5. Joining
While
they walked, they talked. Legolas told her the story
of the Master’s arrival and how he had quickly inserted himself into his
Father’s court. He also told her much
about his world and its history.
The
Countess told Legolas about traveling the stars with
the Doctor. She described worlds the
Doctor had shown her since he’d taken her from her world. She described their struggles against the
Master, confirming every suspicion Legolas had ever
had, making him more determined to get that creature away from his Father and,
now, his world.
After
only a few days they were back at Mirkwood forest. Legolas saw her
relief at stepping into its darkness.
She could sense the dark creatures there but apparently they could sense
her also and the Countess and Legolas were not disturbed as they traveled.
They
soon found the Tardis and while the Countess knocked
on its door and called for the Doctor, Legolas retrieved his bow, quiver and
white knives. She looked up in
surprise. “You’re an archer! Of course!
I knew I’d seen that pattern before.”
She smiled at him. “Do you want
to see something interesting?” She
reached up to the top of the door and took down the key she knew was
there. She unlocked the Tardis door and opened it.
She stepped into the Tardis’s control room,
followed by Legolas.
His
eyes opened wide as he looked around the room.
“This cannot be.” He ran back
outside, circled the Tardis and then rejoined the
Countess inside the Tardis.
“It
is larger on the inside than it is on the outside,” he said, wonder in his
voice.
“Oh,
yes” the Countess said authoritatively.
“It’s called a Tardis. It’s the ship that takes us traveling to the
stars. Tardis
means time and relative dimensions in space.”
He
looked at her and smiled. “And what does
that mean?”
She
thought for a minute and then shrugged.
“It means it’s larger on the inside than it is on the outside,” and
returned his smile.
Legolas frowned and said “And Stoker has his own Tardis? That is how
he came here? Why?”
The
Countess nodded. “He has his own Tardis and that is
how he got here. She said thoughtfully
“The Doctor called this world a hidden world and was surprised that he found
his way here. As for why, he only has
one motivation for what he does and that is power.”
Legolas cursed and she laughed, bringing him up short. “If you are not from this world, how is it
you can understand me?” he asked with a puzzled look.
“Oh
that,” she smiled at him. “It is a gift
of the Time Lords. I can understand and
be understood in any language. I can’t
speak or read another language though, unless I am taught.” She paused and looked at him. “That’s curious. You’re the first person in all the time I’ve
traveled with the Doctor who has asked me that.” Her smile faded and she became more guarded
as she realized she was getting too close to this beautiful creature. She had noticed with a touch of uneasiness
that she would automatically turn to him, always want to know where he was, always want to watch him.
She
sighed and said “Well, the Doctor and Sarah Jane aren’t home. Let’s go and see what kind of trouble they’re
in.” They left the Tardis;
after locking it, the Countess replaced the key and they resumed walking.
While
Mirkwood was dark enough that they could travel at
any time, they would stop and rest and while they did, Legolas would watch her
and think. He was drawn to her and he
wanted her trust. And
more. He did not know who she
was; she would talk about the Time Lords, the Master, other worlds but she did
not tell him much of her past. He didn’t
care; in the end, he knew it truly did not matter to him.
Why
she was here was never in question for him though. He had known it when he saw her that first
time in the forest. The Valar had
brought her to him. Content to travel
with her, to talk with her, just to be with her for now, he could feel his
spirit reaching to her. He knew she
sensed it and was fighting it and sensed her growing uneasiness around
him. He had noticed with dismay that
she was silent and becoming withdrawn with him.
And he knew himself well enough; he was becoming impatient with waiting.
She
had wakened while he was watching her.
He gave her his smile and said “A few more nights’ travel and we will be
there.”
They
would come to their destination too soon.
The
Countess thought ‘A few more nights? How
can that be?’ She sighed in
exasperation. It shouldn’t have taken
this long to reach the Doctor. What was
Legolas up to? She couldn’t fear him but
she was becoming uneasy with him, with her reaction to him. She wanted to curl up next to him, to feel
his heat. But she hated the thought of
the harm she could do to this perfect creature.
So
they walked and she watched him. He was
beautiful and she loved to look at him but she couldn’t, she wouldn’t allow his
beauty, grace and sensual presence overwhelm her. It was becoming more and more difficult. She was trying to conserve her energy by
resting often but she was getting hungry.
As they traveled, she had sensed life in the forest, larger animals
worth the hunt; they kept well away from them now.
They
could not get to their destination soon enough.
