3. Following the Elf
The
Countess woke from her sleep with a start.
‘Something’s wrong’ she thought.
She dressed quickly and went to the Tardis control room. No Doctor, no Sarah Jane. She knew it was still day but she felt a sense
of urgency; she couldn’t wait for the night.
She retrieved her cloak and weapon and left the Tardis. The Doctor had a definite penchant for
trouble so she decided to look in on the camp of the raiders before trying to
find him at the village.
She
soon caught up with the raiders; it was not difficult as they hadn’t traveled
far. She found the Doctor and Sarah Jane
in conversation with several of the raiders; it had been arranged that they would
show the Doctor and Sarah Jane the way to the palace in Mirkwood; their friend
was waiting for them there and most anxious to see them. The Doctor seemed pleased enough to go with
them and if Sarah Jane looked a little apprehensive, well, that seemed to be
her natural state sometimes.
The
Countess heard the Doctor tell the leader of the men “Another? The Countess? I don’t know what you mean. It’s only the two of us.” She would keep her distance and follow the
Doctor; she would make sure no harm came to him. Sarah Jane and the Doctor walked off with a
few of the men as their escort. She was
about to circle around the camp to follow them when she heard a disturbance at
the other side of the camp. She turned
to look and froze.
Another
group of the bandits came up to the leader; they were dragging the elf she had
seen in the forest. He was
semi-conscious; he was trying to get to his feet but kept losing his
balance. She heard one of the raiders
say “Put him in the cage with the others.
This trip may be profitable after all.
We found Stoker’s friends and we’ll get that reward and now we have an
elf. He’ll fetch a very good price - if
we can manage to get him to the auction.”
“We’ll
need to move quickly,” said another.
We’ll need to get far enough from this place if we’re going to make
money from this one.”
The
Countess turned to watch the Doctor and Sarah Jane leave the camp with their
escort. She decided she would not follow
them after all - the Doctor was going where he wanted to go; he seemed happy
enough; the ones with him weren’t threatening him; she knew he could take care
of himself – and then caught herself up with a laugh. Was she trying to fool herself? It was all only rationalization, all
unimportant to her. The Doctor and Sarah
Jane were being brought to the Doctor’s greatest enemy and she didn’t
care. She had to stay with her elf.
Considering
the size of the camp, the raiders moved surprisingly fast. They traveled on a plain, going away from the
forest and the Countess had to stay far back, sometimes losing sight of
them. It was never difficult for her to
find them though; she was only an adequate tracker but their trail was easy to
follow. She followed them as they
traveled during the day and then, when they stopped for the night, she would
move in close enough to listen in on their talk; she heard them talking about
how much they would get for their captives in the auction, anticipating that
the elf would sell for more than the rest of the captives put together.
After the camp would stop and all were settled
in, she would find a place to hide, to watch and listen to the elf. They would ask the elf to sing; his voice was
low and lovely. Once, while listening to
his song, the thought came to her: ‘it
would be heaven to lie with such a creature’ and her eyes snapped open in
surprise. She didn’t know whether she
was shocked that she could think of heaven or of lying with him. She mocked herself for her feelings - ‘yes,
it would be nice to settle down with him wouldn’t it.’ But she couldn’t stop thinking of him, his
voice, his face.
She
knew she should be helping the Doctor.
And she was puzzled at her inaction.
How much time would she just waste this way? Days passed and, before long, they were
almost at their destination and there was no more time. She decided to go in and take the elf out of
his prison.
In
the darkest part of the night, the Countess approached the only unsleeping
guard quickly and quietly. Startled, he
got up and pulled his knife but with a quick movement, she disarmed him and
threw the knife into the campfire and grabbed the guard by the throat.
Out
of the night she heard “Do not kill him, Orenin.” She smiled and closed her eyes at hearing his
voice. Then, opening her eyes, her smile
fading, she told the man “Look at me.”
She captured the guard’s frightened eyes. “You are sleepwalking. Go back to sleep”. He went to his place at the fire, picked up
his blanket and did just that.
She
walked over to the cage. The elf was
standing, hands on the bars of the cage, watching her.
She
cocked her head, studying him. “You
don’t seem surprised to see me.”
He
smiled at her. “I’m not. You have been following us.”
“How
did you know that?”
He
only smiled wider and did not answer her .
“What
is your name?”
“My
name is Legolas”
“Legolas”
she repeated carefully. “Well, Legolas,
stand back.” She unfastened the weapon
from her belt and switched it on.
Legolas
stepped back when he saw the blade of light and heard the low hum; he was so
amazed at the weapon she carried, he almost didn’t stop her in time. He stepped forward, placing his hands on the
bars of the cage’s door. “No,
Orenin.”
Raising
her eyebrows at him, she switched the weapon off and re-fastened it to her
belt. She studied him for a moment. “You cannot wish to be a slave,
Legolas.”
“I
have given my promise not to escape if they do not harm these others,”
gesturing to the other, still sleeping captives. She looked up at him sharply and drew a quick
breath but decided she wouldn’t tell him she didn’t care about the others. He did, so she must.
Smiling
at her, he said “You will have to think of something else, Orenin.”
He
saw her look up to the sky. Knowing what
she was, he knew she was thinking she would have to find a place to hide from
the sun but he didn’t want her to leave him just yet. “You seek your friends but they are not
here. They were taken to Mirkwood to one
named Stoker. There is a price on your
heads.”
She
smiled wryly. “Well, it’s not like
that’s never happened before.” Her smile
faded. She might be worried about the
Doctor’s situation but she was still unable to feel guilt about her decision to
abandon them and follow the elf. “If
this Stoker is who I think he is, we’re supposed to
capture him and take him back to face the justice of his people. Again.” She sighed.
“I should be helping the Doctor but…”
She looked up at Legolas. “They
say you’ll arrive in the city tomorrow and you’re to be sold at auction the day
after that. “Perhaps I need to buy myself a guide.” She smiled up at him. “Do you know where Stoker is in
Mirkwood?”
He
returned her smile. “I would be happy to
help you. I have never trusted him.”
“Your
instincts are excellent, Legolas. The
Master is very dangerous. Well
then…” She laughed at herself - still
trying to think of something to say to him, to stay with him. She looked down at his hands resting on the
bars of the cage and took them in hers, turning them over to look at his
palms. She saw the pattern of calluses
on them and frowned in concentration.
“I’ve seen this pattern before.”
Legolas
looked puzzled. “Pattern? Of what?”
“I
have a friend who can tell anyone’s story by reading their hands, the wear on
their clothes, the dirt on their boots…” she trailed off, still holding his
hands.
“Look
at me, Orenin; let me see you,” Legolas said gently.
She
pushed the hood back over her head and ran her hand through her hair in a
nervous gesture. She put her hands back
to rest over his; already she loved the feel of his skin. She looked up at him.
He
stared into her eyes. Beautiful. “I have never seen brown eyes before.”
She
said “On my world, brown eyes are the most common; blue eyes less so. And your eyes…” She thought ‘Never
anything like the blue of those eyes. On any world.’ She
smiled. “Your eyes are old for one so
young.”
He
laughed. “I am older than I appear.”
Her
heart sang to hear him laugh. She felt
her guard go up; she was afraid of his rejection, that
he would see too much. She forced
herself to break away from his gaze and looked at the sky again. Already sunrise? Lighter and lighter; too
soon.
“They
will be waking soon” Legolas said. “You should go”.
She
nodded and after a last look at him, she ran off to find a place to rest for
the day. And to think
of him.
