Chapter 1:
More than Friends
Tauriel was all ready to go. She was wearing her finest patrol outfit, one that was only really kept for special occasions, such as processions for the King that her Guard had to be involved in, but it was her strongest, and unknown to her - actually her most flattering. But being attractive didn't matter where she was going. Actually, the she-elf didn't even know exactly where she was, indeed, going, but it was going to be somewhere amazing, and the consequences that came with leaving the king’s halls, she would just have to face when and if she returned, for her journey would undoubtedly be dangerous. She slung her bow and arrows over her shoulder, along with a small pack of food.
She walked through the palace, trying to act normally and hide her excitement, but when she reached the grand doors that would lead her out through Mirkwood and into the ‘great unknown’, as it were, Tauriel found herself turning around, someone had noticed her, “I do not like being sneaked up on,” she said slowly, slightly annoyed.
Swift footsteps from across the walk way and the esscense of the woods that lay in front of him, a sharp tongue of a scolding nature presented her with the truth. “I would not have to if I knew where you were headed.” He noticed the many arrows in her quiver and her bow which made him assume she would be gone for a long time. “Tauriel, the king would not favor this kind of behavior. Do not betray his trust.”
She turned round, and her spirits fell when Tauriel saw that it was Legolas that had approached her. How could she tell her closet friend, someone she trusted more than anyone, that she was to leave and return indefinitely. Her gaze once more fell upon the woods, and thoughts crossed her mind whether or not to simply venture out and ignore his protests, but the she-elf knew that would be the wrong decision to make. She turned back to face him, a slight frown residing on her forehead, “Come with me, mellon. There is no saying how long we might be gone for but we shall return,” she paused for a second, before continuing slowly, “In time.”
To go with her would be what his heart wanted to ensure her safety and other various personal reasons, but on the other hand his mind was telling him that leaving the grounds without the king’s permission was the wrong time to do. For over a thousand years, the elf prince had trust and was faithful to his father. Only a few times he questioned him only to receive a look of scorn and disappointment. Could he do dare risk upsetting him again? He needed to find out more answers first before he could make his decision. “And where would we be headed? And why must the king not know of this?” He questioned her with a confused look.
Don’t get her wrong, Tauriel knew of the risks that leaving without permission of the Elvenking, and they had plagued her mind constantly in the weeks leading up to her proposed departure, but the need for adventure had been to great, and she was not prepared to give up on her endeavors because Legolas was hesitant for her to leave. In fact she wanted more than anything for him to come with her, although she couldn't quite pinpoint why, “The King must not know because he would not allow it,” she sighed, knowing that her argument wasn't a strong one, “I do not know where we would go, but is that not part of the adventure?” Her face showed a frown, but there was a certain excitement that lit up in her eyes.
Legolas was still hesitant by the answers she had given. How could he leave his people behind and without informing his father? He was a prince, the heir to the throne and Tauriel was Captain of the Guard. Both titles held great worth and the king had placed his trust in both his son and the one he thought of like a daughter “How could we think to betray him like this? After all my father has done for the both of us? He has kept us safe, given you a high position in the guard and you want to insult his honor by leaving without his consent? Tauriel what is wrong? You were never like this before.”
Barely managing to control herself, Tauriel swallowed hard and replied sharply, “There is nothing wrong, Legolas,” she took a deep breath to suppress her anger. She felt resentful towards him, but she knew it was only out of the fact that what he said was true. Could she really just abandon the King, completely destroy Legolas and Thranduil’s trust of her? Reluctantly, Tauriel made the decision not to leave - for now at least; she sighed, and gave Legolas a sarcastic half-smile, “You are right,” she was deliberately blunt, and marched straight past him, not making eye contact or showing any further signs of communication. Before she got very far however, Tauriel stopped and turned around to face him once more, dipping her head respectfully, “I apologize for my behaviour,” but something about her tone was not quite sincere.
Legolas caught notice of her body language towards him and he felt he made the right decision, but she was still upset by what he told was the honest truth. “If you wish to speak to me of this matter in private we can. but do not be angry with me for doing what I know is right. You may not care for being present in our home, but I have more to lose than you? Did you even think to consider that?” Legolas was stern with her and more at himself that he wished he could go with her and maybe he would if he knew how long they would be gone. He could simply say to his king that Tauriel and him were out on patrol and no one would be the wiser, but with no time frame and no reason, her leaving and with him would send out a red flag and question their allegiance to Thranduil.
