The
White Room
“Romana,
you will see why Prague
in the spring is not to be missed!” The
Doctor bounded out of the Tardis and stopped abruptly.
The
Lady Romana followed him out and looked around.
They were in a large white room; there were no doors or windows. There were chairs and couches scattered
around the room and a large table set out with food and drink. “Well, I must say I’m not impressed with the
view so far,” she sniffed. “I wonder
where we are.”
He
looked around. “It’s a waiting
room.” He made himself comfortable in a
stuffed chair and put his feet up on an ottoman. “So let’s wait.”
She
turned to look at him and shook her head in amazement; she could still be
surprised at his calm in the face of mysteries.
She walked over to the table and looked over the various plates of food. “Can I get you anything?”
Sitting
back in his chair, he considered for a moment and then said “Jelly babies. Yes, I think I’d like some jelly babies. Please.”
“Oh
Doctor, do be serious. Anyway, there
aren’t any jelly babies.”
“Look
again please.” He looked over at her and
smiled broadly. “I would really like
some jelly babies.”
She
rolled her eyes at him and walked along the table, checking the contents. She said “I’ve looked over the whole lot…”
and stopped. She reached over to pick up
a small white bag she had somehow overlooked.
She looked into it and brought it over to the Doctor. “Jelly babies,” she said, handing the bag to
him.
“Thank
you” smiled the Doctor, picking through the bag.
“You’re
welcome” said Romana.
His
smile widened. “I wasn’t talking to
you.” He put the bag into his pocket.
They
heard a soft ‘pop’. The Doctor looked
over in the direction of the noise, jumped up out of his chair and walked over
to the couch. He looked down at the
sleeping figure on the couch. “Countess,
how nice to see you again,” he said softly.
Romana
came over and looked at the figure on the couch. “So that’s the Countess. Maybe she knows what’s going on.” She reached down to shake her. “Countess, wake up.”
“Don’t
touch her!” he shouted.
“All
right, all right” said Romana, holding up her hands and backing away from the
couch.
He
reached down and touched the Countess’s forehead. “She’s so cold. Where have you been, Countess?”
Suddenly,
her eyes opened and she frowned as her eyes focused on the Time Lord. “Doctor?”
He
smiled widely, showing all of his teeth.
“Hello, Countess. Lovely to see you again.”
The
Countess swung her legs over and sat up on the couch, taking a moment to
collect herself.
“Where
is Bishop?” asked the Doctor.
The
Countess sighed. “Bishop is dead” she
said flatly. Then, taking a deep breath,
she stood and looked around the room.
“Where are we, Doctor?”
“Well,
we’re not in Prague,”
said Romana.
The
Doctor smiled and said “Countess, this is Time Lady Romanavoratrelunder; call
her Romana.”
Romana
looked at her with undisguised curiosity and said “Hello, Countess. The Doctor has spoken of you often.”
There
were four more ‘pops.’ The Doctor
recognized a few besides the Countess.
He had to repeat to them as they arrived “No, I didn’t bring you here;
no I don’t know why we were brought here, or who brought us here.” But while puzzled, and a few unhappy at being
kidnapped from their lives, in the end, no one could stay too upset at finding
themselves there; the chairs were comfortable and there was plenty of food and
drink.
The
pirate was the last to appear; he looked around the room, took everything in,
and without saying a word went to the table.
He checked the contents of the table carefully and picked up a bottle. He walked unsteadily to the last available
chair and plopped himself down; putting his boots up on the table, he opened
the bottle and started drinking.
The
room was quiet. Conversation had died
down after theories were discussed and discarded, and so all waited, for what,
they didn’t know.
The
pirate looked up at the Countess, who had been pacing and had stopped next to
his chair. “Rum?”
“Thank
you, no,” she replied with a smile. “I
never drink rum.”
“I
wasn’t asking if you wanted any; I was asking if you had any. This one seems to be empty.” He turned the bottle upside down to show her.
