This not the First Chapter, only the Prologue but still crucial to the telling of this story. Enjoy.
A very awkward looking young dwarf – if you could even call him a dwarf, runs down the enormous emerald chambers of Erabor, toward the throne room. He is eager to see his father, Thorin son of Thrain, son of Thror – King Under the Mountain. This awkward dwarf prince-ling, is shorter then most dwarves with pointed ears and much larger feet. He has shoes that are specially made for him, even though he has no need for them. He wears shoes only to be more supportive of his dwarvish heritage. For he is in fact, half hobbit.
The story as it goes, was that in Thorin's travels he met and fell in love with a Hobbit girl, a cousin of Bilbo's. She died and after reclaiming the throne of Erabor, Thorin introduced their son as his heir. He also announced that he had no intentions to marry and that anyone who did not approve of his son should leave the Kingdom of Erabor as his decision was final. Luckily, Thorin was highly thought of by his subjects and the rulers of other lands. He had after all been cured of his Dragon Sickness and had agreed to have Erabor's wealth managed by the neighbouring kingdoms following the Battle of Five Armies. This meant that Thorin, was finally himself and the King at the same time. It also meant that Thorin's son was at first tolerated, but since he had come of age his character and strength of heart won over the denizens of Erabor. His name is Thranin.
Thranin kept running towards the throne room, dodging other dwarves as he went. He stopped, only when he saw Bilbo Baggins at the end of the hall. Shortly after the Battle of Five Armies Bilbo had been appointed the position of viser to Thorin, by well – Thorin. Bilbo had also been officially and unofficially Thranin's guardian whenever Thorin was busy – which was as one might expect of the King, a lot. Bilbo and Thranin are very alike in both personality and appearance. They have also been very close to each other.
A huge smile crept across Thranin's face when he saw Bilbo, who was deep in conversation with Balin and Dwalin. Bilbo had just returned from his yearly visit to the Shire, where he still maintains Bag End for his cousin Frodo who will one day inherit the place. Thranin was so overjoyed to see him that he ran down the hall towards Bilbo at top speed.
"BILBO!"He exclaimed just before he jumped into Bilbo's arms. Bilbo had just enough warning to catch Thranin but the impact knocked him over into his travel gear which cushioned their fall. Balin and Dwalin laughed loudly at the two them. "Bilbo! When did you get here? Have you seen my father yet? Did you bring anything back for me?" Thranin asked still sitting on Bilbo. Bilbo practically croaked his response.
"You... are just... as strong as... your father." He coughed when he was finished talking. Thranin immediately got off of Bilbo and helped him up.
"Sorry." Thranin said sheepishly. Balin spoke to Bilbo.
"We'll catch up later."
"It's good to have you back." Dwalin added. With that the dwarf brothers walked away leaving Thranin and Bilbo to themselves. Thranin gave Bilbo a hug.
"I missed you."
"I missed you too." said Bilbo. For a brief moment their remarkably similiar green eyes locked as they smilied at each other. Bilbo noticed Thranin's curly ash coloured hair had grown just past shoulders now. He looks so much like Thorin. Thought Bilbo. Thranin broke the silence.
"Have you been to see my father yet?"
"No, I just arrived and I have yet to take these items to my room. After that I plan to see him."
"We should go together. Here let me help with your things." Thranin helped remove Bilbo's bags and threw them over shoulder as though he were carrying a single pillow. Half-Hobbit indeed. Thought Bilbo sarcastically. He let out a sigh of relief once the items were removed after carrying them such a long way.
"Thank you." Together the pair walked through the maze of corridors to Bilbo's place side by side reminiscing along the way. Then Thranin suddenly became quiet. Just outside Bilbo's door.
"Thranin, is something wrong?" Thranin let out a deep sigh before looking Bilbo in the eye.
"Can... Can we talk?" Bilbo became troubled by the gravity of Thranin's tone of voice and looked at him with deep concern.
"Of course, come in." Bilbo opened the door and they both walked in, then he quietly closed the door behind them.
"Where do you want these things?" asked Thranin.
"Just on the floor in front of the bed is fine." Thranin put the things down and Bilbo sat on the bench in the corner of the room.
"Come and sit." Thranin sat down beside him. "What is it that's troubling you?"
"I'm sick of not knowing anything about my mother. I don't understand what the big deal is. I want to know... I have to know." Bilbo's mind started racing and spinning. I knew this day would come and I've wanted to tell him as badly as he wants to know. Bilbo sighed deeply.
"Thranin, I've told you before it's complicated. I, your father-"
"I'm going to be thirty one next month! Whatever it is you can tell me! I mean I don't even know her name! Father's friends are always whispering things about who I look like and nothing makes any sense!" It was all Bilbo could do prevent himself from looking as though he had just taken a dagger to the heart.
"Would it comfort you to know that the truth makes even less sense?"
