4. Together
The
Countess woke at dusk and left her hiding place. She went to the shop of the city’s dealer in
precious metals and stones that she’d located the day before.
She
stood outside the little shop and removed her diamond solitaire earrings. She held them in her palm and looked down at
them for a few moments; they were the last things she possessed from her world,
her time. Then, taking a deep breath,
she entered the shop. There were several
large men standing on guard in the store, watching her carefully; she walked
over to the old gentleman seated at a table working on some jewelry. He stopped work when she came into the shop
and gave her his full attention. “How much
will you give me for these?” She handed
him the earrings.
He
looked at her warily then turned his attention to the earrings. “Hmmm...these are
very nice. Very nice
indeed.” He examined them closer,
then said “2000
for the pair.”
She
sighed. If what she’d overheard at the
camp was accurate, that wouldn’t be nearly enough to buy Legolas. “Well, thank you anyway. Not today.”
She looked over the table and saw a small leather bag. “May I?” she asked the jeweler, pointing at
the bag.
He
picked the bag up. Quickly, he said “Of
course. Please. Take it.” He was glad that this was the only thing she
was taking. “And if you change your
mind…well, come back anytime.” He took a last look at the earrings, then put
them into the bag and handed the little bag to her. She nodded her thanks, took the bag and left
the store, smiling as she sensed their sighs of relief at her departure.
The
Countess walked down the street, just wandering aimlessly for a while. She kept her eyes on the ground, bending over
every now and again to pick up a small stone to place in the bag. She was thinking about Legolas
and wanted to see him again; she was not surprised to find herself down at the
marketplace at the town’s center where the men were setting up their camp. She watched them work for a short time but
didn’t see Legolas and soon left. She would have to move about during the day
tomorrow and would rest for now.
The
auction was set to begin in the late morning but the crowd began to gather
early in the morning to look over the merchandise soon to be sold. The raiders wanted to unload the elf first
and would begin with him. They had been
uneasy while they held the elf, even after his promise not to escape; they knew
it would be wise to get the best price they could for him and let his new owner
worry about keeping him.
Legolas listened to them talk and shook his head
impatiently. His promise not to escape
from these men was discharged by their arrival in the city and now he was
waiting for his lady to appear. He
sensed she was close.
They
lined up their captives, Legolas at the head of the
line. They pushed him up the short
flight of stairs and out onto the platform.
There was a gasp and a buzz rose up from the crowd.
“Yes,”
said the auctioneer. “Today we start with something most unusual.”
Legolas’s eyes swept over the crowd, only half-listening to
the bidding. By the time the bidding had
reached 8000, the only bidders left were a painted old woman surrounded by
pretty young men and a painted old man surrounded by pretty young men. Just then Legolas
spotted the black-clad Countess, the hood of her cloak up over her head, as she
announced her first bid. “8500.”
The
auctioneer, pleased to have a new bidder, encouraged the bidding higher but
only managing a few more rounds before the other two dropped out and he
announced “sold to the lady in black.”
The
Countess was shown back to the seller’s tent, where she was to pay for her
purchase. She passed the guards at the
entrance, and, once inside, lowered her hood.
Legolas was brought in; she did not trust
herself to look at him but walked over to the seller at his table.
The
seller looked up at her and said “Well?”
She
pulled the small bag out of one of the pockets in her cloak, looked through it
to pick out the earrings and handed them to him. “I’m told these are worth 2000”.
“2000?! And?” He looked at
her suspiciously. “Where’s the rest of
it?”
She
looked through the bag again, then stopped and looked at him. She said “Look at me.” Looking into his eyes, she asked him “Can you
trust your men?”
He
stared into her eyes for a few seconds, then, not looking away from her, he
said “You two. Out.” The ones who had brought Legolas
in to the tent hesitated but after a few seconds, they left the tent.
She
handed the bag to the seller and said “I’m not sure of their value here. Please take as many as will pay for
him.” Keeping eye contact with him, she
said “They’re lovely aren’t they? Where
I am from, the red ones are called rubies, the blue, sapphires and the green,
emeralds.”
He
poured the bag of small plain stones into his hand, not looking at them, still
staring into her eyes.
Legolas’s eyebrows rose, looking from the stones in the
seller’s hand to the Countess. Not breaking
eye contact with the man, she gestured with her hand to Legolas
– quiet. She told the man “Take what
stones will meet his price; we’re wasting your time.” She then looked away from him, breaking eye
contact.
The
seller poured the stones from his hand back into the bag, picked up the
earrings and dropped them into the bag and put the bag in the metal box at his
feet. “I’ll take the lot and you may
consider yourself lucky I don’t kill you and resell him. Now out before I change my mind.”
