Title: A Fine, Fine Line
Author: CapriceAnn (With considerable help from Elladan, Elrohir, and Haldir)
Rating: PG
Characters: OFC, Elladan, Elrohir, and Haldir. Told from 1st person POV.
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything.
Notes: I got this idea for this fic after listening to “A Fine, Fine Line” off of the Avenue Q soundtrack. The flashback that I have at the beginning is really something that truly happened when I was about 8 years old.
Dedication: I wanted to dedicate this to the ladies of the JFA. Without their support I probably would not have been able to finish this. Although, it does leave off at a weird spot, do not fret. . .I meant to leave off there.

A Fine, Fine Line

. . . Someday it all will happen
And we will love with all our might
If only for this lifetime
I will be able to say it’s all right

. . . The rain was pouring outside my window. As I sat there watching it fall to the ground, I wished that I were twelve years old again; just so that I could run outside and play in it. But even at the age of twelve I wasn’t completely happy. To be happy I would have to be eight again. Back when the world was simpler, at least in my mind it was. The biggest problem that I faced at that age was when Coy and Vance replaced Bo and Luke. I can still picture in my mind the look of disbelief that I felt when I finally saw the episode where Bo and Luke came back to Hazzard County. . ~*~*~ flashback ~*~*~ I rushed to the phone and dialed my Grandma’s number. “Grandma, grandma, you are never gonna guess who is on tv!” I exclaimed. “Who, honey?” My Grandma asked me. “Bo and Luke are back, Grandma.” I smiled into the phone. “I know, child, I know…” My Grandma said. ~*~*~ end of flashback ~*~*~ . Just two months later, my world shattered. My Grandma died of a heart attack. I didn’t even get to say goodbye. For the last twenty years my life has been pretty much the same. It has been one big depressing event after another. As I sit here watching the rain, I can’t help but think it is all happening again. Only this time it was my Mother. My Mother died from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. She had suffered for the last fifteen years, and it really was a blessing that she had passed on. But still…she was my Mommy, and I want her back! Enough of this sulking around, Mom would not want that! Besides, she is in a far better place. I thought to myself as I got up and turned the radio to a different station. “As much as I like Annie Lennox, I really do not need to hear ‘Into The West’ again so soon.” I said to myself, thinking of the song that they had played at her funeral just a week ago. I decided then and there, that I was going to make myself feel better. I decided that the first thing I had to do to accomplish this was to take a nice, hot shower. I gathered a change of clothes, and headed off to the bathroom. After I was done and dressed, I called my best friend on the phone. “Dulcie?” “Yep, what did you need?” She asked me. “Pack your suitcase. I am kidnapping you for a week. I will be there in a couple of hours.” I told her. “Where are we going? Are you feeling okay?” She questioned me suddenly sounding concerned. “No, I am not fine, but I will be. I am going to drag you to somewhere that if it doesn’t make me feel better will kill me.” I stated. “And do not forget your passport.” I told her as I ended the phone connection, not giving her a chance to ask any more questions. I even left my cell phone off so that she couldn’t reach me. Two hours later I was pulling into her driveway, and she came out with her suitcase in one hand and her purse in the other. “Where are you taking me?” She asked as she put her stuff in the backseat of my car and climbed in. “Do you have your passport?” I answered her. “Yes, but where are we going? I hope I brought the correct clothes,” she again questioned me. In answer I just handed her a magazine that had a page bookmarked in the middle. Half an hour later we were parking the car and boarding a shuttle to take us to the airport. She still hadn’t asked me about the page in the magazine. I wondered how long it would be before she asked me about it. In fact, this was the quietest she had ever been around me. I got my answer a couple of hours later when the plane we were on was taxiing back from the gate for takeoff. “Why are we going to England?” She asked. “I thought it was the perfect thing to get my mind off of everything that has been going on. When I saw the ad in the magazine to stay at Professor Tolkien’s Home, I could not pass up the opportunity. I know that you are not that big of a fan, but I just can’t picture myself there with anyone else.” I told her. “Well, no one except for maybe an elf…” I winked at her. “Okay, I understand. I hope you realize I am missing Eric to go on this trip with you!” She scolded me as she laughed. “Eric will just have to deal with the two of us missing.” I laughed at her mock look of upset. “Besides, I called him before I called you, he said that he would see us the next time the team was in town.” We settled in to our first-class seats, and I was soon asleep. Almost eight hours later we were landing at Heathrow Airport. It took quite a while before we were cleared through Customs, but then we were finally standing outside. I couldn’t believe it. I was in London. As I glanced around, I finally spotted the shuttle that would take us to our destination. “You do realize there is a fine, fine line between genius and insanity.” My best friend continued talking while we got into the shuttle. “And I am reserving the right to determine which one this trip is until later.” I laughed as we headed off towards the Professor’s home. “It will probably be a bit of both. By the way, did I mention that when you go home at the end of the week, you would be going home alone?” “No, you did not mention that. Why? Are you staying here?” “Yes. I did not think that you would want to stay away from your job for three weeks, but with everything that has been going on I just wanted to get away for a while.” I answered. “Are you sure that you do not need me to stay longer than that?” “As much as I would want you to stay, I think I need to do this by myself.” I said. “If for no other reason than to prove to myself that I can do it.” We spent that week touring the estate grounds and the surrounding countryside. After that first week I found myself alone in a foreign country for the first time in my life. I felt lonely, but not alone. This is a good sign. I spent the next week riding this beautiful chestnut colored mare that I had befriended. I thought that she was the nicest horse in the stables, and her name was Fara. I had to giggle at that realizing it was a shortened version of Faramir. To this day, I have no clue what possessed me, but one morning, three days before I was to leave, I wore a long, split skirt to go riding in. As I was walking the dress did indeed look like a dress. In fact, it looked a lot like a dress that Éowyn would wear. I had packed a light lunch, and Fara and I set out for our journey on what promised to be a fine, beautiful day. About an hour into our trek, I spotted a nice place to have lunch. There was this huge, old oak tree on the bank of a creek. I looped Fara’s reins over one of the low branches as I settled in for my lunch. I guessed I had dozed off, because I was suddenly awaked by laughter. The sun was in my eyes, and I could just barely make out the three figures that were standing above me. “What do we have here, brother?” One of the two dark haired figures asked. “I do believe that it is a human female.” The other dark haired figure stated. I looked around, for the first time noticing that I was not in the same place that I had fallen asleep in. I breathed a sigh of relief when Fara nudged my shoulder. At least she had not abandoned me. “Where am I?” I asked. “You are near the borders of Imladris, my Lady.” The third figure stated, as he came closer into my line of sight. He was a beautiful specimen of blond delight. “My name is Haldir, and I am myself journeying to Imladris. Elladan and Elrohir,” he motioned towards the two dark haired beings, “are escorting me into the city. Would you like to accompany us?” I realized then and there that everything had been real. That somehow I had found the same doorway that Professor Tolkien had used. I was not about to pass on this opportunity. “Yes, I will come with you.” I said as I stood up and grabbed Fara’s reins. Close to an hour later, we had finally made our way close enough that I got my first glimpse of the fabled city. I was breathless, but I was also sure that this was just what I needed to put myself back in a healed state of mind. I smiled at Haldir as he grabbed my hand and we slowly made our way into the city. I was starting the newest journey of my lifetime, but unlike any before I was unafraid as this one came closer. As Haldir smiled back to me, I knew that everything would be all right. It was a perfect beginning to my new life. . . . . .. . .
