7. Back to the Palace
Only
half-dressed, Legolas knelt to look down at his sleeping lady. He had stopped dressing to watch her
sleep. Her eyes were closed and he found
that so endearing he could not stop himself.
He leaned over and kissed her forehead.
She
opened her eyes, smiling at him in lazy recognition. “Beautiful Legolas.” She narrowed her eyes in puzzlement. “Legolas, why are you dressing?”
“I
will go back to the palace and find my father.
I will see what is happening and find your friends. You will wait here for me. I will come back for you.” He began to rise but she reached out to grasp
his wrist.
She
frowned. “Oh no,
Legolas. You are not going back
there alone. I’m going with you. You can’t know how dangerous the Master
is. Please, Love.” She reached up to stroke his ear and smiled
at him.
He
returned her smile. “You would distract
me, Orenin?”
“Stay
with me now. We will go.” She whispered. “Later.” She pulled him down to her.
“I
want to move.” She was panting, so
close.
“Not
yet, Orenin,” and Legolas made another small movement.
Her
eyes flew open to see him, his body sweat-slicked over her. “Ahhhh, please,
Legolas,” she gasped.
“No,
Love.”
“Oh
please” she whispered. “Legolas, please. I
need…”
“I
know what you need.” He smiled down at
her; she was so beautiful when she begged.
He moved again and she arched her back, crying out his name in her
release.
Once
they finally decided they could delay no more, they dressed and were on their
way to the palace. After giving her
careful directions to a hidden way he knew into the palace, he walked in to the
halls and into his father’s presence in the throne room. There were many elves there and they all
crowded around Legolas, all expressing their relief at his safe return. He quickly gave them all his thanks, but he
wanted to talk to his father.
“My son, my son.” Thranduil tried to conceal his emotions but Legolas could
see the relief in his eyes and feel it in his embrace. “Stoker, you were wrong. You see?
My son has returned safe.”
Stoker
came forward, noting that Legolas’s smile faded as he saw him. “Congratulations, Prince, on your fortunate
escape from those slavers. And from that creature.
May I?” he asked, raising his hand, but Legolas had already raised his
chin. He knew what Stoker was looking
for.
“You
will find nothing,” said Legolas with a sneer.
Stoker
contented himself with examining Legolas’s throat. “Your escape from that monster is most
fortunate,” surprise on his face.
“Monster?” Legolas
could not keep his dislike for Stoker out of his voice or face. “I don’t know what you are talking
about.”
“Don’t
you, Prince Legolas?” Stoker replied with his unpleasant smile. “But you knew
what I was looking for.”
Legolas,
embarrassed that he’d given her away, lost his temper and couldn’t stop
himself. “She is no monster!” Then, trying to control himself and change
the subject, he said “You seem remarkably well-informed about what happened to
me.”
“I
have my sources.” Lowering his voice so
only Legolas could hear him, Stoker said “You’ve managed something that is most
difficult. Have I miscalculated who fell
under who’s spell?”
With
some careful editing, Legolas told them of his adventures as a captive. Finally he had a chance to ask after the
Doctor and Sarah Jane.
Stoker
said “A pity I was away when they were brought here. The King sent them away from the palace. They would have had a different reception had
I been here.” He looked over at Thranduil. “I told
you enough about the Doctor and his friends.
I am surprised that you trusted them.”
Thranduil chose to ignore that and told Legolas he’d sent
the Doctor off on a fool’s errand to negotiate an end to the low-grade but
persistent border conflict with the dwarves.
“He volunteered to go and I was happy to see him leave. Talk, talk, talk; let him talk their beards
off.” Thranduil
had not missed his son’s smile and evasion when he spoke of the one who had
rescued him. “Where is this lady,
Legolas? Let me meet her and give her my
thanks for your safe return.”
“Yes,”
said Stoker. “Where is she, Prince
Legolas? The King will be most
interested in meeting this creature.”
Legolas
hesitated. He hadn’t forgotten the
reward Stoker that had offered for the capture of the strangers and that the
one for Orenin had been the largest amount.
“Legolas?” Thranduil’s eyes widened.
“Answer me.”
“Father,
I…” Legolas’s voice trailed off.
“No
matter, your Majesty” said Stoker. He leaned
over and spoke softly to Legolas. “You
cannot protect her. She will come for
you. I can wait.”
Legolas
replied, as softly “She told me all about you, how you work your evil, the
worlds you destroy, why they pursue you…”
Legolas suddenly stopped; he could feel her presence.
Stoker
smiled in delight. “She’s here, isn’t
she?”
Legolas
could not stop himself from looking around.
She felt close.
Stoker
looked up, then stood and looked around the hall. He shouted “Countess! Show yourself! He waited for a moment, watching Legolas
carefully. “I know you are here!” No response.
“Very well” he said softly to himself.
“We’ll do this the hard way.” He
pulled a black and silver cylindrical object from his belt and pointed it at
Legolas. “I’m losing patience,
Countess! Show yourself or your pretty
prince will die!”
Thranduil went white; he had seen the effect of that
weapon. He rose from his throne. “Stoker, what are you playing at?” he
thundered.
“Stay
very still, Thranduil and the next gift I give you
will be your son’s life.” He
shouted “Countess, I’m waiting!” He frowned.
“Very well. One…two…”
There
was motion on the upper hallway and the Countess jumped down over the second
floor rail down to the floor level and moved swiftly up the great hall toward
them. She moved through the great hall,
past Legolas, and grabbed the Master by his shoulders. “So then, Master, your pleasant mask is gone? All masks off then!” and allowed herself to
change to the killer.
Thranduil got a full view of her change and gasped in
horror, raised his hand and fell back against his throne.
Even
though Stoker had seen the Countess like this, it had never been directed at
him. He went still, so startled that he
forgot the weapon he still held. “The
Doctor has said you were not to kill me,” he said in a low voice.
“The
Doctor is not here,” and gave him a shake.
‘Oh this would be good,’ she thought.
‘And only justice.’
Speaking
as quickly as he ever had in his long life, Stoker said “Before you kill me, do
you know what the bomb I have planted here in the palace will do to this
world? To your pretty
prince?”
She
stopped herself with effort. She calmed
herself, her eyes still showing darkness and danger barely held at bay. “You’re bluffing.” Hoping against hope.
He
smiled. “You know I am not. You’ve seen how I work.” He knew he had the upper hand now. She was back to herself. He could see the defeat in her face. He shrugged her hands off him.
Thranduil, eyes still wide, still staring at the Countess,
sank back onto his throne.
“Good”
smiled the Master. “Now, Countess, come
with me. We have work
to do.”
“No”
said Legolas angrily, moving between the Countess and the Master.
“Legolas!” Thranduil’s voice
shook. He jumped up and grabbed Legolas’s
wrist, his heart racing. “Do not
interfere!”
She
turned to Legolas. “I tried to tell you,
Love.”
In
a commanding voice, the Master said “This way, Countess” and she followed him
out of the hall.
