1. Legolas
Legolas
waited. He listened for the friends who
had promised to meet him in the forest and bring him word of what was happening
in his father’s Court, what was happening to his father, King Thranduil. And what was happening with Stoker.
Stoker
had been found in the Mirkwood forest some time before and brought to the
king. Claiming he was escaping unjust
persecution, he’d asked King Thranduil for asylum. In exchange, he had given Thranduil many
gifts, quickly ingratiated himself with the king. They spent much time together talking; Stoker
had learned much from Thranduil about Mirkwood, Middle Earth, and its history and Thranduil gained much in treasure and in knowledge that
Stoker gave him.
Stoker
would disappear for days reappearing with more gifts for Thranduil and
information, invariably accurate, about orc locations
and their potential attack plans. He
also promised help to the king in fighting the orcs
and other evil creatures infesting the forest
of Mirkwood. On one occasion, he had gone out with
Thranduil into the forest to show him how he could fight these enemies. Upon their return, Thranduil had shown
himself completely won over and told all he had come to trust Stoker and gave
him freedom and authority unheard of in the kingdom.
Legolas
hadn’t trusted Stoker from the beginning and had watched Stoker’s growing
influence over his father with dismay. Thranduil had told him of Stoker’s story; Legolas believed
none of it and was embarrassed for his father that he believed Stoker and that
Stoker’s flattery and bribery had won him so much influence with the king. Legolas had been alarmed at the trust
Thranduil had placed in Stoker and had put off Stoker’s attempts at winning his
own friendship and trust.
Legolas
had talked many times with his father of his concerns about Stoker but
Thranduil told Legolas he was impressed by Stoker; Stoker had ‘shown him
miracles’ and he trusted his good intentions.
The last time Legolas had tried to persuade his father not to trust this
stranger so quickly, discussion had deteriorated into argument. Never one to take kindly to any criticism,
even from his son, Thranduil had been angered by what he saw as Legolas’s
challenge to his judgment. Thranduil insisted he knew what he was doing and that it
was for the best. In their last such
conversation, Thranduil told Legolas
that at least Stoker showed an interest in helping him with the business of
defending the kingdom and angry and frustrated, Legolas had just left the
palace for the forest.
Stoker
had asked King Thranduil only for asylum but Legolas had learned that Stoker
had approached the men in the nearby towns, giving a description of his
pursuers and offering a reward for first word of information on their arrival
in Mirkwood; he promised a larger reward if these pursuers could be brought to
him. Legolas wanted to find these
enemies of Stoker first. If Stoker
feared them enough to want them hunted and found, Legolas believed they might
be useful in fighting Stoker’s influence over his father.
Legolas
waited in the forest alone, preferring it that way, seldom lonely. He had grown up, maturing with grace and
beauty, noticeable even in that fair race.
He had taken lovers in his past but he would leave them or be left by
them; it seemed all one to him in the end.
His last affair had ended very badly almost two centuries before;
Legolas had given up then and kept his desires to himself now.
King
Thranduil had watched his beautiful son grow up, hoping for him to find
happiness in finding a wife, in having children, and in learning to rule the
kingdom that would be his one day. But
Legolas had never shown interest in learning anything about running the
kingdom, telling Thranduil he wished for his father to remain king and that he was
content to protect the forest as a guard on patrol. As for finding a mate and giving Thranduil
grandchildren, Legolas had disappointed him there too.
Thranduil, watching his son take and discard
lovers, none touching his heart, went
from amused indulgence to exasperation to something close to despair. Thranduil knew what
was written about the strange fates of unattached elves and tried to persuade
Legolas to take a wife. He would lecture
Legolas about the importance to an elf of joining with a life partner, but it
was all to no avail. It was old argument
between them now.
Thranduil
had tried direct interference in this matter only once but it had not turned
out as he had wished. Some 20 years
before, Thranduil had invited Arwen, daughter of Lord Elrond of Rivendell, to
Mirkwood, hoping she would be the one to fill Legolas’s heart. Thranduil had been heartened by her visit as Arwen and Legolas had indeed
spent much time together, talking and becoming friends. But it had not gone the way Thranduil had
anticipated. When Thranduil
quizzed Legolas about their talks, he learned that Arwen had, in fact, only confirmed for Legolas what he had
decided for himself.
Arwen had told Legolas of finding her heart – “I knew when
I saw him, he was mine as I was his.”
The joy she described in finding her Ranger was exactly what Legolas had
hoped to find for himself one day. The
day she left Mirkwood she told him “You will find your heart Legolas. I am sure of it. Do not lose hope.” She saw that he was close to despair and felt
sorry for him. She realized it was easy
for her to say do not lose hope; she had found her heart and would wait, could
wait forever, if necessary, for the Ranger to be hers. She hoped Legolas would somehow find that
same joy.
Legolas
had decided not to try to rule his heart but would wait and trust the
Valar. They had made him the way he was
and they would send him the one who would fill his heart. Legolas knew his father worried for him; he
knew he was the subject of pity from those who knew him and gossip from those who did not in Mirkwood. But all he could do was wait
and have faith. Legolas waited.