"You know everything don't you?" Bilbo stood up and refused to make eye contact as he folded his arms.
"Yes... Every detail." Thranin stood up.
"Please tell me! I can handle it!" Bilbo turned back around.
"Are you sure?"
"I know that you're sleeping with my father, I'm sure I can handle this." Bilbo's face turned bright red. I wondered if he knew, but somehow wondering is much better then hearing him actually say it. Bilbo studdered a bit.
"A-are you mad? About m-me and your father that is?"
"No. You both seem to genuinely love each other, which is why I think you never moved back to the Shire after the Battle of Five Armies." Bilbo let out another sigh.
"Good. Because..." Bilbo stopped himself from continuing and instead said "You know that I love you right?" Thranin smiled.
"Sometimes I think that you think I'm your son... I love you too Bilbo." Thranin got up and gave Bilbo another hug – but it was much longer then the last one. Bilbo rested his head a little on Thranin's as tears welled up in his eyes. This secret has been killing me for years. He has to know, we need to tell him. Thranin let go of him and saw how emotional he was getting. "Bilbo?"
"Before I agree to tell you, there are things you must know. It is a long story. It does not make any sense and there are things that will honestly seem downright impossible. It will be hard to hear and very confusing. You may even be upset with us – I don't know. But it is the truth and nothing but the truth – you have to believe us." Thranin already seemed confused and full of questions.
"Okay?" Bilbo covered his face with his left hand for a minute before removing it.
"I will speak to Thorin about it and we will be begin telling you about what happened tonight, I promise. Now go see him, I need a moment to myself." Bilbo gently sent Thranin out of the room and closed the door behind him. Bilbo leaned his back into the door and began to cry. He sobbed so hard that he sank to floor until he was sitting on it. After all these years, I don't know what to feel. He thought. Happy, sad, afraid, angry? Or hopeful? Yes... I think that will do.
Bilbo walked in into the throne room from the centre. Thorin and Thranin were standing close together. Thorin was smiling at his son with his arm on Thranin's shoulder while they talked. Thorin interrupted the conversation when he saw Bilbo. The lovers' eyes met and they could not hide their feelings. It was written on both their faces how desperately they missed each other's company. The bond was so deep that it was clear that they had forgotten that they were ever individual people. Thranin was beginning to wonder how his father could have ever been with his mother when he was so infatuated with Bilbo.
"You're back." said Thorin as he smiled.
"Yes." Bilbo paused. "I'm home now." He smiled back at Thorin. Thranin began to feel as though he was intruding on what was supposed to be a private moment.
"I'm going to leave now, as I'm sure both of you have many things to talk about." Thranin then started along the hallway out of the room. When he was out of their sight, Thorin grabbed Bilbo's wrist and dragged him into one of the side corridors. They stopped suddenly and Thorin took a good look around to make sure that no one was watching. Seeing that they were "finally" alone, Thorin backed Bilbo into one of the pillars and threw himself into Bilbo's lips. At first, Bilbo had been so surprised that his eyes remained wide open in shock. Then he melted into his lovers lips and closed his eyes as he wrapped his arms around Thorin, It soon became clear that Thorin could not contain himself as he showered Bilbo with kisses moving from his lips, to his neck and then finally his chest. It was all Bilbo could do to keep his head clear, focused on the most important conversation that he and Thorin might ever have.
"T-Thorin...! We shouldn't do this here... Besides we have to talk..." Thorin ignored Bilbo and kissed him again - anything to get him to change the subject.
Suddenly the chamber became as dark as night, the loud sound of thunder rolling in was all that could be heard echoing off the walls. That - and one other thing. The voice of a stern wizard deep with wisdom from his travels and much knowledge. It spoke in a way that would strike fear in the hearts of even the strongest of people.
"I'D LISTEN TO YOUR HOBBIT IF I WERE YOU, THORIN OAKENSHEILD." Thorin turned around to find Gandalf the Grey, towering over the both of them. Bilbo and Thorin were both shocked and terribly embarrassed despite the many times that Gandalf had caught them before. "Just what did you have planned for an empty hallway at this time in the evening?" Gandalf was extremely unimpressed with the location in which he had chosen to "properly" great Bilbo. Any one of the citizens of Erabor could have seen them. Not that it would have mattered much anyway, considering most of the people of Erabor already knew and simply chose to ignore the situation. Thorin and Bilbo were generally well-liked, their positions within Erabor also helped to maintain the "social silence". Their relationship was - in a matter of speaking, the white elephant in the room.
"Ravishing my Hobbit, is that bothering you Gandalf?" At this point, Bilbo just wanted to fling himself over the balcony from embarrassment.
