10. Endings
When
Legolas woke from his sleep, he knew Orenin was gone. He felt the emptiness, the coldness in his
heart. He looked up at his father and Amdirion, standing next to his bed. For a moment, his grief was too great for
expression. He sat up and put his hand
over his heart. “Ada! She’s gone!
Oh, Ada!”
Thranduil
looked down at his son, sympathy for his son in his eyes. “Yes, she’s gone.” He sat in a chair next to the bed. “I thought to use the water of the enchanted
river to keep you and your lady safe. We
were successful - Stoker was defeated and the Doctor will take him back to his
world. The Time Lord’s power is
great. I begged him to allow her to
remain here. But there was nothing I
could do.” He ignored Amdirion’s
look. “The Doctor has taken her away. I am so sorry, Legolas.”
Too
restless, Legolas found he could not stay in the palace and left to go live in
his refuge, the forest. Thranduil tried
to dissuade him from leaving but Legolas told his father “The Valar brought her
to me. They will bring her back to
me. When she is with me, I will return.”
“She
is not coming back, my son.”
“I
cannot stay here, Ada.”
The
Doctor stood at the Tardis console, studying the readings. He didn’t look up as the Countess came into
the control room. “Bring the Master back
to Gallifrey later,” she said. “You have
to take me back.”
“I
can’t.”
“You
don’t understand.” Slowly, as if trying
to explain something to a child, she repeated “You have to take me back. I need him.”
Her voice broke and she could only whisper. “He needs me.
Please.”
The
Doctor raised his head to look at her, his eyes filled with sympathy. “I can’t take you back. I’m so sorry, Countess,” he said gently.
She
glared at him then, her temper rising.
She didn’t believe him; she had seen him do the impossible too many
times. Suddenly, her self control
deserted her. She rushed at him, her
eyes blazing, and grabbed him by the lapels of his vest, pushed him against the
wall and shouted at him. “Take! Me!
Back! Now!” punctuating her words by slamming him against the wall with every
one.
The
Doctor did not struggle against her, did not fight back at all.
Sarah
Jane ran in, shouted “Stop it!” and tried to pry the Countess away from the
Doctor. “Stop it! Stop it!
He’s tried.” In a gentler voice,
she continued. “He offered the Master
his freedom if he helped find the way back.
They tried. We can’t get
back.”
The
Countess looked up at him, then released the Doctor’s
vest. “I’m sorry Doctor.” She put her hand on her heart; it hurt
her. “Thank you for trying.” She leaned against the wall and slumped to
the floor; her back to the wall, she closed her eyes.
“I’m
so sorry Countess,” he repeated gently.
“Will
you be all right?” asked Sarah Jane, looking down at her.
She
didn’t know the answer to that. “Oh
Legolas,” she whispered. She looked down
at the ring on her finger and felt a new stab of pain. She wished she could cry,
could find some release from the pain in her heart. She could do nothing. Legolas had told her many times they must
have faith in the Valar; she wished she could have his faith, instead of her
knowledge. She felt helpless, not something
she was accustomed to feeling. But the
hopelessness she also felt was indeed familiar.
What had she expected? What could
she have expected? She was what she was
– her curse would follow her, ruining any hope for peace, for happiness, she
found.
The
Doctor looked down at her for a moment longer then went back to the Tardis
console, confirming their approach to Gallifrey. He felt sadness stealing over him. He knew she would leave him soon.
Shortly
after Legolas left the palace for the forest, Amdirion received a letter from
Lord Elrond of Rivendell, inviting him to join his Houses of Healing. King Thranduil was happy to give his leave
for Amdirion to go.
A
few years after Stoker’s departure from Mirkwood, two elves sat at a small fire
close to the northern edge of the forest
of Mirkwood.
Silinde
looked up as Nolemenel’s face tensed. He
stood and looked out into the forest. “Something out there? he asked.
Nolemenel’s face relaxed.
“Something good, I think.”
After
a few more minutes, a voice came out of the forest. “May I share your fire?”
“Mai
Govannen, Strider. Welcome.” said
Nolemenel.
The man came out of the
forest, into the small clearing and stood in close to the fire. “Mai Govannen,” he said to Nolemenel with his
hand over his heart.
Nolemenel
returned the gesture. “Water? Food?”
“No, thank you, Nolemenel.
Actually, I’m here looking for an old friend.”
Silinde
gestured off into the forest. “Our mad
prince is singing to the stars again tonight,” ignoring Nolemenel’s
disapproving glance.
Strider
stared at him for a moment, then said “Hannon le” and walked in the direction
Silinde had indicated and soon found Legolas.
He came forward and sat down, his back to a tree, listening, until
Legolas finished his song.
“Mai
Govannen, Legolas.”
Legolas
was still looking up at the stars. “Mai
Govannen, Aragorn. What brings you so
far north?”
“I
had heard rumors that the strange prince of Mirkwood had finally gone mad. I did not believe it until I saw him singing
to the sea.” His eyebrows raised. “With his back to it.”
Turning
to him and smiling, Legolas said to him.
“I do not sing of the sea beyond the Grey Havens, but that sea” looking
back up to the night sky. “That is the
sea on which my love sails.”
“I
don’t understand. Is she dead?” asked Aragorn,
with a frown.
“No.” After a moment’s thought, Legolas said “I
would know if she was dead.” His face
darkened. “She is somewhere out in those
stars, Aragorn. My wife was taken from
me and must wander those stars alone.”
He sighed and looked down at the ring on his finger. “And now my days are empty; my nights
lonely.” Looking over at his friend,
Legolas smiled and said “Get your pipe and pipeweed out. I will tell you the story.”
He
told Aragorn the story, including the nature of his beloved. When he had finished, he
smiled and asked Aragorn “Now, do you think am I mad?”
“Your
story is strange enough.” Aragorn smiled
at him. “But I have never believed you
were mad, Legolas.”
Legolas’s
face hardened. “Sometimes I feel I will
go mad with rage that she was taken from me but I try to remember – The Valar
brought her to me.” Legolas sighed and
turned his face back to the stars. “I
pray that they will bring her back to me.
I must have faith in the Valar.”
