2. Arrival
Legolas
heard a rhythmic whine in the night forest and followed the sound to a small
clearing at the edge of Mirkwood. He stayed back in the trees, keeping still,
observing everything. He knew the
descriptions Stoker had given of his pursuers and when Legolas saw the
strangers, he knew they were the ones that Stoker was seeking, the ones he was
running from.
They
came out of the blue box - first, the Doctor – very
tall, curly-haired, dressed in red, wearing an impractically long scarf; Stoker
had said he was clever and not too dangerous, “though he might talk you to
death.” Next out was his female
companion, Sarah Jane, dark hair to her shoulders, wearing a one-piece outfit
with jacket over it; Stoker had said she would be no trouble at all. The third and last one out of the blue box
was the one called the Countess, dark hair cut short, dressed in black;
according to Stoker, she was the most dangerous of the three. And upon seeing her, Legolas felt his heart
flip. He smiled to himself and whispered
“Orenin. At last, at last.”
The
Doctor had been receiving messages from Gallifrey
urging him to contact them. It was a
matter of principle for him to ignore messages from Gallifrey
but, at the last, a message came from his old teacher and he had changed his
mind and contacted Gallifrey. He had received information from the High
Council regarding the Master and providing coordinates for the Master’s
location. To explain his about-face on
the matter, he told the Countess and Sarah Jane the Council could not leave the
Master where he was; they would have to find him and bring back to
Gallifrey.
The
Doctor delighted in teaching and in sharing his knowledge and both Sarah Jane
and the Countess had traveled with the Doctor long enough to have learned
much. Even so, they had been alarmed
when he told them they’d be materializing ‘on faith.’ The Doctor had smiled widely at their
reaction to this and explained. “Really”
he said, “it’s a hidden world. We cannot
see it. Look at those readings. We’ll have to trust the coordinates Borusa gave me.”
Since Sarah Jane and the Countess could not make sense of the Tardis
console’s simplest controls, they’d had to take the Doctor’s statements on
faith.
Outside
the Tardis, they looked around and listened to the too-dark, not-quiet-enough
not-quite-normal forest. Sarah Jane
cleared her throat nervously. “I don’t
think we…Perhaps we should wait until it’s a bit
lighter. We don’t know where we
are. And where do we start looking for
him?” asked Sarah Jane.
The
Doctor looked around, getting his bearings. “We’re lucky to have gotten this
close. I wonder how the Master found it;
it had to be accidental.” He frowned. “It’s difficult to get a bearing on a hidden
world, like trying to hit a moving target,” he explained.
The
Countess was pacing, impatient to start moving.
“We’re wasting time, Doctor. He
probably already knows we’re here.” She
stopped pacing and looked at the Doctor reproachfully. “You should have let me kill him when I had
the chance.”
He
chose to ignore that. “We’re on the edge
of Mirkwood forest.
If I remember correctly, there is a small village in that
direction.”
The
Countess snapped to attention when she heard that last. She was pleased to be out of the Tardis; she always
felt closed in when in the Tardis despite the infinite dimensions of the
inside. She was also mindful of her
hunger; they’d been traveling in the Tardis for days and she needed to be
outside, needed to hunt. “Stay
here. I’ll go see what I can find.”
Sarah
Jane and the Doctor exchanged glances.
He cleared his throat. “Yes,
we’ll be here. I need to do a little
research on this world. It’s been some
time since I was here last.” They went
back into the Tardis.
Unaware
she was being followed, the Countess soon found the sleeping village at the
edge of the forest. She smiled with
satisfaction. The village might be
small, but it was large enough to have a guard patrolling the streets at
night. He stopped and peered at her as
she approached him.
“What’s
your business here? What do you want?”
She
smiled and looked into his eyes. “A little information, sir?”
On
her way back to the Tardis, she went to spy on the camp of raiders the village
guard had mentioned. He’d told her they’d
asked about any strangers that might have appeared in the village. She stayed back in the trees observing the
camp; the men were beginning to wake.
She saw that they held several captives, kept in a makeshift wooden
cage. She looked up to the sky; she
should get back to the Tardis. Time was getting short as the sun would be up
soon. She was walking back when she felt
an impulse to turn aside to a clearing.