"If its any consolation, I was in the process of getting him to stop." Bilbo sheepishly looked at Gandalf with a face that said I'm sorry I let this happen, but you know this is not my fault, besides how do say no to the King Under the Mountain? Gandalf looked back at him returning his look with another that said That is not an excuse. You wanted him to keep going. You should know better. Bilbo gave up on continuing their silent argument when he realised that he couldn't win. He just turned around, unwilling to look Gandalf in the eye. Thorin looked back and forth between them.
"Did both of you just have another silent conversation?"
"So how is Thranin doing I've heard he's growing up to be a fine Hobbit... I mean Dwarf." He paused. "Person." Thorin rolled his eyes. Wizards will be wizards. He thought.
"Why are you here?" asked Thorin.
"I'm delivering the fireworks for Thranin's birthday celebration next month."
"Its a bit early for that isn't it?" Thorin raised an eyebrow. Gandalf sighed.
"Okay, I came for a visit." Thorin seemed surprised.
"A visit?" Thorin asked.
"Yes, I feel responsible for the leader and the burglar of the former company so I thought I better stop by and make sure that the dwarves of Erabor hadn't over-thrown their government because their King is deeply involved in a forbidden interracial romance and his son is only half dwarvish." Bilbo turned around and re-entered the conversation with sarcasm.
"Thanks for that Gandalf, I feel so much better about my part in this."
"Its too late for that now, Master Burglar. We have to live with these major life decisions."
Bilbo thought to himself for a moment. Major life decisions. Didn't I have a major life decision to discuss with Thorin? Right, Thranin!
"I hate to interrupt our happy reunion, but I really need to talk to Thorin about something, very, very important, so if you'll excuse us." Bilbo took Thorin's hand and dragged the King to his chambers. As Bilbo dragged him, Thorin maintained a huge smirk on his face.
"I think this is the first time that my burglar has tried to steal me away, should I be excited?" Bilbo rolled his eyes.
"Thorin, I was telling the truth - we seriously have to talk about something very important."
They arrived at the royal chambers, entered and closed the door. Thorin sat at the end of his bed and sighed.
"Alright, what is it?" Bilbo paced back and forth anxiously before suddenly turning around and blurting it out.
"Thranin wants to know the truth about his mother and he won't take no for an answer." Thorin covered his face with his hand as a sign of stress.
"What did you tell him?" Bilbo sighed.
"That I know the truth. That the truth is complicated, impossible and... Difficult to believe. He said he'd rather hear it anyway. I did warn him that the situation is unusual and messy."
"Do you think we should tell him?"
"Yes... I think its time he knew. We knew this day would come."
"All of it?"
"Yes, all of it, otherwise it is not the truth."
"When?"
"I promised him that we would start telling him tonight." Thorin seemed unimpressed.
"I made no such promise, but you may tell him. Let me know how it goes." Bilbo was upset.
"Alone...?"
"Bilbo, I think he needs to hear this from you." Thorin is right. Thought Bilbo. This is my story to tell.
"You're right." Thorin got up and kissed Bilbo.
"You'll be fine. He already thinks you're related anyway. He loves you and I love you." Bilbo's face turned a vibrant shade of red. Right. Bilbo thought to himself. I can do this. I'm the only one who can do this.
Bilbo walked through the maze of corridors that was Erabor, muttering to himself until he stood outside Thranin's door. I can do this. It will be alright. He has to know. It's been so unfair to lie to him like this the whole time. Bilbo knocked quietly on his door. Their was no answer. He just wanted to turn around and go back to Thorin's room. The only thing that encouraged him to knock again, was the love he had for Thrainin. So he knocked again, this time louder. He waited patiently, hearing Thranin's distinct footsteps from the other side of the door. Thranin opened the door only about four inches and peered outside to see who it was.
"Bilbo?" Thranin opened the door all the way. "Did you speak to my father?" Bilbo looked down nervously.
"Yes. May I come in?" Thranin let Bilbo inside where they both sat in Thranin's sitting area. Bilbo was at one end of the room and Thranin at the other. For a while they both remained silent, Thranin could sense how uncomfortable Bilbo was. He had always been able to deeply sense Bilbo's emotions. He wanted to ask questions, but he couldn't bring himself to push either. Bilbo was actually the first to break the silence.
"I have no idea how to tell you this. I have always wanted you to know the truth." Bilbo lifted his head up and looked Thranin in the eyes. "It has hurt me to lie to you. It has hurt me that you feel hurt. But everything we did, we did to protect you and your father. You cannot tell anyone under any circumstances the truth. You may know the truth, but you may not discuss it with anyone other then myself, Thorin, Gandalf, Tauriel, Kili and Fili. Understand?"
"They knew this whole time?" Bilbo frowned and softly said
"Yes." He paused. "I still have no idea how to tell you this."
"How about at the beginning? It sounds like this is quite the story." Bilbo smiled.
"Very well then." Bilbo cleared his throat before he continued. "My Dear Thranin, you asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know about my adventures. And while I can honestly say that I have told you the truth, I may not have told you all of it."
