Outlaw
Summary: Partially inspired by Ned Kelly. “It was the
summer of 1880. Nothing was really unusual except for the weather - it was a
scorcher… I remember seeing him for
the first time, out chopping wood with his brothers – that’s when I knew I would
love him.”
Feedback: Please! I’d absolutely love it!
Disclaimer: I don’t own Orlando or Viggo or any other familiar
characters. *sniffle*
Archive: Just ask.
Warnings: Language, M/F and M/M
Author’s Note: This is my first serious fic so it
might get a bit rough on the edges but those can always be smoothed out in the
end.
I made a few changes to some of the characters, but only
slightly physically or age-wise. Most of this will be done in Orlando’s point of view, just so there’s no
confusion.
ENJOY!

Chapter One – “It was the Summer of 1880”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*
It was the summer of 1880. Nothing
was really unusual except for the weather – it was a scorcher – unusual for
northern England.
It hadn’t rained in days and my father was starting to worry that our crop
would dry out before it was ripe. My mother had just given birth and we needed
the money… more than usual. We were all what the nobles called “third class”,
which was really just a nice way of saying we were the lowest of the low, the
dregs of society if you will. But we really weren’t. Our little town was just a
bit down on its luck. Well, at least most of the town was. There were a few
choice men about, appointed by the governor, who handled us. They were usually
the “second class”. Not as low as the most of us, but not noble. Not by far…
but that’s just getting off my story now.
My
father sent me and my sister out, mid-August, to old Ian’s general store for a
sack of tobacco. I remember that day like I remember no other. It was sticky
hot out; our clothes were clinging to our legs and arms so badly we had stopped
trying to peel them back off. We had spent more time in the store than
intended, my sister Samantha stopping gossip with Ian’s daughter Liv while I
tried to cool off outside, splashing the slightly chilly water from the horse
trough onto my face. But as I looked up, my life changed forever.
I
remember seeing him for the first
time, out chopping wood with his brothers. His hair hung loosely around his
chiseled face, the limp strands stuck together in places with sweat. He had
taken off his shirt and, from the looks of it, he had the slightest bit of
sunburn starting on his shoulders. That’s when I knew I would love him. He felt
me staring – some people can just sense it, I guess – and he looked up. Wiping
a hand across his forehead to block out the harsh sunlight, a small smile
fluttered across his lips and he waved, just slightly, lifting his fingers a
bit. I raised my hand cautiously and waved back. That’s when it happened. I was
lifted up and dumped into the rain barrel, spluttering and cursing. I looked up
through the wet curls hanging on my forehead into the biggest blue eyes I knew.
“Sweet Jesus ‘Lij… did’ja have to do that?” I pulled myself up and swatted him
on the head. Looking over my shoulder, I noticed him, heaving a pile of wood onto his shoulders and walking away. My
heart fell into my feet.
A sharp
poke to the back of my head brought me out of my thoughts and back to reality.
Elijah looked down at me and grinned widely. “If I didn’t know any better mate,
I’d say you’d been starin’ at that bloke over there.” I really wanted to hit
him right then. “But I s’pose you was just checkin’ out the competition, eh?” I
raised an eyebrow. “Ah come on Orli, don’t you start bein’ thick on me! The
governor’s comin’ to town an’ you know what all the men are sayin’ ‘bout his
daughter.”
“Get off it Elijah. I ain’t gunna start winnin’ no
governor’s favor. And besides, how’d you know that they’re comin’ anyways?”
Elijah winked and wrapped an arm around my shoulder, leading me back into the
store.
“There’s talk of it all about. Samantha must have heard it
by now, so I can’t help but think that you have too… just haven’t been listenin’
close enough is all. But, bein’ your best mate and all, I thought I’d come and
tell you. Now, howsabout buyin’ me a soda water then, eh?” Elijah let go of me
and went searching through the endless shelves of items for what he wanted. I
sighed. My father would kill me if he knew I was spending his money on Elijah.
It wasn’t that my father didn’t like him, not by far… but Lij had this annoying
habit of never paying me back for anything I bought him.
