In the Treasury
The
next days were a nightmare for Legolas.
The Master, for that is what he would have all call him now, had issued
orders to Thranduil to relay to his people: No one was to attack him or Mirkwood would be
destroyed. No one was to leave the
palace or Mirkwood would be destroyed.
No one was to interfere with his work or Mirkwood would be
destroyed. He allowed Thranduil to remain on his throne and so he did, doing the
only thing left for him to do, think without ceasing.
There
was one exception to the new restrictions on movement the Master had
issued. The Master took great delight in
allowing Legolas his freedom; he knew there was nowhere for Legolas to go. Legolas was tied to the palace by his love
for his love. The Master always mocked
the emotion but invariably found it useful.
He sent Legolas out to hunt; “she’s going to need what you bring her,”
he told Legolas.
Legolas
would go out to hunt and bring the blood of animals back and feed Orenin. He could see the shame in her eyes for him to
see her need for what he would bring to her; he would whisper to her over and
over again – she was what she was and it didn’t matter to him.
The
Master had brought her to his chambers, put her on the bed and cut into her; he
was stealing her blood. Legolas would
shake with fury as he’d watch the Master torment the Countess; she moaned as he
would pull open wounds that would constantly heal. “She heals too quickly, Prince Legolas. I need to keep the blood flowing” he
explained. Turning to Legolas, he
studied him and smiled. “You wish to
kill me, don’t you? Many have
tried.” He looked down at the
Countess. “She wishes to kill me. Yet, I am still alive.”
The
Master laughed when he heard the Countess urge Legolas to find the Doctor while
he was out in the forest. It didn’t
worry him. The Doctor could do
nothing. He had failed with many
vampires back on Earth; with one vampire, he could succeed in this Middle
Earth.
Legolas
had only truly hunted the first few times he’d gone out from the palace. He knew the path the Doctor would take
returning from his visit to the lands of the Dwarves and would go out to search
that area. Out in the forest, finally,
Legolas heard them from far off and ran toward them, thankful that dwarves were
incapable of moving with any kind of stealth.
Thinking
Legolas a messenger from Thranduil, the Doctor began
to tell him of the success of his negotiations.
“That is not important!” Legolas cried out, causing murmurs to come from
the dwarves. He told the Doctor all that
was happening in the palace; he finished the story and then asked “Why is he
stealing her blood?”
“I
don’t know,” said the Doctor quietly. He
thought for a moment. “This
bomb. We need to find this bomb
first. And quickly
before the Master gets farther in his plans.”
“I’ve
been thinking on that” said Legolas. “I
believe I know where you will find this thing.”
The
dwarves who were escorting the Doctor and Sarah Jane were insulted that their
assistance was refused and that Legolas would not allow them to proceed. The Doctor, not inclined to agitate the
distraught elf further, had to use his diplomacy again and tactfully turned the
dwarves back to their homeland.
After
the dwarves had disappeared into the forest, Legolas led the Doctor and Sarah
Jane along a different path. Sarah Jane
asked Legolas why they were changing direction.
She told him that the dwarves had been delighted to tell them the story
of the famous escape from Thranduil’s palace and had been more than happy to
help them sneak in to the palace that way.
“Dwarves.” Legolas
rolled his eyes. “Naturally it would
never occur to them that we would discover how they escaped and had remedied
that situation.” He smiled back at
them. “You could not have gotten into
the palace that way.”
Instead of the palace, Legolas brought them
in to the stables. They followed him in
and heard the horses whinnying and stomping their hooves. Picking up a comb and grooming one of the
horses, he said quietly “I have been looking for you and not hunting for
her. But she needs…” They watched him calm the horse, then,
whispering a plea for its pardon, cut into the horse’s neck. The Doctor and Sarah Jane exchanged glances;
they saw similar wounds on many of the horses.
After Legolas filled the container he carried, he quickly tended to the
horse’s wound and then said “This way.”
Legolas
knew the passages better than most and he led the Doctor and Sarah Jane out of
the stables unseen in through the labyrinth of halls to a small room and told
them to remain there and he would return soon for them.
Finding
his father alone in his throne room, he ran to the throne and told Thranduil that he’d found the Master’s enemies and had them
hidden in the palace. And that he would
need the keys to the treasure rooms. “We
can fight Stoker now.”
Thranduil looked up at his son. “No, Legolas.
That’s not how we’ll do this.”
The
Doctor and Sarah Jane stood in the center of the treasury, turning around and
around, not knowing what to look at first.
Eyes wide, mouths open. “This is
fabulous, absolutely incredible,” said Sarah Jane.
Thranduil smiled in pride.
“It is impressive, isn’t it?”
Something
caught the Doctor’s eye and he strode over to a table and picked up an
object. “The people of Sarah Jane’s
world would be happy to know this has been found.”
She
looked over at that but couldn’t see what the Doctor was holding.
“Never mind that now, Doctor.” The Elvenking
reached over and took the object from the Doctor. “That is not what you are looking for, is
it? Find that bomb.”
It
didn’t take the Doctor long to find what he sought and only a bit longer to
disable the Master’s bomb. “Fortunately
he didn’t feel the need to change the design, I suppose because it’s simple and
it’s worked for him before.”
“Give
it to me” ordered Thranduil and the Doctor handed it
over to him. Thranduil
turned it over in his hands and sighed.
It was one of the more beautiful objects that Stoker had given him. He looked up at the Doctor. “Now come with me.”
After
Legolas had told his father where the Doctor and Sarah Jane were hidden, Thranduil told him he would find them and do what was
necessary. He knew that Stoker was away from
the palace and urged Legolas to rescue his lady, reminding him she was in grave
danger. He instructed Legolas to take
her to his chambers, keep her well-hidden and away from danger that might
follow upon their challenge to the Master.
“She’ll need your protection.”
Legolas
had not needed to be told twice and thanked his father. He rushed to the Master’s chambers. Thanking the Valar that the Master was not
there, he went to her and said “Orenin, I am here.” He carefully sat on the bed.
“Legolas”
she smiled with half-closed eyes when she felt him kiss her forehead.
“I
found the Doctor. All will be well. I must get you out of here.” As carefully as he could, he pulled the tubes
from her, apologizing over and over at her winces and cries. He took her into his arms and carried her
toward the door.
The
Master opened the door and stepped into the room, raising his eyebrows at the
sight of Legolas and the Countess. “What
is this, Prince Legolas? How touching. How useless.
Do you care nothing for your people?” and then turned around, a shocked
look on his face.
Thranduil entered the room, followed by four guards and the
Doctor and Sarah Jane. The king told
Legolas “Hurry, go.” Legolas, carrying
the Countess, left the room.
“Your
device has been disabled,” said the Doctor.
“It’s over. We’ll be going back
to Gallifrey.”
The
Master had reached for the weapon at his belt but Thranduil
raised his hand. “That won’t be
necessary, Stoker.” He turned to the
guards. “Take the Doctor and Sarah Jane
to the dungeons.”
“We
helped you!” cried Sarah Jane.
“And
I thank you for your help,” said Thranduil. Then, placing his arm around the Master’s
shoulders, he said with his most winning smile, looking down at Stoker’s
surprised face, “Now, Stoker, let’s talk.”