Time
seemed to stop. Someone was standing
ahead of her in the clearing, watching her.
Her breath stopped in her throat, her eyes widened; she didn’t move. Move?
She hardly dared to breathe, let alone move. Her first thought upon seeing him was ‘He is
made of light.’ Tall, slender and
graceful, the young man was the most beautiful creature she’d ever seen. He gave her a smile, dazzling in its beauty,
and said “Orenin.”
She couldn’t help but return it while she studied him; she said softly “Beautiful.” He was dressed in green, had long blond hair,
braided at the temple and he carried a bow.
She felt a pull coming from him, a force trying to pull them together.
Noises
from the raiders’ camp caught her attention and she looked back in their
direction. Turning back to the beautiful
young man, she saw that he had disappeared.
“Oh, no.
Don’t leave me” she whispered.
The Doctor would know something about the creatures of this world and
she was suddenly impatient to get back to question him. She ran back to the Tardis, unaware that she
was still being followed.
As
she reached the Tardis, Sarah Jane and the Doctor were just coming out of
it. She answered their questions
impatiently; she was still preoccupied with the golden vision. She told them about finding the village and
all the guard had told her about the village and the raiders.
Suddenly,
Sarah Jane said “What is wrong with you?”
“Nothing”,
said the Countess, taking a deep breath and turning to the Doctor. “I saw someone in the forest, Doctor. More beautiful than
beautiful.” She felt her face
flush with embarrassment at that.
The
Doctor smiled and said “Perhaps something a little more descriptive?”
She
took a deep breath to start again. “He
looked human, had pointed ears, and, Doctor,” finishing with a smile the Doctor
had never seen on her face in the many years he had known her, “he was made of
sunlight!”
“Ahh”, said the Doctor, eyes widening with
understanding. “You saw one of the
elves. They are the first and fairest of
the sentient beings of this world.” He
sighed. “It’s very sad; there are only
four places left for them here. Did you
speak to each other?” he asked her, his eyes narrowing.
She
tried to remember. Had they? “Yes…no…I don’t…”
The
Doctor told her “The elves can be very dangerous”.
“No,”
smiled the Countess. “He didn’t seem so
to me.”
“Well,
there’s dangerous and there’s dangerous.”
He looked at her searchingly.
“Elves can have a strong effect on humans.” He looked up at the sky; it was almost day. “You’d better go
in and get some rest. Sarah Jane and I
will try this village ourselves.”
“Yes,
Doctor,” the Countess said softly, going into the Tardis,
her mind already back on the elf. “Good
day Doctor, Sarah Jane.”
“We’ll
be back before nightfall,” the Doctor shouted back as he and Sarah Jane started
walking off in the direction the Countess had come from.
Sarah
Jane, stopped, turned back and stared at the closed Tardis door. “Good grief, what’s wrong with her? I’ve never seen her like that!”
“No
doubt,” said the Doctor, “I wonder…”
He’d known the Countess for many more years than Sarah Jane had and he’d
never seen the Countess like this.
“Let’s go see what we can find out.”
Legolas
had watched the beautiful stranger in wonder.
He’d followed her to the village and he’d witnessed her attack the guard
after she questioned him. After she
finished with the guard and left for the forest, he’d quickly examined the
guard. She’d left him alive and sleeping
peacefully. He knew the history of his
world and knew that last of the creatures like her had been killed thousands of
years before. Still he could feel no
fear of her, only curiosity. Now he could
believe in the truth of Stoker’s stories.
Legolas waited until the Doctor and Sarah Jane were well
away before dropping out of the tree he’d concealed himself in. He walked over to the Tardis and put his bow
at the side of the Tardis, removed the belt holding his weapons and put them
with the bow to the side of the Tardis.
He tried the door, not surprised that it was locked. He knocked on it. “Lady, please,” he said gently. No answer.
He frowned in puzzlement. She had
to hear him; the blue box was so small she had to be just on the other side of
the door. “Lady, please. I am unarmed.
I won’t harm you.” He tried the
door again and then, in frustration, banged on it with his fist. And, too preoccupied with trying to get to
her to notice them come out of the forest towards him,
he heard the men too late and turned, only to feel the dart in his arm, see
them come toward him, and then see nothing.