Tauriel felt the anger rise up inside her, “Of course I considered that!” she had raised her voice against him, which was something, no matter how close they were as friends, a Silvan elf should never do to her Prince. Sharply she turned away, still frustrated and with no way of explaining her thoughts or feelings. As of late, their arguments had been growing more frequent, and they no longer disagreed over simple matters like they had done when they were elflings. It troubled Tauriel, as she felt her friendship with Legolas slipping, and for some reason unknown to the she-elf, it upset her more than perhaps it should have done. Not wanting to cause anymore conflict, she slowly turned around and met his gaze, “There is nothing more I wish to say to you, Legolas,” she gave a small nod and started to head back to her chambers.
Legolas watched her about to leave unsure of what he was going to say. He didn't want to betray his father's trust and at the same time lose a dear friend. What a choice,he had to make but it was best to let her calm down. "Tauriel if you wish to speak of this matter, I will be in my chambers." His shoulder brushed against hers not in a rude way as he walked down the dirt path through the palace that would take him to his chambers. Once he passed his father's area, he came upon his room and subconsciously left his door open as he headed down the steps into the living area
Tauriel nodded before swiftly turning away and heading back to her chambers. There she tried to control her frustration as she changed from her smart uniform into a casual dress, admittedly not one she wore often, but she needed to be rid of all thoughts about patrols and the forest. She took a deep breath and went to sit on the bed closing her eyes for a moment to think. It was all her fault - she had caused the argument with Legolas, she had been so selfish with her foolish endeavors. How could she leave the forest and abandon her people? More importantly, how could she have thought it would be a good idea to being Legolas with her, and why did she want him to come with her so much? All the thoughts running through her was were making Tauriel more and more tense. Her eyes opened, and she suddenly stood. She would go and speak to him. Slowly she opened the door and made her way to Legolas’ chambers.
Inside his chambers, the prince was going through a chest full of letters, but he was not wearing what he normally did. Instead he wore nothing, but a silver robe and leggings as he was about to take a warm much deserved bath. He placed his hand into the water to test the right temperature. Not to cold or not to hot. Removing the robe from his shoulders, it fell into a graceful heap upon the floor. His ivory skin was well defined with his broad shoulders showing his fully exposed, lean muscular physique. His body would rival the beauty of a god’s for it was perfect with not a single mark or scar just as most of his people had, but the prince handled himself with grace and was very disciplined to reduce such events. When he turned to close the chest, he thought he heard footsteps from another outside the hallway.
Tauriel stood outside his door for a moment, deciding whether of not to go in. She desperately wanted to talk to him, yet she was slightly nervous. It was unlike the she-elf to be like this, but she needed to apologize - properly - for her behavior earlier. He had said that if she wished to talk she should come here… Softly she raised her hand and knocked gently at the door, “Legolas? May I speak with you?” Tauriel was aware the the prince may be busy, or simply not want to engage her in conversation after their earlier disagreement. She subconsciously fiddled with the end of her dress, and waited for an answer.
Legolas turned his head to the door and sighed knowing his bath would have to wait or would it? No he should not be thinking of ideas like that. It was indecent and who knows how she felt about him in that way? How could he push that subject onto her? It would place Tauriel on the spot and could ruin their friendship. He quickly wrapped his silver robe over himself and called for her to enter. “Yes come in.” He pushed his blonde hair back over his ears as he had prepared to undo his tight braids so that they would be washed like the rest of him.
She softly opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind her. Although she did not visit often, Tauriel always found splendor in Legolas’ chambers, they were so beautiful, and much unlike her own. She met his gaze and looked him quickly up and down, it was unusual for him to be dressed like he was - but then again the Captain was not exactly in her normal clothing. She glanced over to where the bath was filled with water, “Oh- mellon, if I am interrupting something I shall leave,” she spoke out of courtesy, but something about the situation was drawing her in. Not that it should be, what was she thinking? There were just friends, weren't they?