They
stopped shortly after dawn. Legolas
disappeared into the trees, reappearing a short time
later with some fruit and the water containers he’d refilled. “Please have these.”
She
knew she would find it unsatisfying but she did drink little of the water to
please him. But the
food? “No, thank you; I’m not
hungry,” she lied. She sighed and leaned
back against the tree, closing her eyes to him.
It was getting so dangerous, so hard to resist him. She sensed him coming over to her and opened
her eyes to see him kneeling before her.
He
took her hand. “I’ve not seen you eat;
you hardly drink any water. It is
affecting you.”
She
looked into his eyes, so filled with concern, so beautiful, so tempting. She reached out with her other hand to touch
his cheek, smiling. She wouldn’t hurt
him. What was the harm … then she
snapped back to herself. She pushed him
back and jumped up. “Please. You must leave me alone right now.”
He
landed on his back, confused, frustrated and unhappy with her rejection of
him. “You must know that I would never
hurt you.” He sat up slowly.
She
watched him sitting there, looking down at the ground. She was sorry but not surprised to have
brought that look to his face; he was too beautiful to ever be sad but she was
a curse. She noticed something, and,
smiling at him, reached out with one hand to the back of his head. “You’re not so perfect after all; your braid
is coming undone.” She knelt by him and
touched his loosened back braid, moving her hand to caress his ear, feeling
warmth going from him to her fingers, spreading through her body. He was so beautiful, so exquisite. She stroked his ear, observing with delight
his eyes opening wider, his blue eyes staring into hers, as still as the forest
around them. No No NO No
No. She jumped
up. “I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.”
“There
is nothing to forgive.” He smiled and
reached a hand out to her. “Do not
apologize; you did not hurt me. Please.”
She
backed away from him. ‘No but I was
going to’ she thought, ‘and still might.’ She turned around and went to a tree away
from him, took off her cloak, laid it out on the ground and then dropped onto
it. She was hurting, truly hurting
now. Her hunger was getting so strong
and Legolas’s presence was so disturbing.
She tossed and turned and could not get comfortable. She would face him but couldn’t stop staring
at him; she would turn away from him but it hurt even more not to see him. She could feel his pull and fighting it was
becoming death.
Legolas
watched her toss and turn. He knew her
spirit was tearing itself apart trying to fight his. Finally, she seemed to settle in to rest,
facing away from him. He moved toward
her on his hands and knees, as graceful as a cat.
She
did hear him though and, raising herself on her elbow, she turned to him. “What?” she whispered.
“Shhh, Orenin.” He put his hand on her shoulder, pushing her
gently back down to her side, then snuggled in close
to her, curling against her. He draped
his arm over her, placing his hand just under her breasts, fingers splayed on
her abdomen, over the seat of her spirit, bringing the sensation of
warmth. He was pleased to feel her sigh
deeply and slowly relax into him. His
spirit located hers and hers responded.
Resting his head on his other arm, he pulled even closer to her, fitting
together perfectly. He smelled her hair
and enjoyed the feel of her against him.
Nothing he’d experienced in his life compared to this, to the feel of
her next to him. His body began
responding to her closeness. ‘No better
than an elfling,’ he thought, smiling to
himself. He willed himself to calm; the
time for that would be soon enough. He
could wait now. There was no need to
rush this.
She
felt his warmth go through her, from his hand on her abdomen, spreading outward
throughout her body, bringing peace to her heart, relaxing her, so restful, all
unease dissipating, even her hunger fading.
She could feel his heartbeat, soothing, deep, constant
as the river’s flow. As she dropped off
to sleep, smiling, finally peaceful, she thought ‘I was right; it is heaven.’
A
few hours later, he felt her stir.
“I
need to shift” she said softly.
He
rolled onto his back and to his relief and delight, she turned to him and
snuggled into him, twining his leg between hers, placing her hand over his
heart. “What did you do?” she asked.
“Nothing
we did not want” he said softly. No,
that wasn’t quite right. “Nothing we did
not need. Go back to sleep, Orenin. We do not need to leave yet.”
“Mmmm,”
she said sleepily, already drifting off.
Legolas
smiled. They would rest tomorrow in a
cave he knew, one of many such places he kept and used when he stayed out in
the forest. Soon, they would have to go
back to the palace and he would help her find the Doctor, help her fight
Stoker. But for now, he was content to
feel her close, both of them filled with peace.
He’d finally found his heart and it would not be long before they would
completely belong to each other.
