1. The
Riders of Rohan
The
Riders surrounded the four hunters, closing in on them, bringing their spears
ever closer to them. Suddenly, one of the horsemen, taller than the rest,
came through the circle of horses; looking down on them, he said "What
business do you have in the Riddermark? Speak quickly!"
Gimli,
always quick to answer a challenge, said "Give me your name, Horsemaster,
and I shall give you mine."
'Gimli
could turn anyone into an enemy,' thought the Countess and was grateful for the
graciousness of Legolas and the tact of Aragorn. As for her, there was no
Frodo here to deflect or distract any kind of suspicious looks that were sure to
come her way but the sun was bright and she could not help but keep her hood
up.
The
Rider came down from his horse and approached Gimli, saying "I would cut
off your dead, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the
ground." He made no attempt to conceal the contempt in his voice.
Quick
as thought, Legolas had drawn an arrow and had it in his bow, pointed at the
threatening man. "You would die before your stroke fell!" he
said. And at this, the Riders closed in, advancing their spears.
Aragorn
stepped before Legolas and dropped his hand on the arrow so it no longer posed
a threat. He addressed the tall soldier. "I am Aragorn, son of
Arathorn; this is Gimli, son of Gloin, Legolas of the Woodland Realm and his
Lady, the Countess. We are friends of Rohan, and of Theoden, your
King."
"Theoden
no longer recognizes friend from foe - not even his own kin." The
speaker removed his helmet and, at this signal, the Riders lifted their
spears. "Saruman has poisoned the mind of the King and claimed lordship
over these lands. My Company are those loyal to
Rohan and, for that, we are banished."
The
speaker walked by them inspecting the four of them carefully. Looking at
Aragorn, he said - "The White Wizard is cunning." Then,
looking at Gimli, he continued - "He walks here and there, they say..."; looking at the Countess - "as an old man,
hooded and cloaked." And then at Legolas - "...and everywhere
his spies slip past our nets."
"We
are no spies," said Aragorn. "We track a party of Uruk Hai
westward across the plain. They have taken two of our friends
captive."
"The
Uruks are destroyed," the Rider said flatly. "We slaughtered
them during the night."
Gimli
spoke up, hope in his voice. "But there were two hobbits! Did
you see two hobbits with them?"
"They
would be small," Aragorn explained. "Only
children to your eyes."
The
Rider cast his eyes downward and shook his head. "We left none
alive," he said gently. "We piled the carcasses and burned
them." He pointed off in the direction from which the Riders had
just come, indicating the plume of smoke rising in the distance.
Gimli
was stunned, his hope dying even as it had been born. "Dead?"
The
Rider nodded in the affirmative and said "I am sorry."
Legolas
put his arm on the grieving Gimli's shoulders.
The
Rider considered them for a moment, then gave a loud
whistle. He called "Hasufel, Arod, Medusand."
Three horses, a brown, a grey and a black were brought forward. "May
these horses bear you to better fortune than their former masters."
He gave them a last look and said "Farewell." He put his helmet
back on and remounted his horse. "Look for your friends. But
do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands." Then,
turning his horse away, he shouted to his men - "We ride north!" - and they rode off in a noise like thunder.
They
watched the Riders go and then turned in the direction of the smoke rising not
too far away. "I'll take Hasufel," Aragorn said.
"Legolas will take Arod and you, Lady, shall have Medusand."
The
Countess had already jumped up into the saddle on the black horse, delighted to
be riding again. "Medusand" she said, patting the horse's
neck. She loved to ride and it had been a long time since she'd had the
chance to do so. "Who shall take Gimli?" she asked. They
could see that Gimli had no great wish to even get near the horses.
"I
would sooner walk than sit on the back of any beast so great," he said
with a frown.
"But
you must ride now or you will hinder us," said Aragorn.
"Come,
you shall sit behind me, Friend Gimli," Legolas said. "It
is only logical that you should ride with me; this horse will take the
weight of the two of us, elf and dwarf, better than their horses will bear
their weight." The Countess smiled at Legolas as Gimli growled but
nodded his assent. Aragorn helped the
still clearly unhappy Gimli onto Arod behind Legolas and then he was up on
Hasufel and they were off.
They
rode to the still-smoldering pile of Uruk carcasses. They dismounted
and the Countess looked over the horrible stack in the field, then started walking around it, studying the ground.
Legolas only stood in his grief and said a small prayer for these dead.
Aragorn turned away; he could not bear to look at the pile of burnt bodies.
But Gimli took a deep breath and then waded into the awful pile, using his axe
to push through the unspeakable mass. He was determined that if it was
true, if Merry and Pippin were dead, that the hobbits would not be left to rot
with the Uruks.
The
Countess wandered around the pile of burned bodies. Sad at the fate of Merry and Pippin she
distracted herself by trying to read the ground. She
could make very little sense of it all; the tracks of the men,
horses, Uruks and the hobbits was a mixture that was very difficult for
her to read.
Gimli
pulled something out of the smoking pile and turned to Aragorn and
Legolas. Their hearts sank when they saw what he held up to show
them. "It's one of their wee belts," he said in a low voice.
Legolas
bowed his head and said "Let them find peace after death."
He then watched Orenin; she hadn't even looked up when Gimli made his
sad discovery.
The
Countess had knelt to study something on the ground; then she stood
and looked around more intently. She found what she was looking for and
knelt again to pick it up to study it closer as she heard Aragorn
give a great cry in frustrated anger.
"We
have failed them," Gimli said.
She
studied the ground again, frustrated. Useless.
She couldn't make sense of this herself and looked up. "Aragorn,
what does the ground tell you?"
Legolas
looked up at her frowning. Their hunt was over and they had failed, he
thought. Why continue this? He shook his head at her.
"Aragorn!"
she only said, louder, to catch his attention.
Aragorn
knelt down to study the ground, pain in his eyes. "A hobbit lay
here. And the other." He considered
the ground, trying to read what was there. "They crawled" he
said, almost crawling himself to follow the trail. "Their hands were
bound." He stood and walked, following the trail he saw, his
eyes never leaving the ground, walking toward the Countess. He found the
length of rope the Countess had found and dropped previously. "Their
bonds were cut!" He looked up at her.
She
held up another length of rope. "This one was not cut, but
untied."
Legolas
and Gimli were following Aragorn now, hope rising in their hearts.
"They
ran over here" Aragorn said, still walking slowly, eyes still
studying the ground but more sure of himself, more sure of the trail.
"They were followed." And now he was almost running.
"These tracks lead away from the battle..." he called back to them,
running now. He came to a sudden stop; "...into Fangorn Forest."
"Fangorn,"
Gimli repeated. "What madness drove them in there?"
They
stared into the thick, dark forest, pausing before taking their next steps into
the forest to follow the hobbits' trail.
