrow arched in delight.
Elladan could not look up at his sister as he whispered, “Well…we all are, sister,” spoke Elladan.
“We can only hope that this cold water bath will get the fever down, if not…well,” Arwen said, looking down at the young woman. She dried her hand and started to reach for her forehead when another hand bumped into hers. She glanced over to see Estel’s hand at the same place. Arwen blushed lightly as she started to pull her hand away.
Estel smiled as he gazed at Arwen before he placed his hand on the girl’s forehead to feel it. He started to cup his hand and pour water over her forehead. “The fever is still the same as it was before. If this is going to help her, I hope it does it soon.” he said quietly.
Arwen reflected on that silently as they sat on cushions and watched and waited for the fever to break. Arwen convinced them to go after Estel started to fall asleep against the tub. “Elladan, please get father. I wish to speak with him.”
A few minutes later, Elrond came into the room. Arwen asked, “What will happen if the fever doesn’t lower father?”
“Then, Mira will die and there’s nothing we can do about it,” said Elrond.
“Mira…is that the woman’s name, Father?”
“Yes, that’s her name. It was not the Steward of Gondor who sent her to me…but his son Faramir.”
“Faramir…why would he send her here?” asked Arwen.
“He didn’t state why just that she needed sanctuary from someone who would harm her if she was found.” Elrond said softly, as he poured water from his hand over Mira’s forehead.
Arwen went out and found couple of servants to get their meal for them and to have it delivered to the healing room, as they would not leave the side of the young woman alone. The two Elves didn’t leave the room for much of anything that night. The candles and the fire were the only sources light within the room as they worked hard to get the fever down. Arwen managed to awaken her for a few minutes so she could sip some broth and water but she would lose consciousness almost immediately.
Stay tuned the next chapter is coming.