She
and Legolas turned quickly and were halfway to the
tent exit when “Stop!” Eyes wide, they
turned around. “You want him
branded?”
“No. No thank you, sir,” she said smiling at Legolas. “That won’t
be necessary.” They left quickly.
They
were walked quickly through the city, going back north. Legolas was curious
about his lady’s nature and the extent of her abilities. And he was thrilled to be with her. “You put
a spell on him,” Legolas said.
She
looked at him sharply. “Yes, and it
won’t last long. Unless men are
different on this world, they’ll check that bag soon and find they’ve been
cheated of your price. Then they’ll come
after us and I’d like to be in those woods.
Can you move faster?”
He
could, of course, and it wasn’t long before they were out of the city and at
the edge of a forest. She breathed a
sigh of relief. She was not in danger;
the day was cloudy and her cloak would protect her, but traveling during the
day tired her. They moved farther into
the forest. She had to push herself but
even she had her limits. She was getting
very hungry.
Legolas led the way.
He noticed that she had slowed down once they had reached the forest. She was bending and breaking branches; he
thought it peculiar but then realized what she was doing. She was leaving a trail.
It
was not long before Legolas stopped and turned back
to her.
The
Countess stopped. “What is it?”
He
said “Can’t you hear them? They are
coming.”
She
lowered her head, concentrating. Yes,
she could hear them now. “Well, that
didn’t last as long as I’d hoped.” She
couldn’t meet his eyes and wondered if she was successful in deceiving
him. “Stay here” she ordered. Seeing his reaction to that, she changed her
tone. “Please stay here. I can fight them but I can’t fight them and
worry about you. Please.” He frowned but nodded his acquiescence. “Stay here” she said again, then ran back to
face their pursuers. Smiling.
She
found their pursuers quickly enough. She
watched them for a while, deciding she wouldn’t need to use her weapon and she
would leave the tallest for last. They
were stopped, making sure they were still on the trail of the thief and their
stolen property. In the end, they
couldn’t put up any kind of resistance to her.
She moved in and broke the necks of the two closest to her before the
others could even draw their weapons.
Moving under the clumsy first strike of one, she used his weapon to kill
the fourth before killing him with it. Leaving the tall one.
“Look
at me,” she told him. She moved toward
him, allowing her hunger to wash over her.
“Be still” she ordered. She
grasped him by his arms, lowered him to the ground and climbed onto him. Then, with a quick move, she bit into his
throat, allowing his blood to flow into her mouth, sucking it down her throat,
feeling his strength going into her. He
struggled, punching at her at first, then slapping ineffectually at her, his
feet kicking, but she held him tight and took his strength. He moved slower and slower, was more and more feeble, until, finally, he was still.
She
drank until his blood stopped its flow, then sat up and finished him by
breaking his neck. She knew it would
take more than one incident of infection to be effective but wouldn’t ever risk
creating another of her kind. She got up
slowly, brushed herself off and took a deep breath to calm herself. She searched the dead men. She put two containers of water and some bread
and fruit into one of their packs that she had emptied, then
left to go back to Legolas. Her heavy feeding was making her very sleepy
and she needed to rest.
Legolas had not been worried for her but was still glad to
see her return. Since their talk during
her visit to the camp, he had considered revealing he knew what she was but
decided against it. He wanted her to
confide in him, to trust him. He heard
her approach and looked up at her from where he was seated, his back against a
tree.
“Thank
you for waiting here,” she said. “You
didn’t need to worry; there were only five of them.” She smiled at him, delighting in his return
smile. “Here,” she said and gave him the
pack with the water containers and food.
“Thank
you,” he said. He was both hungry and
thirsty. Thinking to keep him weak, his
captors had not given him much water or food.
It hadn’t bothered him too much; he’d gone without for a longer period
of time without too much distress. He
looked up at her and gestured at the food and water. “You?”
“No,
thank you; you have it.” She looked away
from him. “I couldn’t wait. I’ve already eaten.” She sat down and leaned back against a tree
and watched him eat and drink what she’d brought him; she felt slightly
ridiculous at finding so much pleasure in just watching him. He was so beautiful; she didn’t want to stop
watching him but she was so sleepy.
“We should go soon but I’m so tired.
I need to rest.” She had rescued
her elf; now it was time to go back and find the Doctor. She yawned again and lay down on the
ground. She tried to stay awake but the
effect of her heavy feeding overwhelmed her and she closed her eyes in sleep.
Legolas watched her sleep.
He briefly considered going back to find their pursuers but decided
against it. He knew what he would find
there.
When
she woke, Legolas led them back toward Mirkwood, not wanting to reach home too soon. He wanted to have time enough to think. And time enough just to be
alone with her.