“Orli!”
The squeal threw me more off balance than the arms that were flung around my
shoulders did and I toppled to the floor, a giggling mass of cloth, blonde
hair, and pale flesh landing hard on my chest. “Oh Orli, when I saw Samantha I
just knew you’d be here! I know your da doesn’t let her go out on her own no
more… not after what happened with Dominic! I just knew I’d find you somewhere
near!” I raised myself up onto my elbows and glanced down at the girl who was
still sprawled against me.
“Katie, why can’t you just stay with Liv and Sam and leave
me alone? I told you, I ain’t your sweetheart and I ain’t gunna be! Why don’t
you just ask Billy? I know he likes you.” I shoved her off of me and stood,
brushed myself off, and offered her a hand up… which she took.
“Oh Orli,” Kate sighed. “My daddy wouldn’t be too happy if I
went off after Billy. He’s a scoundrel, just like that friend of his, Dominic.
You saw how much trouble they can cause two springs ago when Dominic got
Samantha –” I snapped a hand over her mouth.
“You just keep your mouth shut Katie. You ain’t even
supposed to know about that!” She giggled and licked my hand. I pulled it away
and wiped it off on my still-wet shirt.
“Well, when you change your mind about me being your
sweetheart, you just tell me, ‘cause I’ll be waiting Orli.” A distant call of,
‘Katherine Bosworth! You get your little behind back home, you hear? Supper’s
out!’ finally got her away from me. “I’ll see you soon then Orli!” she battled
her eyelashes at me, hugged my sister and Liv, and then ran out of the store.
Elijah appeared
from behind one of the shelves, clutching a bottle of soda water in one hand
while he laughed madly. “Oh Orli, I love you!” he said, his voice pitched about
as high as Kate’s was. He batted his eyes and flung an arm around my neck,
spinning me around and planting a wet, sloppy kiss on my cheek. “You jus’ take
me away from this li’l old town an’ marry me!” he squealed.
“Ah, lay off Lij! I ain’t in the mood for none of your
chicken shit. Just pay for your soda and get gone. I’ll see you at the Hound’s
Head later on.” I snatched the bottle from his hands and plopped it down on the
counter. “Just one bag today, Ian. Da’s a bit short on cash ‘cause of the
drought.” Ian smiled at me, reached below the counter, and pulled out a small
sack of tobacco. I passed him a few coins and started out of the store, not
minding if Elijah or Samantha were following me.
I felt
a soft hand slip into mine and I looked over, noticing Samantha for the first
time since we left the house, smiling at me. “Sorry for all the trouble Kate’s
causing you Orli. I never knew what she’d get into after she met you, honest.”
I just squeezed her hand and nodded.
“It’s okay, really. There’s just somethin’ about the way
she’s always clingin’ to me. Gets a bit annoying after a while.” Samantha
laughed and swung our hands back and forth between us.
“Hey mate, I’m real sorry.” Elijah ran up behind me and
wrapped an arm around my waist. “I know you don’t like her an’ all. Jus’ tryin’
to get you to laugh is all I’m doin’. You haven’t laughed in a long while mate.
You ain’t your cheerful self no more.” I looked up into Elijah’s worried eyes
and sighed.
“Yeah, I s’pose not. Well, we’ll just get piss-drunk tonight
and forget about everythin’ okay?” I smiled up at him slung an arm around his
neck. “You wanna come up for supper? Ma’s makin’ up a stew… should be good.” I
guess I felt guilty for getting so mad at him earlier. But Elijah was right… I
was tense lately. I was worried right down to my worn-out shoes about my
family’s financial state and it was becoming more apparent each day.
Elijah
just laughed and patted me on the shoulder. “Sure thing mate. Me da’s been on
my case ‘bout ruinin’ the axe. I’m not really in the mood to be facin’ him
right now.” We all laughed and headed down the road. Once we were a bit further
down, I looked over my shoulder, squinting against the now sinking sun, and
focused in on the house where I had seen him.
There was no one outside that I could see and once again, my heart sunk down to
my feet.