A
door that hadn’t been there a moment before opened and an older man in a white
suit came in to the white room. He
looked over everyone, smiled, and said “Oh good, you’re all here. I hope you’re all comfortable.”
Everyone
looked over at him and, recognizing his air of quiet authority, stood, except
the pirate. He looked up at the
Countess. “Is he God then?” he asked
softly.
“I’m
not sure,” she said, looking at the man in white; then she smiled down at the
pirate. “But I’d get my feet off his
furniture if I were you.”
He
returned her smile and stood, a little unsteadily, holding on to the Countess’s
shoulder for stability.
“Did
you bring us here?” demanded Romana, taking a step toward the old man in white.
“This
is the White Guardian,” said the Doctor.
“Show a little respect, Romana.”
The
White Guardian gave the Doctor a small smile.
“Yes, Lady Romana, I had you brought here.” Then addressing the whole group, he said,
“And I suppose you’re wondering why I’ve chosen to bring you here. I need you to find the six segments – “
“The
Key to Time!” exclaimed the Doctor.
“You’re reassembling the Key to Time!”
The
man in white sighed heavily. “Yes,
Doctor. The Key to
Time.” He took a deep breath and
began again. “The universe is threatened
with chaos and the Key must be reassembled.
The segments are scattered throughout the universe and you have been
chosen to find them.” He walked to the
table. “On this table, you will find…”
The
Doctor had followed him to the table and saw objects now on the table that
hadn’t been there before. “Tracer devices. How clever!”
“Yes,
Doctor.” He turned and addressed the
group. “The segments of the Key are
disguised. These will help you find the
segment you are seeking.”
“And
what’s the benefit for us?” All looked
around to see who would be so bold as to ask that question, the pirate looking
the most shocked of all.
The
old man in white only smiled. “The benefit? The stability
of all of creation isn’t enough for you?
Well then, the benefit to you is that after you find your segment of the
Key, you will find yourself where you most want to be.”
The
Countess’s eyes opened wide; her heart racing, she stepped forward, pushing
past a man dressed in black, and looked down at the objects on the table. “Which one of these is mine? I’m ready to go. Now.” There was only one place she wanted to
be. She’d been trying for years to get
back to her love; perhaps this was her chance.
“Ah, Countess. Your
eagerness to help is commendable.” He
looked down at the objects on the table then at her. “Yes, well, actually none of these are for
you. You will have help of another
kind. You must find the wizard called
Gandalf the Grey. He will help you find
your segment. You will find him in a
black tower.”
“Wizards.” She rolled
her eyes. “All magic tricks and
misdirection.” She took another step
toward the White Guardian. Impatiently,
she said “All right. Let’s go. Let’s go.
Gandalf the Grey, black tower. I’m ready to go. Now. Please.”
“All
right” he said and the Countess disappeared from the room. “Oh,” said the Guardian softly. “Perhaps I should have told her…well, never
mind.” He turned to the man dressed in
black. “Now you, Avon…”
The
Countess blinked and the White Room was gone.
She found herself on a wide plain; it was dusk and she could see a black
tower in the distance. She took a few
steps towards it and then, eyes widening, she fell to her knees. She closed her eyes. “Oh, oh, oh,” she whispered. She smiled as she felt the warmth in her
heart. She was back on Legolas’s world.
She
stood and considered postponing her search for the segment of the Key while she
looked for Legolas, even turning and taking a few steps away from the
tower. Then she stopped and reminded
herself that she had been trying for too long to get back to this world. Someone with the power of the White Guardian
could not be trifled with.
She
took a deep breath, turned and started walking back toward the tower. She would find this Gandalf the Grey, she
would find the segment of the Key and then she would spend the rest of her time
searching this world, looking for her heart, her love, her Legolas.
If
she’d been more aware as she walked, she would have been able to see through
the illusion of the grounds she passed through.
But her only thoughts were of Legolas and their eventual reunion. Before long, she was standing before the
entrance of the black tower, looking up at the tall figure in white coming down
the stairs to meet her.
