[Now it chanced that some of the woodmen of Brethil came by in that hour from a foray against Ores, hastening over the Crossings of Teiglin to a shelter that was near; and there came a great flash of lightning, so that the Haudh-en-Elleth was lit as with a white flame. Then Turambar who led the men started back and covered his eyes, and trembled; for it seemed that he saw the wraith of a slain maiden that lay on the grave of Finduilas.
But one of the men ran to the mound, and called to him: 'Hither, lord!
Here is a young woman lying, and she lives!' and Turambar coming lifted her, and the water dripped from her drenched hair, but she closed her eyes and quivered and strove no more. Then marvelling that she lay thus naked Turambar cast his cloak about her and bore her away to the hunters' lodge in the woods. There they lit a fire and wrapped coverlets about her, and she opened her eyes and looked upon them; and when her glance fell on Turambar a light came in her face and she put out a hand towards him, for it seemed to her that she had found at last something that she had sought in the darkness, and she was comforted.]
Such was the meeting of Nienor and Turambar forged with unspoken bonds, wrought by the servants of Morgoth to cast shadow over light. And from the shadows a pernicious lust rang out in their hearts; for they both greatly desired the other. Turambar’s care for Nienor was kind but purposeful of his thoughts. He saw the maiden, fair as the dawn and yet broken of spirit, beaten by weather, and dumbstruck by some evil spell. “Her loveliness is beyond the queens of the Edain. I will lift her up to that station deserved by such beauty and make her my wife”, Turambar thought. Nienor, though she spoke no words then, was keen to his thoughts and, offering her hand, Turambar lifted her from before the fire and into his arms. Then the furs and finery that had been draped around her fell away, leaving Nienor bare in the firelight. Without words she curled her arms, and leaned into Turambar’s embrace. She lifted her head and, with eyes flashing in the fire light, discovered the kiss of man. In spite of Turambar’s surprise, he yielded his heart and all else to the maiden, giving forth to each advance as was made. First Nienor remembered the warmth of the divine light and placed Turambar’s hands upon her breasts. He caressed her gently even as his sword lifted from its sheath. He unfastened his rainments and let them fall to the floor. There they stood a moment in the firelight, admiring the beauty of one another and yet not recognizing their shared features. Turambar was tall and broad chested, with thick arms and a bristled beard left untamed from his time in the wilderness, and a dark mane that fell about his broad shoulders. Nienor’s beauty was undiminished by the wear of her adventures; the firelight glittered against the long curves of her shapely body. Turambar kissed Nienor once more, and lifted her so that her soft breasts filled his mouth. For the sake of Turambar’s strength, he held Nienor aloft lightly with one hand as his other moved over her. Working slowly down her spine Turambar found that, although the fire had done its work, a great rain had come again to the maiden. Turambar lifted her high and perched her seat upon him. Then slowly, he pressed her down around him and she knew the greatness of him; for Turambar carried the heirloom of Hurin, king of men, and could command all by its virtue. Nienor was breathless as she felt Turambar sunder her wider than ever she was, and Turambar pulled her down, deeper upon him still, until their faces met again. Nienor’s mouth was agape though no words came. Instead she fell forward onto his shoulders with a cry of passion, before throwing back her head, wild haired and arms clasped behind his neck. Then Nienor was alive again as she had not been since the day in the forest. Again she pulled herself up along Turambar’s greatness and again she came down the great post to his kiss. And again she rose, and again she fell, until the fire grew dim and coals smoked in their hearth. At last Nienor had exhausted Turambar, but only after he soldiered a final rent which issued forth such as Nienor could not have known, and to her great amazement. Nienor was overwhelmed, yet compelled toward the surging white waters, as she imagined them in the rivers of her mind. Therefore she climbed down from Turambar and, seeing him clad only in firelight, went to explore the headwaters of his strange river. Again she found the greatness of Turambar, and took it to her lips as if a chalice of wine, and swallowed it. Turambar was utterly spent, yet Nienor’s conquest of thirst, at long last, profited. And then again the river surged, such of a melting mountain in spring; and Nienor was bathed in and drank of sweet waters, and at last her thirst was sated.
Then [Turambar took her hand, and smiled, and said: 'Now, lady, will you not tell us your name and your kin, and what evil has befallen you?']
